I had a full right knee replacement in mid-November 2024. My experience with Dr. Shin and his Surgery Coordinator, Gloria Ortega, was excellent! I always like to say that knee surgery is not for sissies. Dr. Shin and Gloria made the experience highly-manageable! The knee surgery itself went perfectly and, cosmetically, my scar from it is very thin. Dr. Shin was kind and caring both pre- and post-op. Gloria is a superstar who solved a number of problems that arose involving things from the cancellation of my in-home PT plan the day after surgery (and solving the problem immediately) to answering the many questions I had over several months. She get backs to you in a very timely fashion, generally within several hours. I'm out walking and enjoying life again and I owe it to Dr. Shin and his team! Highly recommend!!
Professional, educational and caring. Dr Shin asked all the right questions, staff was very friendly! Excellent Care!
You'll be in very good hands with Dr. Shin and his employees. Efficient, thorough, amazing care.
Dr Edward Shin and Staff are very efficient and professional. Dr Shin addressed all of my orthopedic needs. He is compassionate and cares about his patients. His office in Burlingame has plenty of parking. I'm glad my pain management MD referred him. I have seen a few Orthopedic Surgeons and Dr. Shin is number #1 on my list. Thank you Dr. Shin for caring and helping me with my severe knee discomfort.
Dr. Shin performed three different types of surgery on me (meniscus repair, rotator cuff repair and hip replacement surgery). I am very pleased with the results of every surgery. Dr. Shin and his staff were very helpful during the entire process.
Let's face it--- who wants to see a surgeon? Especially the ones shoving surgery down your throat -- when a more conservative route might be better. This is my second gig with Dr. S and his staff -- 1st time was for a total shoulder replacement. Instead of doing it himself, he had the humility to refer me to someone else who had more experience w the type of issues i had w my shoulder. So now I"m back w 2 bad knees -- compliments of too many marathons and other body crushing sports. Dr S outline every possible option for me -- the super conservative route of injections/anti-inflammatories, a less invasive surgical option and a pretty grueling surgical option. Because he took the time to know my history and me, he understood that I've undergone 3 significant, invasive surgeries in 3 years, including a spinal fusion which resulted in years of complications and post op procedures that I'm still under going. After talking about all 3 options at length, he allowed me to choose w/ no pressure. After I chose, I asked him what he thought-- and it was what he would have proposed. We will be going the less invasive surgical route because I'm too full of cortisone from my spine and shoulder from previous years and already on a host of anti-inflammatories. After what my body has been through, the more invasive surgery would likely be far more taxing than normal. This is what garners one's trust in one's physician -- and he has mine 100%. Shout out to his staff - Michael, Aaron and Heather -- who not only run a tight ship. but are just as buttoned up about my case, my history and me. They feel like family. Once again, less than 5 mins wait time -- and that's after I was late!
I was referred to Dr Shin when our orthopedic surgeon was going to retire and sold his practice. I had a torn tendon that had snapped back repaired so I didn't have to have a more extensive surgery. I'm very happy with the care I received from everyone at the surgery center and his office staff in Burlingame has been great. I continued to have follow up appointments and PT until recently when Dr Shin was satisfied with my recovery. My surgery was May 2023. I plan on continuing to see Dr Shin for other issues I have and have referred other's to him.
Does not accept covered california plans at all. What are these docs going to do when an even higher percentage of people are gig workers and have to buy their own insurance? So, I never saw him.
Heather Masangkay is a very excellent worker. She demonstrates exceptional knowledge of her duties. She responds quickly to patients' needs & emails. Keep it up, Heather.
Dr. Shin performed a Rotator Cuff surgery on my right shoulder on 01-11-23. During the rehab period of my surgery I continued to have pain. During my scheduled "post-op visits" I reported to Dr. Shin the type and quality of pain, and when I was having it, only to be told by Dr. Shin, "this is normal healing pain, and is of no concern". After my May 25th visit, I continued to have the same pain in the same place and reported this to Dr. Shin, and again I was told by him that it is "normal pain". I have had a number of surgeries on both my right and left Sholder's and know the difference from "rehab pain, surgical, and something is wrong" pain. So in June of this year, I sought a second opinion from a Sports Medicine Dr. in Redwood City. After my initial visit and discussion of my pain, an MRI was ordered and this MRI showed "an anomaly" on the right shoulder joint itself. In my subsequent visit, it was recommended that exploratory surgery be performed. July 6th, 2023, exploratory surgery on my right shoulder was performed, and it was subsequently discovered that one of the three anchors put in my right shoulder joint by Dr. Shin was placed and protruded through the right shoulder joint, and was cutting the underside of my deltoid muscle group with movement of the right shoulder during rehab. It was also discovered that the Bicep Tendon repair that was performed by Dr. Shin, had to be released and redone. In August of this year, as a direct result of these findings, I sent Dr. Shin a letter notifying him I was no longer going to be his patient and shared the reasons why with him. Dr. Shin's response to me on the phone was "yes, I made a mistake, I am only human", at which point I ended the call. The "take away here" is not that I endured three months of 7+ right shoulder pain that was to be relieved by Tylenol. Dr. Shin continued to dismiss my pain, and NEVER ordered an MRI or any other diagnostic test to get to the root cause of my shoulder pain. The fact that a second surgery was performed is clear evidence that something was very wrong and Dr. Shin did nothing about it!!! Anyone considering using Dr. Shin as their Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon should ask themselves the question "if they want a one and done" attitude of a Dr. that believes nothing could be wrong with their surgery. In my opinion has an arrogant attitude - and could lead to the comment "this is normal recovery pain" and does nothing to understand why pain is still there months after having surgery to repair my shoulder in the first place. One of the first tenents of a physician's Hippocratic oath is "TO DO NO HARM. Clearly Dr. Edward Shin needs to revisit what it means when a patient continues to have a chief complaint of shoulder pain after surgery that he performed to remedy it. What unmitigated hubris to have the position Dr. Shin did in my case. NOTE: Due to nature of photo's unable to show.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
