The doctor was ok and attentive, but you can’t get them to answer the phone or return any messages.

Several doctors have recommended me to Endocrinology, but have all said they rarely take any patients. I worked for months to get a referral but they flat out denied it. Not sure what the point of a doctors office that doesn't take patients that need to see them. They may be the only way for me to get better but I'll never get to see them to find out.

The doctor I was assigned to here has done the bare minimum. Didn't ask about any of my symptoms or health history, just looked at bloodwork and perscribed synthroid. I asked to add TPO antibody testing (comes standard on a Quest Diagnostics Thyroid Panel) and he will not. He said UCSF doesn't monitor TPO antibodies and can't do anything for Hashimotos. He then set the message so I could not reply...Some bedside manner. It's clear this doctor could care less about what's actually wrong with his patients and help them. I'm also shocked at how closed minded this doctor is at UCSF (a research hospital that is supposedly top notch).

I called this practice two months ago to try and get seen. In order to get an appointment, they require your GP to fax over quite a bit of records and other information. So, I dutifully made an appointment with my GP, and had him send them everything they asked for. It took a couple of weeks to get this done. Then, I waited....and waited.... Finally, I called to ask when I could get seen. Only then did they inform me that they had received all my information, but that they are not taking any new patients. Sure would have been nice if they had told me that at the outset, so I did not have to waste 2 months and pay for an appointment with my GP.

These doctors aka residents know nothing about thyroid disorders. If you have a thyroid issue of any kind your better off going to a ENT(ear nose throat doctor) Don't waste your time coming here because the doctors are clueless and don't listen to the patients or your doctor who sent you there on a referral for specific testing in which they refused too do.

I feel like it's rare for people to give good reviews to doctors so I wanted to share my positive experience with the UCSF Diabetes Clinic! When I was first diagnosed in 2019, I continued to see my existing endocrinologist, a small family practice in the East Bay. Very quickly, I started getting frustrated at his lack of rigour (he struggled to interpret data meaningfully) and felt that I was more invested in improving my outcome than he was. A friend who had been diabetic for a long time recommended the UCSF clinic, as did my physician. I started by calling UCSF to learn about how to get scheduled for an appointment. The front desk person was pretty unhelpful - telling me that they reserve their clinic time for the most severe cases or people who don't respond to traditional treatment well and that I'd need a referral from my doctor to start the process. They would then accept or decline my case, based on how severe my condition was. It turns out this was mostly untrue (I am a pretty normal case). My doctor referred me and within a couple of weeks, I had an appointment scheduled with their diabetes educator, Krystal, who made time in her schedule to see me sooner than her first available appointment. A few months after this, I had my first appointment with Dr. Hsiao, one of the endocrinologists. Whilst their staff is very busy, they are responsive to messages and generally very empathetic and great at listening to my concerns. This experience so far has been one of my most positive medical encounters yet. The clinic is very well versed in the latest research and trends related to managing diabetes (and in fact, participates actively). They also have direct access to many medical technology vendors, which is a tremendous help with the onboarding and insurance approval process. Plus, the view of San Francisco from their waiting room is pretty epic. The only downsides are dealing with the bureaucracy of the rest of the UCSF system. It sometimes takes a long time to get on the phone with staff, and their staff are efficient at the expense of friendliness. UCSF can be expensive too (I made the mistake of going to their labs once - they billed about double what LabCorp did for the same blood work), so you'll need decent insurance. All this said though, it's been well worth the effort.

BE AWARE: This practice is staffed with medical residents, not experienced doctors. I have to agree with the other 1-star reviews, UCSF is a great RESEARCH institution and medical school but it sorely lacks in patient care and I've had an overall negative experience. Coming from the UCLA health system to here was like going from a high-tech hospital of the future to a community clinic. I come here to manage a thyroid condition and these are all the issues I have with this place: 1. It's insanely expensive, even with the best health insurance on the market, blood tests run up to $600-900. At UCLA, it was 1/10th of the cost. Any procedures beyond that and you'll be paying thousands of dollars. 2. Sub par patient care with revolving door doctors. The doctors are informed and educated but you'll be stuck with a medical intern or resident. The actual endocrinologist won't even see you or will take 2 seconds to look at your record and sign off on it. That means that the NEXT time you have a follow-up visit you'll be seeing a completely different doctor. I haven't seen the same doctor ever, it's a revolving door of residents which makes continuity of care impossible. 3. Because of #2 and their revolving door of medical residents, you can never get a timely answer from anyone if you email with questions about prescriptions or dosages. The medical residents don't care about you as a patient because you will no longer be their patient in a few months. Why bother going the extra mile? 4. Getting an appointment is a nightmare-- they are so full that you have to make an appointment 5-6 months in advance or you won't get in at all. There's no flexibility in rescheduling and it's just bad. Really bad. Overall, as a former health care consultant, I encourage you to fill the patient surveys and really air out your opinion of this place. They do read them and those surveys affect their national rankings so be honest and let them hear from you. I moved my primary care to OneMedical and Endocrine care to Sutter Health and never looked back.
