Get a second opinion before you undergo cataract surgery!
Don’t go see Dr Rex Hsei. His staffs are rude and very un professional.
Recently had cataract surgery from Dr. Rex Hsei in Santa Cruz. Very thorough, professional and excellent physician. I recommend him.
I went in for cataract surgery, and got one eye done. The surgery went extremely well. I'm waiting for the surgery of my second eye.All of the staff are warm, kind and attentive. They were responsive to my concerns and made necessary changes to be more accommodating to my needs. After the surgery, Dr. Hsei called me personally to check on my status, which I appreciate.
I've been here a few times, and both times I have the same conclusion. Rude and arrogant. He does not answer questions and he acts like he is put out to even have you in his office. When someone comes to a doctor for help, at least the dr. can have some compassion for a problem that will never go away and be a little more helpful with answering questions. I'm done.
My vision doctor for 10+ years. Did cataract surgery on both eyes, couldn't believe how easy it was. He shows concern and care and takes time to explain your situation. Highly recommend.
Dr. Hsei put the wrong lens in my eye during cataract surgery and also damaged the capsule behind the lens. I have very poor vision in the eye now and must always wear a contact lens in the eye to see somewhat clearly. His arrogant attitude following his mistakes made a very bad situation intolerable for me. It was not until three weeks after surgery and a discussion with my regular eye doctor that he admitted he had implanted the incorrect lens. I would definitely not recommend him.
Dr Hsei was never friendly as courteous as I was from my first appointment w/ him. He never advised me on the condition of my dry eye. Appeared to be irate easily. On one occasion, he came into the office chuckling in a ridiculing manner. Obviously, he wouldn't be responsible for his staff member in the optical shop breaking my well made prescription glasses. Of course, I left him for another eye doctor more professional than he is.
Dr. Hsei is not user friendly. I mentioned that I felt blown off by either his staff or him over my concern related to an ocular migrane. I asked the receptionist if i should come in. She said if i wanted to she would give me an appointment. I asked her to ask him if it was important to get it checked out and to call me back. No go. He got very upset at me mentioning this and snapped he didn't have time for this and threatened to end the exam.
Not the best experience. I wouldn't recommend this Dr.. Cataract surgery done in very cramped on site environment. Initially was asked to prepare any questions I had about the surgery, bur never got a response until the the day of the surgery, the Dr. called and seemed annoyed that he had to respond. In the long run I also required Lasix surgery, that wasn't covered by my insurance. Won't be going back.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
