Lee Chan's Online Review Report Card

I was a patient at this practice for many years when Dr Wellman Tsang was my PCP. After he passed, I saw Dr. Chan. I had never met a doctor who was dismissive and uncaring before. He didnt  provide the care that I thought me and my family deserved, so we left and found a new family doctor who is amazing.I requested to have my medical records sent to my new doctor so that he can have my complete medical history. I brought the request in person to the office; a month later, the request still wasnt fulfilled. I left 2 messages and never got a call back either time. Please see Shaun Cs review from 10 months ago. Every detail is correct. That person who had to suffer the whole month of October 2019, because Dr Chan could not correctly diagnose a liquidfilled lung, was my mother. She passed in October 2020.

This was my aunts doctor until about 2 months ago and since she speaks very little English, I felt I really needed to share her experience with Dr. Chan, as he almost cost her her life. Seriously. I go into detail below, but essentially this doctor failed to diagnose her, let alone even test her for anything, or treat her with respect, AND SHE HAD STAGE 4 LUNG CANCER. How any respectable doctor misses lungs filled with 2L of fluid is beyond me. Last year, my aunt went to Dr. Chan (her former primary) late October because she was having difficulty breathing and constantly coughing. It wasnt when exerting herself, it was constant not being able to breathe in completely. He listened to her lungs, said they sounded clear, that she probably had acid reflux and prescribed an antacid. She sees him again within a few days after taking the antacid because it worsened; she couldnt breathe fully and could barely walk 15 ft. He basically wrote her off, telling her that that was normal, but switched antacids and told her to go to cardiologist. Didnt explain why to her. Listened to her lungs again and didnt offer an xray. She tells him that shes experiencing pain that shifts around her body; he examines her upper torso, tells her nothings wrong and that she should take antianxiety medication. That is absolutely ridiculous, this tells you so much about how he practices medicine; he didnt believe/take her pain seriously and writes it off as anxiety. Terrible. She goes again for a third time (3 visits in 2 weeks) because its worsened even more. She literally couldnt walk more than 5ft w/o having to stop and is kept up all night coughing. He listened to her lungs AGAIN and said they were CLEAR. After this, my aunt asks should she get a blood test, to which he responds, you just had your blood examined 3 months ago, there wasnt anything wrong. I really dont know whats wrong with you/how to fix you (translated from Cantonese, with attitude). ARE YOU SERIOUS!?! YOURE SUPPOSED TO BE THE DOCTOR. ITS YOUR JOB TO FIGURE OUT WHATS WRONG WITH YOUR PATIENTS! My aunt then asks could it be bronchitis or pneumonia? To which Dr. Chan says no, your lungs sound really clear. But I cant really do anything other than order you an xray. So, she has an xray taken and lo and behold, theres a shadow in her lungs. He calls her up to tell her about the shadow and instructs her to now go for a blood test to confirm the presence of fluid in her lungs (guess he shouldve listened to her) and get approval for a CT scan. That night she cant take it anymore as she can barely breathe just resting and goes to the ER. They immediately take an Xray and see that her lungs are full of fluid. So, they keep her overnight and the next day immediately drain her lungs pulling out 2 liters of fluid. TWO LITERS!!! AND DR. CHAN SAID THEY SOUNDED CLEAR AFTER LISTENING 3 TIMES! The ER sends the fluid to be tested and that, combined with the xray is what gives her the stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis. Her daughter calls Dr. Chan to discuss the diagnosis and kinda calls him out on why he didnt hear the 2l of fluid (politely, just asking why). This leads to him being very short and rude with my aunt on their next phone call. She has since switched primaries and is now very happy with her current doctor who actually cares about her. Theres so much in this experience that is so unacceptable and I cant believe hes still practicing. If you have a patient thats coming to you for help/relief from severe pain and shortness of breath 3 times in 2 weeks after typically only coming in for annual physicals, that should tell you something. To not take her seriously, not make any real effort to properly diagnose her, when she was clearly suffering (from stage 4 lung cancer!) shows me a clear lack of commitment to care. Dr. Chan was absolutely useless as a doctor and did not contribute in any way to her eventual diagnosis. Hes lucky she was able to get a diagnosis else

Speaking with Dr. Chans receptionist is absolutely frustrating and unfruitful. Shes quite unhelpful, especially when trying to reschedule an appointment. Rather than mention any available times or alternative dates, its just silence until I ask very specifically about a very specific day or week. Then shell bother looking. Heres a typical sequence:ME: Does Dr. Chan have any availability this week in the afternoon?RECEPTIONIST: nope... Me: Ok...how about next week? I wont be able to make it this week.RECEPTIONIST: ................theres nothing this weekMe: (enthusiastic face palm) Ok...how about next week?RECEPTIONIST: ................Me: Any availability next Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday?RECEPTIONIST: How about this Friday?Me: ...I wont be able to make it this week. Does he have any availability next Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday?RECEPTIONIST: nope...................................................................Me: Can we look at the week after?It took 10min and countless palms to the forehead to reschedule my appointment this way. I finally just took the first one that came out of her mouth, and Im exhausted. Does anybody want to cuddle?

This doctor Lee T Chan is terrible.  Not only is he unprofessional in dealing with my family, he also does not do his due diligence when it come to patient care.  He is suppose to review results before a procedure and neglect to do so in our situation.  How hard is it to review a lab result??  Exactly!   When questioned about it, He pushes his responsibility as a  Primary physician to other specialist doctors to do the work and dodges the question.  Then he ends the conversation by having up the phone.  So unprofessional!!  Who tells their patients why you have so many questions and ask am I the doctor or are you the doctor?  Taking advantage of elderly that do not speak English well is not a nice look.  He takes no responsibility and I absolutely agree with the precious a.  [ll I can say is hes a terrible doctor & if anyone  is looking for a one, hes definitely not who Id recommend]

Dr. Chan is currently my mother in laws pcp because her old pcp is retiring from the practice.  My mother in law recently suffered from a minor stroke & was finally discharged home.  During her hospital stay, he told the hospital staffs hed make his visit to check her condition but NEVER showed up.  When she finally went home, her blood sugar was outrageously high.  Dr. Chan specifically told both my mother in law & my sister in law hed adjust her insulin dosage & reduce the number of injection.  Guess what?  When my sister in law picked up the prescription, the medication was totally different from what he had told them verbally.  She double checked the prescription & he wrote the wrong dosage.  Right away, she calls him to verify.  His response was between 35 units & 25 units is only 10 units different & will make no difference if she injects 35 units instead of 25.  But lets try 25 units for now & adjust later as needed.   Ok, he made an error & did not even admit or apologize.  2nd, he refused to write a prescription for the meter test strips because he said her insurance only allows 1 test strip usage per day.  How pathetic does this sound?  Ive never heard such thing that insurance only allow diabetic patients to test his or her blood sugar 1x per day only.  All I can say is hes a terrible doctor & if anyone  is looking for a one, hes definitely not who Id recommend

Dr Chan Lee Tat is the most compassionate and thorough doctor!  He is always thinking about whats best for his patients overall vs just treating symptoms.  He is my 84 year old aunties doctor and treats her with extreme care and compassion.  We feel very fortunate that my aunt has Dr Chan advocating for her health and quality of life.

These are first impressions as I just became Dr. Chans patient after moving to SF and the Richmond District.He was very thorough and focused on wellness, not just ailments, as other reviewers have noted. I liked him as a person, maybe not medically significant but I feel we will be able to communicate better because of it.I was disappointed by a couple of moments in our discussion. One was when he scoffed at the diet my previous doctor had recommended to me and that has worked well for me. The other was when he asked how I chose him and I mentioned an online review site (not Yelp), which he clearly considered a stupid way to choose a physician. Time will tell whether I conclude, as one other reviewer did, that he isnt willing to listen to me or other doctors Im seeing.I care about this issue because I stayed with my DCarea primary care physician for 30 years precisely because she treated me as an adult participant in my medical decisions. Im not willing to be talked down to as was perhaps normal for doctorpatient relationships in the past.

Lousy service, rude behavior do not see this jerk!

I have been a patient of Dr Chans for 11 years. In that time I have found him to be attentive, dedicated and careful in his treatment of me. His office has also been very good about squeezing me in when a sudden illness or condition has arisen. I think what I like most about Dr Chan is that he listens carefully and considers what I have to say in making a diagnosis or suggesting a treatment. Its that somewhat rare situation where you feel like your doctor is also a partner in helping you best manage your health.
