Mary Dyes, Md's Online Review Report Card

I have never left a bad review, but I feel that sharing my experience can hopefully prevent other families from experiencing the hell I went through. My daughter had new onset of seizures. We were a patient of Dr. Lake (who we loved) but she retired so we switched to Dr. Dyes. Dr. Dyes was out of town so she had her PA interpret the test results. Any good ethical doctor would not allow a physician assistant to interpret results and diagnose a patient. The PA misinterpreted my daughters results and called me with a "confirmed" diagnosis. The diagnosis was very severe with a poor prognosis. After weeks of sleepless nights, worry, fear, sadness, we reached out to a specialist in Boston about this disorder. After reviewing her results, he informed us that our daughter cannot have this disorder as she's only a carrier of the gene. Dr Dyes nor the PA never had the decency to call and apologize for incorrectly reading the results and misdiagnosing my little girl. I will never forgive this horrendous dr, pa, and office for putting my family through this.

Dr Dyes sees my children and is very attentive, very smart and personable. Rarely do you ever get that amazing combo. Office staff is friendly. One lady in there gets frustrated easily so hopefully any stressed mommies can keep that in mind. A really nice girl and young man who were working were so helpful THANK YOU! They are so good w their patients and families. Office is small if you have a double stroller or large wheelchair. Very clean. Random: bathroom smells so gross. Prob not a permanent odor??? If you get a room right next to it keep your door shut. lol

Don't waste your time on trying to book with this doctor. The appointment person never picks up or returns calls. After a 4th attempt, I pressed "0" and was first told they do not see adults. And when I told them that my 50-year old friend referred me to this doctor, they said that they are no longer taking on new adult patients. It would have been nice if the person who supposedly takes appointments said that in her outgoing message!

Doctor Dyes has been my son's neurologist for 27 years. In that time she has been attentive, innovative and most of all kind. Early on there were some rough patches getting his seizures under control. Doctor Dyes and her office have always been timely in their responses to this stressed mom. I appreciate her always being there when I needed her. When my son started having behavior issues during puberty she was there to put a game plan in place to ease his mood swings. Thank you Doctor Dyes for being a great part of our sons medical team.

Is a good maintenance neurologist. Stopped serving adults. Problems with high turnover of receptionist. Office manager slow on return calls when I was there. Now, Children only.

I don't know how the Dr. is but I accidentally called when I was wanting to call a Mary Kay dealer and her receptionist was exceptionally rude to me. It was the way she spoke to me that made me feel upset. When I responded in the same way, the receptionist got mad at me but did not consider how it made people feel to be treated the way she was treating people. I usually don't have people treat me so rudely. I didn't know why she was doing it.

My baby boy was born at 24 weeks with two grade 3 brain bleeds and hydrocephalus. He spent 143 days in the NICU and was finally released on 3-28-18. My doctor in the NICU was Dr Jean Lake and now I'm forced to get a new doctor outpatient because she doesn't take Medi-cal or CCS. She referred me to Mary Kay Dyes which has been a nightmare and I haven't even met the lady yet. I guess that's the real issue because it seems she doesn't give a rats ass about my infant child. There's something wrong with him and she won't see him or take the time to visit him in the hospital. Let me explain: 4-26-18 was our 1st appt. Missed due to being in hospital for a week. Never came to visit in hospital. Called to reschedule appointment and they said they needed to talk with doctor. After several phone calls to them, the next available appointment was in September. I informed them they needed to do better and of course they needed to talk with Mary Kay Dyes.  Finally after several more phone calls I received an appointment for July 12th 2018. 7-12-18- My son again was Hospitalized for a week. I stressed to everyone at the hospital I was concerned about missing my Neurologist appointment with Mary Kay Dyes. She sent her PA for a 5 min. Visit.  The hospital discharge papers said a 2 week follow up and again the office girls had to talk with Mary Kay Dyes. After several more phone calls the soonest appointment is September 13th, 2018. This is a far cry from the 2 week follow up appointment from the hospital and from the NICU. My son is clearly having neurological issues and early intervention is important.  You would think she would want to see him after being hospitalized twice, born preterm at 24 weeks with two brain bleeds, hydrocephalus, seizures,  and distributing neurological issues. She should see him at least one visit to make sure it's nothing serious. It's not our fault he was in the hospital for each scheduled appointment and she couldn't take the time to visit. What if something happens to him.  I had to get his seizure medicine dosage adjusted at one of the hospital stays because she isn't following him at all. I'm pissed beyond belief and feel she is incompetent. All the other specialist's involved with his case says he needs to be followed with Neurologist and can't understand why she's not following him.    Can any Neurologist help my preterm baby out. He's such a fighter and deserves a doctor who cares.

Incompetent, unresponsive, uncaring. Misdiagnosed my child, never returned phone calls. Poor assessment skills and knowledge. Zero communication skills, zero care for patients and parents.

This review mostly pertains to Dr. Dyes's care for a seizure disorder over a long time (15 years now). We've had other neurologists, but we've found Dr. Dyes's office to be cooperative and responsive, and Dr. Dyes herself to be personable and sensible. We've never had trouble making appointments or getting prescriptions taken care of. We've appreciated the continuity of care which is so vital for chronic conditions like seizures--it really helps if someone has known a patient for a long time and can see big-picture patterns and trends. The office in Long Beach is nice and accessible, though remember to bring cash for parking (even with a placard).

I would absolutely never recommend this doctor or anyone in her office to anyone. We have been seeing dr dyes for over a year and I can honestly say she knows nothing about my son. From the beginning she would look at him and say he definitely doesn't have autism so just come back in 3 months. This went on for an entire year. Until I as his mother pushed for further testing. This is where the real issues began. I spoke with dr. dyes nurse, Ginger whom tried to convince me that the testing was too expensive to do. Too expensive and not necessary and that our insurance would not cover. Basically she gave me every excuse in the book to not do it (without even consulting the dr). I flat out told her I don't care how much it would cost that we wanted it to happen. She promised to call after speaking with the doctor and never did. This became a habit. Promises to call back and never getting a call back. unfortunately for them I am a persistent son of a gun and would call back and get answers. Needless to say the labs were approved and ordered but the doctor (one of which i requested the other I had no idea was being done and found out through the insurance company because the doctor NEVER called me). Then BJ (not sure of her title) told me that insurance had to approve the labs. I called our insurance company and they assured me they did not need to be approved. However BJ and whomever else was in charge of this in their office made me wait 3 weeks. Regardless of my endless emails and phone calls telling them that we didn't need approval. 3 weeks later they FINALLY agreed that no approval was necessary. Labs were taken and then more time was spent waiting. I could go on and on about the conversations we had. One in which the nurse, Ginger had no idea what one of the test results told us other then that he was a maleâ?¦um seriously. I think we figured that one out without the test. I asked her a number of questions and she repeatedly said "I don't know" and actually told me to "google it!" Absolutely absurd. Finally our important test results were in and the same fabulous nurse let it slip that they were in however that they couldn't tell us that they said because the doctor was not in. That we would have to wait until next week. Uncalled for. And you better believe that I did not stand for it. I suggested that if the doctor is too busy or simply didn't care about my son to fax results my pediatrician. Which is what they ended up doing (after hours). Trying to make it difficult for me to get the results. My husband and I still met with the neurologist after receiving the results from our pediatrician hoping that she could give us more insight in his diagnosis. We got absolutely nothing out of the meeting. Frankly after researching his diagnosis for 3 days we knew much more on the subject then she did or then she cared to know. Dealing with this office has been stressful, exhausting and in no way helpful. My only hope is that vocalizing our experience will keep future patients from going through the same thing.
