Ucla Santa Monica Medical Center's Online Review Report Card

I switched over to UCLA from Kaiser after having such horrible experiences there. My mom was a patient for many years at UCLA and was misdiagnosed and died of cancer. During that time I remember the ER having all private rooms for each patient. When I recently went the rooms were all filled and had beds all out in the open with no privacy. I was out in the open next to the front staff with a ton of other people. This didn't bother me that much and was actually better because I was able to get staffs attention. While I waited for about 3 hrs one woman had a cut open foot with no mask on and for some reason the nurses kept ignoring her. There was homeless man in the room next to me which had a window you could look through were I had a visual of them trying to resuscitate this poor man. For about an hour I kept hearing the doctor screaming at this man and then they had to bring security in. So basically all the staff was in that room. I eventually was wheeled into the hospital. When my mom was in the hospital she had a private room. They now have one room with two beds shared. I didn't think it would be a big deal until I ran into two major issues. The first being there's only one remote to call the nurse which also controls the tv and that tv situation is a nightmare if you don't want to listen to even more noise. Luckily when I asked if the patient could keep it on mute she was compliant but was angry like I was disturbing her life. I mean if you're going to have TVs either have headphones or just take the stupid thing out and give people iPads and headphones. That's not fair to someone who is literally trying to get some sleep and forced to listen to! Then there's a panic button for the other patient to buzz the nurse if you don't have the control. When you hit the nurse button on either of these the remote will have the nurse speak to you through the speaker on the remote. That means one of the patients will have to communicate for you into the remote which is a NIGHTMARE! I was given two medications which were not supposed to be taken together and started getting serotonin syndrome. The other lady in the room was asleep and she had the controller so when I buzzed with the other button the nurse woke her up through the speaker. She started getting really agitated and it was giving me horrible anxiety because I didn't want to wake this woman up because she was elderly. I ended up walking out into the hallway to get a nurse. When that woman was discharged the next woman arrived at 1am and everyone woke me up. I hadn't slept in over 2 days prior to my condition and then when it was finally a nice time to sleep it was like a loud get together next to me. I ended up buzzing the nurse and told her either ask them to please quite down or give me a pill to sleep. My health was getting worse by not getting any sleep. All of my medications were wrong in the system they refused to give me a medication I've been on daily for years and if I was not on track of that I could have a seizure. They had random pills they kept giving me which ended up causing that horrible reaction which could've been fatal. A quick google search would tell you not to take those two pills. The next day they almost did it again. Make sure you google whatever the hell they're giving you so you don't OD. The nurses and doctor were all nice but when I checked their notes on that pill interaction they did not report it and in fact deleted the evidence of my taking them both at once by the nurse out of the system. They documented my reaction but never put down the cause of it which was the pills. Very shady and I'll be filing a grievance as that shows they screwed up.... If you are staying here make sure someone can bring you a thick jacket or blanket it's very cold inside there and any sort of toiletries down to nail clippers. I had a hang nail for some reason and staff told me there was nothing they could do to help me with that. I was eventually discharged but it's been a few days and my condition has gotten back to being worse again. It's a urgent medical condition so I'm super hesitant going back to this place again. I was warned the Westwood hospital was horrible so it seems like it's either UCLA or St. John's that are your options. If it wasn't for the medication screw up and the tv/nurse remote situation I'd give it way higher stars.

Worst experience with them I mad my appointment 3 months ago and day before my appointment I received a call from doctor office they said don’t take Helth net ppo plan anymore and doc is not able to see you if you want to come you have to pay from your pocket I am in a really bad situation I can’t Abel to work I was bleeding like anything in lot of pain now I was calling to schedule the appointment again they don’t have until August

I didn’t get a solution to why I went in, and idk what’s going to happen with billing yet (lol)… but just wanted to say every single nurse, doctor, transport specialist, and medical tech that helped me were so so nice! I was really pleasantly surprised.

Appalling performance by nurses at this hospital. I'm a family member and felt extremely concerned for the care of a cancer patient. The nurse station is directly outside the door and all I can hear from the room is loud laughing and idle talk even during hospital quiet hours (announced every evening). Meanwhile if you buzz them for pain medication, drinks (a nurse should know that chemo makes you very dehydrated), or urgent bed pan help, you can wait hours before someone does anything despite constant reminders. At one point, the nurse took so long in coming by with a bed pan (which should have already been in the room to begin with) that the patient had to shit in a trash can. They then subsequently made us wait so long before assisting with clean up that we had to do it ourselves. They talk openly about the patient as though he's not a human being lying in front of them. After chemo, the patient was extremely thirsty. This chemo meant that he was not able to drink cold drinks. I asked for a drink and the nurse gave us a refrigerated carton of apple juice. I told her he could not drink cold drinks and she told us that we just need to wait until the apple juice warms up because apple juice needs to be refrigerated. I had to explain the process of pasteurization and sterility to her, which I don't think is too high of an expectation for a nurse. This hospital has treated the patient with humiliation and negligence. This staff should be ashamed of themselves.

Do not have a hernia operation here or your quality of life may be taken from you. If you have a small hernia, I would advise to live with it vs. going here and risking what they did to me. A Dr. Chandler surgeon told me that after the surgery I would be able to do everything I was able to do before the surgery. I lived with this small hernia for 27 years with no problems. I was able to do squats, sit-ups, and I had good sexual functionality. I figured I would eventually need to get it done though because the surgeon said it was safer to get it done than it was to live with it. Wrong! It was only a little hernia that was barely visible. I woke up from the surgery and the surgeon told me he found two other little hernias so he fixed them too through the same incision. I wish he didn't elect to do that. He put a piece of mesh in me that covered all three hernias and apparently attached it to my spermatic cord which resulted in chronic inflammation that created varicoceles and loss of sexual function. I lived with inflammation and discomfort ever since. I feel lit every minute of every day. I cannot do squats or sit-ups without irritating the area and this surgery has basically ruined the quality of my life. I had three follow-up appointments where I tried to express what I was going through, and I was treated as if I was making up a story and it appeared this surgeon was leading the conversation in his intended direction of denial. Every follow-up appointment required waiting time. I am only writing this to advise not to go here for this particular type of surgery. I don't know about how they are about other areas of medicine but the hernia surgery department is one I wish I never had anything to do with. Even when I got a second opinion from a different surgeon at UCLA Medical Center, it resulted in a waste of time where the surgeon railroaded the conversation and basically didn't let me talk. I think he was basically protecting UCLA more than he was addressing my concerns. At least he was forthcoming about one thing. He said I could never go back to the way I was and that he probably would have advised not to have the operation in the first place. I wish the surgeon that did the operation told me that. After experiencing this result and change of life, I wouldn't advise having a hernia operation at any facility unless your guts were literally hanging out and I wouldn't advise having a hernia surgery at this facility even if your guts were hanging out.

Once through the main doors and past the reception area. Everyone was great! The doctors nurses and a big shoutout to my anastisiologist. That was in October. Liked it so much gonna do it again tomorrow!

Do not go here beware of fraud and forge signature this hospital is not trustworthy whatever you do please avoid at all costs

This Hospital is simply amazing i mean everyone in the lobby to the baby delivery ward to NICU and post partum they all care and are so knowledgeable, my daughter had an emergency 28 week delivery baby girl 2lbs.10oz.and this team is amazing baby and my daughter are doing great,and a lot of prayer.thank u and God Bless.
