Hoag Hospital Irvine's Online Review Report Card

I'm  am only giving a star just to be able to explain my time at the hell hole . Worst experience of my life ... wasn't treated like a human being . I was brought back to a room tested for covid and left in the room to never see a nurse again to ask why I was there or if I was in pain or anything ! No one came in the room the entire 6 hours I was there besides the x-Ray tech to transport me to X-ray .. The only reason I knew my covid test was negative is because I have the app and it lets me know when results come back . Finally the kicker was the ER Physician gave my diagnosis to a patient next door .. because I paged a nurse to ask if anyone was ever going to acknowledge me or why I was there .. the nurse says to me rudely you already talked to the dr a minute ago .. I said unless I'm hallucinating I did not .. not one nurse or doctor has been in this room the entire length of my visit .. then the nurse says yea the doctor talked to your husband and I said what no I came here alone and my husband passed away in 2018. .. Finally the ER Physician realized his HIPPA violation didn't apologize and treated me like shit for his mistake .. no one ever asked me if I was in pain which was the main reason I was there next to the fact that I have had bronchitis for almost two weeks now and it has gotten worse .... He just told me what I already know about this diagnosis with out myself going to medical school and left acting like it was so crazy busy in there ... there was maybe three patients .. my advice for Hoag don't tell your urgent care centers to recommend patients go to the ER if symptoms worsen or persist .. and my advice for you if you are considering this ER , don't the staff are all extremely rude and they don't even acknowledge you they would have left me in there all day and misdiagnosed the patient next door to me had I not said anything ... AWFUL they do not care to treat any kind of pain or discomfort and jn my experience the entire department lacks the empathy required to work in the medical field. If you want to feel better and actually get cared for DO NOT GO to this ER !!!!!

This review is only about the Hoag Irvine, E.R.  This is not about Hoag Newport Beach E.R.  Let me start by saying that my family and I have visited Hoag Newport Beach E.R. and been hospitalized at Newport several times over the years.  Hoag Newport Beach E.R. is outstanding.  However, it was necessary for me to visit the Irvine E.R. on a Friday afternoon.  I had fallen on a concrete sidewalk and hit my head, face and knocked out several teeth.  My husband took me to Irvine.  BIG MISTAKE.  Customer service is horrible from the get go.  Did their triage and put me back in waiting room.  Finally, had an xray of my wrist.  I asked the tech. what about my head and he said nothing was ordered.  When I told him I had hit my head, he said I needed a C.T. but he could not order it, that he would "try" to find a doctor to order it.  After another 45 mins. someone came from C.T. to take me for the scan.  Then, back to the waiting room.  My face was bleeding from cuts, no clean up, no ice bag offered.  After another 1 plus hrs. someone from insurance came to ask me if my insurance was the same.  Yes, and I have been in the Hoag system for several years.  When I asked her when I would see a doctor, she said, "soon."  Finally, after 2.5 hrs. waiting, a nurse came up to me and asked me if I was waiting for something.  I about lost it at that point.  I'm 76 years old, hit my head hard on concrete, bleeding, lost 6 teeth.  He then offered me an ice bag.  He then said he would check for a bed.  Then, he returned and took me to a side room with a chair only and told me to wait.  Another 30 plus minutes a male enters and asks me the problem.  I checked his name tag, Physician Assistant.  I asked him when I will see a doctor and he informed me that he was taking care of me.  I asked him about the C.T. and he said it was fine, over and out.  He ordered an antibiotic told me to see my dentist and said I was discharged. I was never cleaned up.  As I was leaving this room, a nurse came in and said a bed was ready.  I told her I was discharged and she said she did not have any paper work.  She then returned a few minutes later and told me I could leave.  I never did see a doctor for a head injury.  This place should be closed for the E.R.  Stay away.  Very disorganized and the customer service is a disgrace to the Hoag name.

If possible, I would give a negative rating to this hospital. It is not a hospital, it is a 5 star hotel that charges you exorbitantly for even holding your hand. My 11 yr old kid had bad stomach ache and had vomited multiple times before I took him to the ER at Hoag. The doctor checked him and said there is nothing wrong and made rude comments about us right outside the room. 3 hours spent and we did ultrasound and CT Scan (no other medication given or prescribed) to make sure everything was alright. Came home and 10 days later I receive my first bill of $8,420 and then another bill for discharge of my kid of $813 and then another one for examination charges of $506. The CT Scan was charged at $5140 and Emergency Room was charged at $1797. I thought hospitals and doctors are for care of patients in need. This place is just a rip off trying to recover the cost of building their beautiful facility in Irvine. Please avoid at any cost. Worst service, will cost you a fortune. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

What the heck has gotten into Hoag?  I am trying to make an imaging appointment and in order to "verify my identity" they are asking for almost everything except the birthweight of my first child.  It used to be that it was enough to ask name and birth date.  Are they having so many problems with identity falsification that it takes over 5 minutes just to verify who I am?  Hoag is getting worse and worse.

This facility is nice and everything you want, but prepare yourself for been ripped off when the billing arrives. I had a knee surgery quoted for $26.000. After it was done, the surgeon, the anesthesiologist were pretty straight forward in their bills and matched the anticipated expenses. However, Hoag suddenly hits me with a $50.000 bill saying that there were other things the surgeon had to do. I spoke with the surgeon and he was very clear in saying that surgery went as expected and No additional procedures were conducted. Hoag submitted the bill to my insurance and got a partial payment on a non existent procedure. Hoag cost for a knee arthroscopic surgery $50.000.I was in the hospital in surgery 45 minutes and 1 hour in recovery. They refuse to send bill or operation reports. Truly sad that such a great facility is a ripoff machine.Update:After talking to customer relations, the surgeon himself telling them that he did not conduct any other procedure other than planned, and endless explanations why a 29881 cannot be billed separately from a 29876 if the procedure was on the same knee. ( plenty of precedent online) HOAG accounting and billing did what they do. They took advantage and they are not even open to understand the situation. GIMME THE MONEY is their moto, even for something you did not ask for. Sad to see that they have to literally rip off people and take advantage of them while their are at the most vulnerable physical moment. I will go above and beyond sharing this story with the hope other avoid this scam factory.

I was just there, I just returned home after being there for about 7 hours. The care that I received there was top-notch. The Doctors, Nurses, and all remaining staff took very good care of this grumpy old lady (just kidding). I was in a lot of pain and they were all very attentive to my needs. I received very prompt service. They made me feel very comfortable while I was there. I would highly recommend going there.

What a scam of a medical provider. I went in to have a mole checked out  and the doctor spent 5 minutes with me to measure it - and spent most of  the time looking for a ruler. She measures it, then apparently spent  25-40 minutes typing in the measurement to my file (because I was  charged for a 30-45 minute visit, which is complete bullshit. I ended up  being charged $303 for someone with a medical license to measure my  mole with a ruler. I call to have them review the charge and they just  tell me to talk to insurance, even though they know full well insurance  is a reactive process based on how the provider codes it. Insurance will  just tell me to go right back to the provider to contest how it's being  coded, but the provider doesn't give a crap anyway. Yeah, they really  care about patients, don't they? Ronny Chieng has a bit about how Asian  parents want their kids to be doctors to make a lot of money, but then  will refuse to see a doctor because all the doctor cares about is making  money (and could really care less about the patient). It's true. Stay  away from here and find yourself a provider that actually cares.
