Left the exam room to get medical supplies and was gone 20 minutes. Came back in, had no supplies and no explaination or apology. Looked at me and said had to go out to get supplies. ?? Got done stitching, left the room with no further explanation other than he would prescribe an antibiodic cream and I could get it at the pharmacy. Nurse had to clean up the blood running down my face and apply ...

Offered no help or empathy towards me. Decided to criticize my personal appearance instead of giving medical advise. Was not knowledgeable

My personal experiences with Dr. Mati were horrible. I felt he was arrogant, judgmental, extremely rude, and dismissive of me and my symptoms. I felt it was the worst care I’ve ever received from a medical professional. He literally laughed at my symptoms during one trip to the ER for severe abdominal pain. Another time he refused my request to be seen by a different doctor for a GI bleed and told me I could see him or I could leave the emergency room and take the chance of bleeding out before I could get in to see my Gastroenterologist. I don’t expect to find a Dr. House who’ll magically diagnose all my ailments at the ER but, before Dr. Mati, I did expect that I’d be given a thorough exam free if ridicule, judgments and what I felt were threats. I was eventually diagnosed with serious autoimmune, autonomic, and other conditions that were the cause of my symptoms but, because of my experiences with him, I’m fearful of seeking help at the ER. Hopefully Dr. Mati figures out that he wasn’t gifted with omniscience the moment he received his medical degree - and that knowledge mixed with kindness, compassion, and humbleness make for a great doctor.

If it were possible his rating would be MUCH lower. I wish I had never crossed his path at VCMC that evening. Keep in mind I've been receiving care for my entire family through the VCMC health system for decades, which have set the bar extremely high from day one. Never have I came across a physician who did not meet this standard until I had the displeasure of meeting Dr. Mati. It isn't the direct care that had me extremely displeased but it was his overall arrogance and god-awful bedside manner. My son was experiencing quite the emergency and this pompous jerk argued in circles with me for a good five minutes about how only his suggestion mattered. I then tried to reason with him to only have everything I said/suggested to be thrown to the side with absolutely zero consideration where his only concern was to reiterate himself word-for-word, throwing his doctorate around the room. I have been in the medical field myself for quite sometime and what this guy failed to realize had his own head not been so far up his own, well you get the point, was that he was not arguing with your average parent. He attempted to back me into a corner, he failed to see that obviously no one knows my child like I, and that I not only knew exactly what I was talking about, but I too had the facts to back me. It wasn't until I requested to sign my son out against medical advice that his entire demeanor did a complete 180 and he backed down, then listened to me. I have the upmost respect for all physican's, I admire what they do, and I would have never spoke to one as I had to do within this unfortunate experience. I was not going to allow this man, this physician who had no regard for me as the mother of his pediatric patient to push me around. This is my baby, I can never replace him and I will never allow anything/one to compromise his well being. It is quite unfortunate for not only I, but for my son to have experienced this during such an extremely difficult time in his young life.
