At my last check-up, my OB-GYN removed and sent a polyp to the RMC Lab for a tissue test. Even though the original test showed the polyp was benign, Dr. Sanders ordered a second, different type of test performed. My doctor was not contacted about the extra test. There was no reason for it. When I got my bill from RMC, I was charged for both tests. I also got a bill from UAB for the reading of both tests. When I called Dr. Sanders and asked why he performed an unordered test, he said he was just being cautious. I've had the same type of polyp removed before by the same doctor, but tested elsewhere. My doctor assured me before sending the test off, both times, that this type of polyp is very rarely cancerous but she sends it off just to be sure. My doctor was quite surprised when she found out the pathologist ordered a second test.
