Excellent surgeon, saved my life! I was septic and 50/50 in 2008. He never gave up on me! Thank you!

My mom has a lipoma on her leg. We went to urgent care to see what to do next and they recommend us to Dr. Thomas Vanderlaan. So I made the appointment and that went seamlessly, we showed up he notified us that we need to get a blood test in order to receive an MRI to see what was really going on if my mom needed surgery or not since the growth was growing quickly. We went downstairs and took the blood test right away, they notified me that the blood test results will be ready in 3-5 days so we waited patiently.I week passed by with no phone call from the doctor, I called the office 3 days consecutively, no one picked up. I let about a week pass by again and I called and a nurse picked up saying that the doctor will reach out to us and tell us the results when he can. So we waited and a few days later he called saying that she was ok to get the appointment for the MRI and they should have everything on file about my mom so all we needed to do was call. We were ecstatic! so called the directed MRI place, they didn't have any information, we showed up to the MRI place to make sure, they didn't have any information. We called the office again and no one picked up. when we called about the 3rd time, they said that the MRI place should have all of the information on there and just in case they will send me an email confirmation, I said ok I'll try calling the MRI place again. I never got the email confirmation but thank goodness they had a file ready to put my mom down, we made an appointment and waited for 3 weeks. 2 days before that appointment, they called and said that insurance is still pending and we should reschedule; and thats what we didn't we rescheduled a few weeks later.Out agent called and checked up on my mom asking if she got her MRI and my mom said that we are still waiting, suspiciously she took it upon herself to reach out and look at the case for us. She called us back on the same day notifying us that the reason our insurance didn't go through is because they needed more information on what is needed to be done and they have sent a letter to the office for over a month notifying that they need more information in order for my mom together an MRI. She said the doctors should have reached out to us and notified us about the ordeal but they never did.This was super bad service, i will not be going back here ever again. The appointment went smoothly to see that doctor but when a patient wants to get their results back its like we have to climb through MT. Everest and back. The staff is horrible about calling back or getting notes to the doctor. Seems like they all push off the work to someone else. EVERY PATIENT COUNTS!!!! BIG OR SMALL!

I went to Dr. Vander Laan for a second opinion about an umbilical hernia that I have. The first doctor I went to didn't even take the time to exam me. He lifted my shirt and said, yep you have a hernia let's get you into surgery now. Even though I wanted to get pregnant again and he said he would rupture again and he would have to go back in. I was literally in his office for only 2 minutes and he sent me straight to the lady to make my surgery appointment. I decided I needed a second opinion. I then made an appointment with Dr. Vander Laan and I'm so glad I did! He actually gave me an exam and took the time to explain everything and answered all my questions. Thank you Dr. Vander Laan for taking the time to talk to me!

Dr. Vander Laan was truly amazing. Took the time to explain every step of my surgery he was going to perform. Any questions I had he answered. He has been so patient and gentle with me and my concerns. Post surgery: my incisions are so tiny and clean. Never had any issues with recovering other than the normal healing that is needed. Thank you Dr. Vander Laan!!!!!

Dr. Vander Laan is an excellent physician. I met him in the emergency room at Huntington, scared to death to undergo my first surgery (I have an actual phobia of medical procedures). Dr. Vander Laan was calm, confident, and matter-of-fact, but also very caring and understanding. After the emergency surgery (which took place at about 11:30pm), he returned the following morning to check-in on me, and then the next two days while I was in recovery. After my discharge from the hospital, he continued to see me for the next 6 weeks in his office and continued to be caring and accommodating...and patient with all of my questions! I just had my last follow-up with him, and after giving me a clean bill of health, he encouraged me to call if I have any further concerns moving forward. From this phobic patient, I give the good doctor 5-stars!

I met Dr. Vander Laan for the first time this week in the emergency room at Huntington Hospital! I, being in a world of pain, was probably a jerk. The good doctor, however, was very gracious and decent with me. He seems like a good man and a great doctor. He has been exceptionally patient with me and my multitude of questions. So far (3-days after surgery), I'm doing good and I have nothing but decent things to say about Dr. Vander Laan. Overall, when I meet people like this doctor (and most of the folks in the emergency room) I am humbled by what a good and decent place we all get to live. When I'm at my worst, I still have the option and ability to go to a hospital and be served by people who have dedicated their lives to helping people like me. I owe a great deal of gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Vander Laan and everyone that helped me this week at Huntington Hospital. THANK YOU!!
