Benjamin Johnson's Online Review Report Card

I switched doctors and it was the first time seeing Dr. Johnson. The visit was for a physical, but the only thing he "physically" checked was my heart beat. He didn't perform the typical physicals that I was use to getting from other doctors such as...testing my reflexes, checking my ears, my eyes, my throat. When he ordered my lab work, he didn't order a urine test.?!?!. Not sure why he chose to neglect these standard procedures because I was a new patient. He did like to talk though, and to be fair I thought he was thorough in some respects when talking to me about my lab results. He was late to my appointment about 20 minutes or so (not terribly late) but this was consistent with other reviews so it seems that this should be expected every tome you have an appointment. Not sure if he really is a good doctor or not but he didn't satisfy my expectations.

When I left Scripps 8 years ago vowing never to return, I didn't yet know Dr. Benjamin Johnson who would be become my primary care physician at UCSD Health. As a popular professor of internal medicine at UCSD Medical School, Dr. Johnson brought passion and cutting-edge knowledge to his patients and medical students. Simply put, Dr. Johnson is the best doctor I have ever had in my life which is why I followed him when he left UCSD Health to join Scripps Carmel Valley Medical Group. Five years ago, I messaged Dr. Johnson an inquiry regarding where I might find information about the breast cancer diagnosis I had received that day. He responded with a thoughtful message containing several online resources, his personal explanation of my type of cancer, and a list of specialists referrals he had already made. His message was written at 10:00PM that day - and Dr. Johnson was in the middle of his vacation. In the 8 years I have been under his care, I have never felt that he wasn't listening or didn't care about my well-being. His extraordinary thoroughness and incredibly incisive medical mind are equaled only by his compassion and thoughtfulness.

Been a patient of Dr. Johnson for 5+ years, at UCSD and now Scripps. Surprised by the negative reviews I’ve seen. I’m 43, so I’ve had many primary care docs as I’ve moved around the county- and I’ve never thought much of their abilities...until I met Dr. Johnson. He is 1) highly intelligent, 2) passionate about learning, and 3) accurate in diagnosing. I don’t think other primary care docs are nearly as knowledgeable and accurate. 100% guarantee you will be in good hands with Dr. Johnson.

I found Dr. Johnson to be knowledgeable and sensitive to patient care. During this current pandemic, he responded to my messages within the same day and at times we'll into the evening. That's dedication not often seen.

The best doctor of my 60+ year-old life

I have had nothing but great results with Dr Johnson. My sister caught a bad bug last December and was diagnosed with Strep. I caught the same thing from her. Both of us had no sore throat so Dr Johnson told me strep is misdiagnosed frequently and he was right! No antibiotics would have helped me and they didn’t help my sister either. He has been very thorough and took the time to explain his rational. He had good information to share with me on nutrition which I appreciated since medical school doesn’t cover it in their curriculum. He’s into learning and avoiding using medication unless needed which aligns with my own goals. He was on time for both of my appointments.

Very bad experience this morning for my first annual check with Dr. Johnson since my previous nice doctor has left. The appointment was at 9:30. I checked in at 9:20 and didn't see him till 10:15. And, that was after I complained to the nurse after half an hour waiting already. This doctor doesn't know how to connect with patients and is incompetent in dealing with appointments. His explaination was that he wanted to spend as much time as possible with his patients. Well, maybe just his previous patient. I felt very frustrated that I had to wait for so long while a doctor is dealing with non-emergency situation. At the check, he suggested not do a routin urine check as he said the results will likely come back the same as last year. I was surprised to hearing that coming from a doctor. If I do this assumption every year, we don't need to see any doctors at all. Please, save your time and don't see this doctor. Purely waste of time.

No, he is not returning calls and the promise to call back in a few hours means you will be contacted back in a day or two while your symptoms are terrible and other doctors will see you in an hour!
