List of Mark Backus's Reviews
Dr. Backus is an excellent and caring physician. My husband and I have been his patients for several years. He’s an excellent listener, does extensive bloodwork as well as diagnostic tests, and is quick to refer us out to specialists if needed. We highly recommend Dr Mark Backus and are grateful to be in his care. In addition, the staff in his office are always friendly, respectful, and professional. Great service!
Very Good. He takes the time to explain any concerns. I have gone to him for over 20 years and am very satisfied.
I spent 45 years working in the health care field. I know good docs when I see them as well as bad docs. Dr Backus is one of the best. If you are looking for top notch internal medicine care in a friendly small office setting, this practice is for you.
Trusting this doctor with my health was the worst mistake I've ever made in my life. In January 2017, I had out of control inflammation that started in my right foot and spread up my right leg and then over to my left leg. Dr. Backus said a lot of people get inflammation and it's not necessarily something to be too worried about. He kept prescribing more and more gabapetin to the point where I was becoming like a zombie. I asked him on multiple occasions if I should see a rheumatologist and he said "no." Once he said, "you're a tough case but I'm going to figure it out." Four months into my problem, i became convinced that he wasn't going to solve my problem so I went to a rheumatologist who IMMEDIATELY knew that I needed a skin biopsy, which ultimately showed that I have a rare skin disease. If it had been caught earlier, the damage could have been limited to my right foot or right leg. Instead, it spread to other parts of my body. It's an awful condition that I'll be dealing with my whole life. I wished that I had gone to see a rheumatlologist sooner and I still don't know why he didn't refer me to one. (He only provided the referral after I insisted.) Perhaps he just wanted to keep all the billing at his office?
Excellent care past 15 years
I just adore Dr. Backus. He partners with you, listens to you and has a very approachable bedside manner. He has been my primary care provider for about 10 years now and I have always been happy with the care he has provided.
Dr. Backus was my first doctor since retiring to Bend in 2001. The fact that he received a Masters Degree with honors from Stanford University and a Medical Degree with honors from Duke University led me to his practice. What kept me was his warm and friendly attitude and his willingness to LISTEN TO ME, rather than jumping to conclusions based on his knowledge. He always spends enough time to ensure you go away feeling confident in mutual decisions.

You might get double-charged. I went in for a standard annual physical exam but got billed for a regular office visit in addition to the annual exam. There was nothing unusual or extended about the appointment. I called to say there appears to be an error in my bill...... and I was told repeatedly by the woman who does the billing that it is "legal" to charge that way. She was rude. I later spoke with the doctor and he too said it was "legal". It turns out he too was extremely rude- as well as totally arrogant- about the whole thing. He doesn't really care about his patients.
He only wants to deal with simple wellness issues. He'll readily pass you along to a specialist rather than answer specific questions. He also double charge you if he thinks you are taking up too much of his time.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
