My experiences were bad in terms of quality of care, and worse in terms of manipulation towards super expensive treatments and overcharges. Too much to write again but I told some stories on Google reviews, please see some shocking happenings there, though they seem to get the bad reviews scraped off pretty quickly.
I explained in some detail how I was ripped off by this place. I quoted Carley's admission. They replied mendaciously, eg "no one would sign for the check.". That a lie. We never got a check. I asked him to send it again since that supposed check wasn't cashed but he refused. The answer has other misinformation and we've heard from his staff and former staff that they knowingly and systematically do this. I plan to take them to small claims court as soon as I can resolve certain medical conditions. They've paid off former staffers they cheated. Their answer has vague and intentionally misleading statements which I will prove in court when I'm well enough. I can't put more energy into this immediately. Carley also tried to get me to join some funky church he's involved with. It was very offensive to me. Their reply also lied by saying there was one overcharge whereas you can see from my re-posts of our exchange, I'd documented no fewer that SIX. It was systematic. I'm a UC Prof who had to retire to deal with medical problems. I could go on about the horrible unnecessary orthdonture I got on his advice that cost me 4 good teeth, many thousand of dollars and 3 YEARS of agonizing pain. I'm so happy with my new honest competent dentist. Carley's crowns fell out within days, sometimes before I got home from that evil office. Then he'd blamee and say "You knocked the crown off already?" -- This just in: as I documented, Carley cheated me of over $1400 and he just sent me a check for $182 !
This is one of the best dental clinics I have ever been to. I arrived at 8 AM and the staff was quite ready—hospitable and patient. My consultation for the treatment plan with Dr. Schaeffer was thorough and detailed. I also appreciate being able to choose my music for the TV on the ceiling. Highly recommend everybody with a compatible insurance to consider this clinic as the first choice in the area.
DO NOT GO HERE!! I got sepsis here from a dirty crown that Dr. Schaffer was having a hard time getting to fit just right. Schaffer was really good, I adored him but he's impatient. He couldn't get the crown to fit and kept taking it out and filing it down and he didn't properly sterilize it. His haste made me sick. When I went back the next day to Mountain and Sea for help Dr. Carley told me I had an "ingrown hair" and sent me on my way-no antibiotics, and zero concern or willingness to take responsibility. I went to the ER the next day (Saturday) with a golf ball sized lump on my jaw and a red rash running down my neck. I was given antibiotics, finally, and took my first pill at 3:00 that day. At 3am Sunday I awakened disoriented, nauseated and dripping wet with sweat. I called 911. By the time the paramedics arrived (they got lost) I was feeling better the antibiotic I had taken 12 hours earlier seemed to have kicked in and I had stabilized. I went back the following Thursday to have the crown removed so I could get this bacteria to leave my body. I could feel it in me, truly-nausea and bursts of heat, that's your body trying to heal. When Schaffer removed the crown we were greeted by the most putrid smell. Bacteria had been cooking and brewing just loving life under my new crown. It cost me almost $1,000 in ER & doctor visits for me to get proper care. Dr. Carley left town and barely agreed to pay me back saying it the infection was my fault. I spent $20K here in 2 years you'd think they'd be more gracious. Oh yeah, and they over charged me too this place is BS.
I'm writing this review because my experience at Mountain & Sea Dental was overwhelmingly negative in ways that felt avoidable and unnecessary. My biggest issue was the ongoing lack of clear, accurate information. I was always very explicit that I only wanted the work we had agreed on--no surprises, no additions. Despite that, I always left the office with innumerable extra fees and then was repeatedly told certain procedures would be covered by insurance, only to find out afterward that they weren't. During my final visit, I was absolutely clear I just wanted a cleaning and then was coerced into x-rays. I refused them THREE TIMES and they insisted I get them done, assuring me insurance would cover them. I had no time to explore this claim and consented, only to, of course, end up with a huge bill. Customer service at the front desk only added to the frustration. They were consistently dismissive, unhelpful, and at times outright rude. Any attempt to get clarity about billing or treatment was met with condescension or impatience. The whole office has an unfriendly, uncomfortable energy. The most troubling part of my experience was with the crown I received. I knew I was getting a crown--but no one told me until the day it was being placed that it would only cover half my tooth. It looks strange and totally atypical, and I would never have agreed to this approach if it had been explained to me ahead of time. I was essentially informed while sitting in the chair waiting for it to be put on, at which point I had no real ability to make an informed decision. To make matters worse, I now have to redo a root canal that I had done there just over a year ago. Quality dental work simply shouldn't fail that quickly. Overall, my experience with Mountain & Sea Dental involved unclear communication, lack of informed consent, poor customer service, and dental work that didn't hold up. I left feeling unheard, blindsided, and extremely disappointed. I would not recommend this office.

Dec 9 2025 Patient (me) to Dr Carley by email Dear Dr Carley, I’m contacting you about the repeated $224 lab fee that was added to my account. This charge is not permitted under current dental billing regulations, and I was billed for it six times. That comes to $ 1344 I am requesting an immediate refund of the total amount. Robert Antonucci I prefer to settle this with your office directly, but if we cannot resolve it promptly, I will need to take further action. Please let me know when I can expect the refund to be processed. -- Dec 12 Dr Carley reply by text: Dr Carley here. Give me a call when you get a chance. I would like to go over your account. -- Dec 14 Patient: I think our knowledge asymmetry precludes a productive discussion. I don't just want to be snowed. If you disagree with what I said, I'll proceed formally. But I'll try to ensure that all patients who were overcharged are made whole, and that we be compensated for our time. -- Dec 16, 2025 Dr Carley wrote: Please stand by procuring a check. -- >Note there he admits to the overcharge -- > Carley never sent the check and it's now Jan 6, 2026, so I texted: -- Jan 6, 2026 Patient (me) I've begun publicizing your theft from me, including your admission above. I want to make sure all the patients you've cheated in the past are made whole, and that all potential patients are forewarned. I promise I will initiate legal proceedings before the end of the week. I will never get tired of this but will simply continue doubling down.
Great dentist and staff Very professional, knowledgeable and attentive. I’m really happy to find my way out of Johnson Dental and their continual changing of staff…I would highly suggest this office to anyone
I am extremely satisfied with the exceptional service provided by my dental hygienist Shakari. Her professionalism, attention to detail, and thoroughness during the cleaning were exemplary. Shakari took the time to clearly explain each step of the procedure and offered valuable advice on maintaining optimal oral hygiene. The appointment was conducted efficiently and with great care, ensuring a comfortable experience throughout. For those of you who don’t like the dentist I highly recommend her services to anyone seeking knowledgeable and compassionate dental care.
First dentist was nice but did a bad job which had to be redone by another dentist who was rude, rushed and did an even worse job.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
