I had a really good experience with Dr. Russell Petrie. I tore my ACL, LCL, MCL and possibly my meniscus in a workout class about one year ago. I say "possibly" because my MRI was taken at an urgent care facility and the magnet was low quality but he never made me feel like I had to order a new one. He thoroughly examined me and suggested that I try six weeks of physical therapy and come back. I did as instructed and while I felt some relief, it was clear I needed surgery. He assured me I didn't have to do the surgery immediately as I'd just started a new job and was waiting for insurance to kick in and didn't have any PTO. He did warn me against "waiting 15 years like his last patient".

Skip to a year later (Covid 19 had plans for my original surgery date) and I was able to have the surgery. He and Kerrie (Dr. Petrie's PA) reexamined me and explained that that my MCL and LCL healed on their own after months of physical therapy due to the location of those injuries. The therapy also set me up for a faster healing process for an ACL surgery. They thoroughly explained what my options were as there are different techniques for repairing the ACL and provided the pros and cons of each method. They never made me feel like this surgery was out of my control and that I had all the tools to make my own informed decision. I'm really happy with the results and many of my friends and neighbors who went through a similar experience are marveling at how quickly I'm recovering. I would recommend Dr. Petrie or Newport Orthopedic to anyone.
I just celebrated the 1 year anniversary of the surgery Dr. Petrie performed on my shoulder. I am an avid triathlete and a year ago I was struggling to swim effectively and worse, the quality of my sleep due to chronic shoulder pain had become intolerable. Physical therapy was not helping. I'm so grateful that my primary care physician referred me to Dr. Petrie. I found every aspect of the care I received to be superb. Both Dr. Petrie and his excellent PA, Karri, are attentive, personable, vastly knowledgeable, patient and caring. I very much appreciated that they tried multiple nonsurgical procedures first, but ultimately I did have a rather significant surgery to relocate a tendon in my shoulder, among other soft tissue cleanup efforts and an acromial decompression (shaving of the bone). This was a huge deal! I also found the attention I received after my surgery to be excellent, with multiple phone calls and daily online checkins. I truly felt so well cared for.

My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner!!

A year later I can honestly say I have made a fabulous recovery, to which I credit Dr. Petrie's surgical skills, and excellent postop physical therapy. To put this in perspective, 128 days after my surgery, I completed Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, which includes a 1.2 mile swim. (It wasn't pretty, but I was amazed I could do it!) At 8.5 months postop, I completed Ironman Kalmar, Sweden with a person best time, overall, and specifically in the 2.4 mile swim (nearly 2 minutes faster) WITH ZERO PAIN! And the best news is, my quality of life is much improved by being able to sleep soundly again without shoulder pain.

I cannot speak highly enough of the excellent care I received and outstanding results I achieved.
Fabulous background of knowledge enables Dr. PETRIE to provide a surgical experience superior to any basic ortho doc. He repaired my shreded shoulder. I can now look forward to a fresh new active life without having to always baby my arm. I can't thank him enough.
Very disappointed with their staff! I was 10 minutes late to my appointment, due to traffic and they let me sit in the waiting room
for at least 10 minutes before they called me up to the desk to tell me they will have to reschedule my appointment because I was late.
Unbelievable! I have waited before at this office to see the doctor, but they don't care about that. I'll be looking for another orthopedic doctor.
Dr. Petrie and Karri are by the best orthopedic team in Orange County. They reviewed my MRI in great detail and firmly disagreed with the radiologist who determined I had a full thickness rotator cuff tear. I was overridden with anxiety, and they were able to keep me calm and assure me I wouldn't need surgery. They are incredibly knowledgeable and detail oriented. If you are in need of a shoulder surgeon, look no further. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. THANK YOU!
I had two knee surgeries this year both performed by Dr. Petrie. I tore my ACL doing a pretty cool jump at a diamond run called the Wall in 1992 at Big Bear. The spread eagle was nice but when I tried to double it and do a twist to finish it off I hit a bump, landed on my right knee, and heard a pop. I finally got my ACL repaired in grad school and at the time it was a new innovative procedure but 20 years later it felt a little loose. I had a CT scan and it showed damage to my repaired ACL and meniscus.
Unfortunately for me I needed two knee surgeries to repair my previously ACL repaired knee. The appointments were easy to book and the Orthopedic Institute has plenty of parking and is a new facility. There are two floors of the building and it's close to Fashion Island. The first initial appointments were with both Dr. Petrie and his PA Karri. His PA is wonderful she gave me lots of insight as to what to expect from the surgery and the recovery. After she examines you and asks questions then Dr. Petrie sees you. Dr. Petrie has wonderful bedside manner and makes you feel very comfortable that you will receive the best of care. I booked my first surgery to remove my ACL and place the bone graft in to close my tunnels that were left from the first surgery. After the surgery they set up the physical therapy and see you during your recovery phase in weekly and monthly visits. I had to take another CT scan to see how my bone grafts were healing then I had the second surgery in October. I am currently on three times a week physical therapy and everything is going well. The surgery staff for both my surgeries were amazing. I felt like I had the best care. I'm really happy I had my knee surgery done at Newport Orthopedic. I would highly recommend Dr. Russell Petrie for any knee surgery he simply is the best. Happy Yelping.

My mom had an accident & broke her shoulder rather severely. Everyone we spoke to in & out of the medical field recommended Dr.Petrie & now I know first hand, he is the best! He took his time at every appt to explain & answer questions. He even went as far as to make a call to my brother to explain the procedure to him as well. Way above & beyond & so appreciated.
Once we determined surgery was a necessity & time was of the essence, his staff jumped in & handled things quickly & efficiently. Misty, his scheduler, was awesome! Ray C. who also works with Dr. Petrie is equally awesome. We are so grateful to all of them & their team for doing such a superb job. There are not enough words to express how truly impressed I am.
I had some minor issue postop and he didn't seem overly concerned to examine me or offer any solutions other than it would get better. At my 3 month the problem had resolved, but discussion about the issue he was sort of dismissive about it. The PA was more interested/concerned than he was. Based on this seeming lack of concern, I'm pretty sure I'm not going back for other surgeries that I need. I want a good technical surgeon and a good doctor. I think he's a good surgeon, but not sure about the doctor part which includes discussion, engagement and empathy.
I just had shoulder surgery and a pretty major one at that. I have been putting it off and dreading for many months. Today was my one week post op and have been absolutely amazed with the care and communication of Dr. Petrie and all of his staff. First night was ROUGH, but got a call from Dr. And lifted my spirits. Everyday has gotten better and great appointment with positive feedback from Dr. Petrie and Ray. What a great surgeon and care team.
I originally booked an appointment to see this Doctor weeks in advance, he came recommended by someone in my gym. Upon arriving at the Dr.'s office and waiting for some time they informed me that he took the day off and I hadn't been notified. I was extremely frustrated by this, because I had to take work off to go to this appointment.

They then referred me to a Nurse on his staff who looked at my Xrays for about a minute or two and didn't even test my shoulder range of motion. He immediately recommended a full shoulder replacement surgery. I have been working out ever since with minimum pain because I came into contact with a good physical therapist. I really dodged a bullet.

To make matters worse, after I paid for the office visit copay (which I thought was a waste of money) I received another bill for 80$ more dollars. I called and they said they would waive the bill because I wasn't satisfied. Fast forward to a YEAR later I get a call from a collection agency. I have to be pretty upset to write on Yelp, but this has gone way too far. I paid the bill and hopefully will never hear from this medical group again.
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Russell Petrie and the people at Newport Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Petrie is an outstanding doctor who is very knowledgeable, skilled, and caring. I underwent shoulder repair surgery, and not only were the results exceptional, but my recovery was far faster than anticipated thanks to Dr. Petrie's approach to a complicated injury. Dr. Petrie and his staff are professionals who take a genuine interest in the well being of their patients, and I am very fortunate to have had Dr. Petrie as my doctor.
Excellent Doctor I knew he had other patients, but felt like he spent the whole morning with me discussing my injuries, various treatments, odds for recovery, returned three times to ensure I had all of my questions answered and was comfortable with him and my planned surgery. Surgery went very well and he met with me prior and I believe after (a little hazy on that!). I know quite a few Physicians and Orthopedic Surgeons and all told me that for my type of knee injury, he was the very best. Aftercare has been excellent and I'm looking forward to a full recovery!
Dr. Petrie is the best! I don't trust many people, even if they are a doctor, because I think they are always trying to get money any way they know how, but this doctor SAVED me from an invasive procedure on my knee. I can't tell you enough how thankful that I went to him for a second opinion! I was told by another doc that I had a torn meniscus and had to have surgery asap to correct it before it would get any worse. Dr. Petrie informed me that that wasn't the case at all and referred me to a physical therapist who rehabilitated my knee through regular, routine exercises! All it turned out to be was my stance and musculature around my knee needed to be rehabbed. Since then, I have had no pain or discomfort.
No one wants to have surgery, but if you need a shoulder repaired, Dr. Petrie is the man to do it. I broke my shoulder in April and Dr. Petrie performed the surgery with a great outcome. Thanks, Dr. Petrie!
Dr. Petrie is awesome! He operated on my daughter's knee about two years ago and she is thrilled with her new knee! He prepared her for exactly how her recovery would be and he was spot on! He was great to work with and I would recommend him highly!
Love this Doc!!! Super friendly & just plain awesome. I have two toddlers who run a muck and Dr. Petrie was always so sweet, paying lots of attention to them, even making them balloons out of surgical gloves with a smiley. Dr. Petrie repaired both of my shoulders from sports injury. I had my left one done in 2004 & the right one done in 2011, good as new thanks to Dr. Petrie. Recovery was though the first time around & a breeze the second time, I guess my injury was not as bad. Dr. Petrie would even call me at home to make sure all was going well, nice guy, great doc! Thank you for all your hard work Dr. Petire :)
