List of Huntington Family Medicine's Reviews
Ann Asher, NP is great! I have been seeing her for a few years now. HOWEVER, the front desk, ESPECIALLY MARIA or the office manager as blatant RUDE. Maria does not care what your issue is pretty much she is a "IT IS WHAT IT IS" type of person, you don't like it? Go to the ER or wait a couple of days. EVERY SINGLE TIME Maria has always negative to say. If you choose this office, be ready for long waits and lots of rude encounters with the front desk. Once you have passed "the first level" (front desk), the experiences with the doctors/nurses are great. And it's very unfortunate because it's a conviene location.
Warning for possible future patients. Dr Maria Parra, D.O does not want to see you as a patient who is ill. She does not listen to your concerns or take family history into consideration when she treats you. At best she may give you a Telehealth visit but usually refers her patients to urgent care for treatment. It doesn't matter if heart issue, injury or illness, I was referred to urgent care for all 3. The only time she didn't have a problem seeing me was the appointment that I had to make prior to seeing her for the first time to review the questionnaire on my history when I was selecting her as my physician. Even then, I got the feeling that she wasn't interested and really didn't think my concerns were very important. I was uneasy with this meeting but thought I would give her a chance. I am a person who rushes to the doctor and will only go if I can not treat the condition myself. With this doctor you have to advocate for yourself to even get a referral. Unless you want to act as your own doctor or like visiting the urgent care for everything I would suggest finding a different doctor. It seems to be a recurring problem from some of the reviews I have read on this doctor.
The office staff is very unprofessional. Maria had me on hold for 10 minutes and never came back to the call. I called at 4:20 and she hang up the call. I call again and it directed me to the after hours service. This the third time this has happened.
Long overdue review. 2018, saw Dr. Maria Parra, D.O. Had a nasty flu for over 3 weeks, paired with seasonal allergies. Took care of myself with bed rest, OTC meds, air purifier, air humidifier, nasal rinse, vitamins, water, etc. Just wasn't getting better. Started having severe nasal pain, headaches, jaw pain, confusion, chills, and nausea. Went to see Dr. Parra for the 1st time. Explained that I've been doing self care for weeks now, but my symptoms seem to be worsening. This woman was dismissive, impatient, and rude. She did not offer any plan for treatment. Did not consider an infection or order any tests. Simply said it will go away if I continue to do self care. Was in and out, 5 mins tops. I took her professional advice, and blamed myself for being impatient/not taking care of myself enough. 3 days later, I ended up in urgent care, bc my confusion and jaw pain was getting worse. In addition, I lost my sense of taste and smell. Luckily for me, my urgent care doctor was an ENT. He immediately had me do an x-ray. Results showed my nasal cavities were all showing white, which meant there wasn't much empty space, which meant I had a massive nasal infection. I needed antibiotics asap. He told me he didn't understand why Dr. Parra wouldn't put me on antibiotics in the first place, bc the symptoms were clear, and that it didn't have to come to me losing my taste/smell. Thankfully, after only taking the antibiotics for 2 days, I was already starting to feel better. Unfortunately, even after the whole course of antibiotics, my sense of taste and smell didn't come back. I ended up seeing an ENT. ENT said that infection damaged my olfactory receptors, so I was put on steroids for the 1st time, in the hopes my senses would come back. Nope, didn't come back. Instead, I gained 10 lbs and had moon face. Getting off the steroids was also hell, I was lethargic for 2 weeks. Body just isn't the same since the whole ordeal. Point is, Dr. Parra is a horrible doctor. If she acted like a compassionate human being who did what the nature of her job calls for, this would've never happened to me. I do not recommend this doctor. My taste/smell came back about 70%, a year and a half later.
The doctor I see at Huntington is good, and my three stars are for them. However the office and billing is far from acceptable and the reason I'm taking off the two stars. The office staff is rude and unhelpful if you have any questions or concerns. I was recently overcharged for a visit, and the office refused to give me an explanation as to why. They then threatened to put me into collections over the copay for a visit I did not have, and refused to correct their billing to be representive of the services provided. Unfortunately I ended up paying the fraudulent copay along with a "fee" for a letter, which ended up being a two line email sent to me instead of a letter on letterhead to my employer like I expected. I hope it was worth it to them because I will be finding a new doctor after this experience, and will no longer recommend anyone go to this office for medical care.In addition to this, the office refuses to validate parking (in the building's own structure), so be prepared to pay an arm and a leg in parking fees every time you need to see your doctor. They are near Huntington Hospital so free street parking is pretty much impossible since all the curbs are red or have very low time limits that are not conducive to the time frame of seeing a doctor.
Ann Asher, NP, has been critical to my care. She helped coordinate all the diagnostic tests necessary to diagnose and treat my breast cancer. I will forever be grateful for her calm demeanor and her willingness to address my concerns. This is an office of women. They are quick with referrals and there is no sign of an ego in this office. Thank you to the whole team.
The sweet disposition of Dr. Mattai is a hoax! My daughter spent her first six years at this doctors office, and I initially thought that this doctor was so loving and caring, As we discussed vaccines and we gave them to my child, everything seemed fine until after her so DTaP shot. About nine months after that shot, she got a rare bacterial disease called Myositis. Because it was nine months after the vaccine she told me that there couldn't be a link between the two, so I listened. Shoot to 12 years old and my daughter was forced to get her 6th Tdap shot to enter junior high, and she had A very severe reaction. She had 103° fever, sweat through the entire bed, had lockjaw, and couldn't move her arm for two days. Her new doctor that we barely know because we were just switch to her based on medical groups and insurance, gave Our daughter a two week medical exemption until her final shot to stay in school. But what these doctors don't seem to care about is that my daughter looked exactly the same when she was having her adverse reactions to the DTaP shots as she did when she had myositis and had to be rushed to the ER. I have had questions for years that no doctor seems to be able to answer....probably because there's not enough time to read every study), but I found some papers linking DTap & Tdap to Myositis and wanted to have a discussion with the doctor who's care she was under when she went in. That said I finally called Dr. Nalini Mattai's office to just talk to the doctor about her professional opinion about some of the articles I recently found linking Dtap to Myositis several months later, and she wouldn't take my call or call me back. Her office manager gave me some BS excuse that they were no longer taking new patients so she can't talk to us, but when your child has a rare bacterial disease at five years old and that doctor is the only person in close proximity to the details, it feels completely irresponsible and should be illegal, for them to not only not take your call but to also tell you their offices are not taking new patients, so Lela would never be able to talk to her doctor about the rare bacterial disease only Dr. Mattai witnessed. A five or ten minute call discussing My daughter and the articles would help me to understand if doctors are seeing this in other patients, but because they doctors make so much money off vaccine distribution, they all "stand by them" and their profits, even when someone like my daughter keeps having reactions to vaccines and no one will protect her. Do not believe that this doctor is the community caregiver you need! I promise you you deserve better. Keep looking.
Very professional, friendly, timely office. The doctors are excellent and have caring and attentive bedside manner.
They suggested my family member to do a session of tele-medicine with NP (not even the doctor) , which my insurance even provide for free. They are deceiving patients for such non-sense because I know tele-medicine is not covered by many insurances. So we had to pay 125 USD out of the pocket plus they charged an extra 50 bucks for the co-pay. This is a semi or quasi-fraud!!! Why they even took the co-pay in the beginning. Very unethical practice!!!!
I absolutely love Dr. Mattai and have had good experiences with all of the physicians and NP that I've had visits with. But, the office staff is incredibly rude on the phone. They put me on hold without waiting for a confirmation and then hang up on me. By the third time I call I finally get through but they always treat me like I'm inconveniencing them just by trying to schedule and appointment. If I could do it online I would. They could use some phone etiquette training. I have been a patient with Dr. Mattai for over 10 years and I don't see that changing. If it weren't for her, I would've left a long time ago.
