List of Ronald Shiell's Reviews
Squamous cell carcinoma on my ear, Dr. Shiell and his staff were very attentive and thorough, while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. I felt very informed and confident that I had gone to the right doctor. Dr. Shiell sutured my wound, as would have also been my preference. All in all, my experience with this doctor was way better than with most! I highly recommend Dr. Shiell and West Dermatology.
I feel very lucky to have Dr. Shiell as my dermatologist. In 2017 he was recommended to me by my primary care doctor. To check out a dicey dark mole on my neck. We began annual appointments and now that I'm in my fifties, I see him twice a year for preventive skin checks.Dr. Sheill is a knowledgeable expert in the dermatology field. (Research his bio, it is amazing) With that, he is always in demand. Not just here in Palm Springs but elsewhere in California too.But over the years, I've learned that he is also a caring and diligent doctor. Dr. Sheill has taken the time to learn my personal health history. And for a person like me who can become very anxious in an examination room, he has been nothing but calm and professional. Getting things done expertly and confidently. And best of all, pain free!He is reliable, timely, and even answers all the questions I have written down before-hand on my list. It doesn't get any better than that really.Thank You Dr. Shiell and staff. Including the desk staff, you are all wonderful.Keep up the good work!
Highly professional doctor. Very nice and kind person.
My first skin cancer surgery was done by a plastic surgeon, and I was very pleased with the outcome -- very little scarring and no bumps. Dr Shiell did my second and third surgeries, and in both cases the stitching was very sloppy in comparison. I had bumps, flaps, and a pit (yeah I had a lot of places done) and one of the nostrils collapsed. I feel like I'm now permanently ugly.
Dr. Shiell did my MOHS surgery. He cleared me of squamous cells on the first cutting of the surgery, Sutured up and out the door in one hour. His office staff is friendly and efficient. Highly recommend !
I feel very lucky to have Dr. Shiell as my dermatologist. He has been my doctor since 2017 and I have been seeing him annually ever since. He has always been there for me and I truly appreciate his expertise.I had a small growth that I discovered a few years back and dismissed it as just some sort of age spot. Since it was hidden from view and never bothered me, I never brought it up. I just kind of forgot about it. Well recently I came across that spot again and nearly fainted. It looked like it had morphed into some sort of serious skin cancer for sure. Asymmetrical border, mottled coloring, bigger diameter than a pencil eraser. Yikes! All the earmarks of melanoma. (mental note, always tell the dermatologist about any skin issues no matter how insignificant. That is what he's there for!)I immediately emailed West Dermatology Palm Springs and also phoned. They were able to get me an appointment in about a week. When I arrived, I was surprised to find a new and improved waiting room. It was very spacious and clean. If you haven't been here in a while, they created a brand new office next door. The office staff impressed me with their directness and efficiency. It was if they listened to every criticism they ever got and addressed them all boldly when they moved.Within ten minutes after signing in I was given clear directions to the examination room. This room was also very clean, and had a high-end adjustable examination chair. I was welcomed by an assistant who gave me a new folded patient gown and clear instructions on how to put it on.Dr. Schiell arrived shortly after. He already knew why I was there. You could tell he was engaged, focused and ready to help any way he could. The perfect man for the job.I gave him my worrisome back story and he got right to it. Immediately taking a look at that horrible mole. Making me and my health his priority. He was able to tell me right away that he would have it removed and tested. Then with the look only a doctor with true empathy and understanding of a cancer diagnoses could give. He confidently reassured me several times that it didn't look like something I should worry about. I literally breathed for the first time all week. I had been so scared.During the rest of the examination Dr. Shiell carefully scanned over the rest of my body top to bottom, front and back. I believe that because of his years of experience and near constant flow of patients, he has developed a keen eye for the detail and taxonomy of skin growths and conditions. With the ability to spot any potential trouble from a mile away.I was very nervous and babbling. Cracking stupid jokes to ease my anxiety. But he remained calm and professional. Staying a thoughtful and thorough doctor throughout my entire time with him.He carefully removed that scary mole and another mole I didn't know about. I didn't feel a thing while he did it. Both the expert assistant and the doctor were excellent.I have had some serious medical issues over the last few years and have had my share of doctors and staff. I would call Dr. Schiell a treasure to hold on to. One of those worldly and experienced professionals that you can truly depend on. I would recommend him highly. And yes, when my test results came back both samples were negative. I am very happy! Thank You Dr. Shiell and staff for your professionalism. I am so very grateful and look forward to seeing you again for my next appointment.
FRONT DESK STAFF ARE INCOMPETENT AND UNHELPFUL. Let me start by saying that DOCTOR SHIELL is GREAT and I have no gripe with him. The reason for the 2 stars are the front desk people. On Tuesday Doctor Shiell prescribed a medication that my insurance wanted to know more about before they authorized it. Fair enough. It is now close of business on Friday and my insurance are saying they have sent several requests to the Doctor's office for information. After speaking to Valerie, Debbie and Marcella from the Doctor's office I received several different stories. "Our fax machine has been broken" was one. The insurance agent gave me their direct number and I pleaded with Valerie and Debbie to call them, that's all they had to do. They said they would, but they didn't. It takes 72 hours to get this authorized, so that means, because of the incompetents of these people, I would have not got the medication till 9 days after it was prescribed. I ended up paying for it myself because I needed it.

Outstanding Physician
Not only is Dr. Shiell the best dermatologist in Palm Springs, he's the best doctor in town as well.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
