Douglas Grant's Online Review Report Card

I saw Dr. Grant this morning to discuss options for managing my chronic upper abdominal pain that hasn't responded to OTC pain meds. At first, he seemed nice and thorough. I like that he thought chronic pancreatitis is the cause (especially with my weight loss) given that my former GI doc didn't seem to want to consider it despite my symptoms and location of the pain. When he did the "follow my eyes" test, things got bad. I often have a hard time not moving my head and rarely do providers get mad. When he noticed I was having difficulty, he said, "I need you to follow directions and I think you're mentally unstable to take oral pain meds". He talked to me like I was in the principal's office! WTF I wasn't there to be lectured and seriously considered walking out of the appointment as I was in tears. I told him I often get anxious with new doctors, along with depression and PTSD (some of it due to upsetting experiences with bad doctors). This comment came after I told him my psych DNP prescribes most of my meds and that Amitriptyline helps my depression and resolved my lower abdominal pain I had in my 20's. No compassion or apology for talking down to me. Of course, I listed my mental health history and meds on the paperwork I filled out online. He said I could try a pain patch, as he didn't want to prescribe oral meds given the GI side effects and not knowing the cause of my pain. Since my pain isn't musculoskeletal or neurological, I had a feeling my options would be limited but knew I needed an alternative to OTC meds. For this reason, along with my upsetting interaction, I will NOT go back and ask one of my other providers to prescribe the patch. I thought he'd be a great doc based on the positive reviews so I'm disappointed I didn't have the same experience. Getting doctors to take my symptoms seriously since the onset in June 2021 has been a struggle and  I don't need to be talked down to when I desperately need help.

I have been a patient of Dr. Grant for over 14 years.  He is a very kind and compassionate doctor who provides his patients with the best care. He is thorough in his approach and gets to the root cause of my pain. He always encourages a healthy lifestyle.  His office staff is wonderful too. I am fortunate to have Dr. Grant as my pain management physician.

Dr. Grant is the best pain management doctor around. He treats me with respect and is an excellent physician. I highly recommend Dr. Grant as he is a highly qualified physician.

Dr. Grant is the definition of a great doctor and actually hears the patient let me tell you why: (Sorry long post but worth hearing how Dr. Grant saves my life TRULY no BS!!!) Upon meeting Dr. Grant two years ago for my evaluation from a back injury I had on the job that Worker's Comp. didn't do anything about he was extremely attentive listener and did a exam on me and told me what his professional opinion was of what I had. He said we had to do EMG to confirm and he would order physical therapy.He was so great during the EMG and yes for me it was painful however he was sensitive to my needs during the process. It confirmed his professional opinion of what I had wrong and we continue to treat with steroid injections. They were amazing!Shortly after meeting Dr. Grant my nausea got really bad I started projectile vomiting I started blacking out I couldn't sleep I had to sleep sitting up. I Continue do follow ups to check in with Dr. Grant to treat my back injury he was very aware and I told him I'd be sent home from the ER four times. I was having really bad migraines worst in my life and Dr. Grant referred me to a neurologist but I couldn't get in for two months and I was also referred to another neurologist by my primary care doctor but also couldn't get in for two months.Long story short Dr. Grant said come back in gave me neck injections in office and if that didn't work he would work around the medical insurance red tape to get me a brain MRI. Something more was wrong so Dr. Grant made the MRI possible because still no availability at the neurologist. I had a call 20 minutes after my Brain MRI from Dr. Grant and poor Dr. Grant bless his heart never having to do this before in his life because he specializes in a different medical field had to tell me I had to rush myself to the ER or call 911 because he didn't know if I would live. I had a huge brain tumor. Dr. Grant had called the hospital ahead of time to make sure the best neurosurgeon in the country was on my case. Can you believe Dr. Grant did all this for me? WOW!After having brain surgery Dr. Grant still did not leave me. Dr. Grant still continue to take care of me evaluate the scar on my head and give me Physical Therapy for my vestibular schwannoma even though he didn't have to do any of these things and even though he could've just given up on me and said well I gave you the referral I did my part it's up to you. I would have DIED.It's because of Dr. grants efforts and listening to me that I am alive today I am so very thankful! I can't believe I found a Doctor who I can say is actually in my corner who fights for me. BTW, the office staff is nice here however making appointments in dealing with the processes aren't all that great that doesn't matter when you have the best doctor in the world thank you Dr. Grant.

We moved to northern California and I had to get a new pain management provider.  After being turned down by the one close to home, I came across Alice and Dr. Grant.  Alice has changed my life.  She ordered imaging and testing to get to the root of my pain.  They don't just slap a band-aid on with a new or increased dosage.  She works with me on a combination of therapies.  I am more active, I sleep better and I am working with other providers to help my pain.  They want to work with you to have a better life.

Grant is impressed with his own intelligence, exhibiting his superiority by using words that the average person wouldn't know. His own staff admits (off the record) that he has an enormous ego. There's no negotiation with Grant; it's his way or the highway. When challenged he told me that if I didn't like it I could vote with my feet. He sets arbitrary limits on the medication he prescribes. Regardless of medical need, he will say that it was the decision of his practice to set a particular limit. When pressed further he blamed the limit on the CDC. Actually, the CDC limits are a guideline; the physician can prescribe more if he or she wishes. In short, he is arrogant, impatient, unwilling to compromise, prejudiced (not racist) and an all around unpleasant fellow. In modern parlance, he sucks. I wouldn't let him anywhere near anyone I cared about. Just to be fair, he is neat as a pin. To wind up, his staff is quite good, they actually try to correct his faults if they can.

Hello. My experience with Grant & most other staff at his WC facility was a nightmare!!! I transferred from the Chronic pain dept at kaiser. 10yrs of EXCELLENT care from caring, trusting & REAL concerned frim Drs & staff of for quality of life. Grant shows NO concern,care or comfort level, more importantly, NO concern of the quality of your life. I suffered 6 days without pain meds due to his lack of care, ended up in the emergency room a few times. Lost one of my jobs due to it & several days of paid work. My pain is debilitating & life long. If your looking to restore quality of life like Grant advertises, FIND another Dr. Im so unbelievably disappointed & saddened. As a pain patient, life is already difficult. He made mine worthless for a short time. Thank GOD for all the TRUE HONEST caring Drs out there.

This Doctor did / does not deserve such a harsh review it has wrong written allover it psych meds which this poster is admittedly on do not have such interference with the pain medications in the vast majority of cases. I question this persons reviews validity also it is always his or her choice to take the pain medication in the first place and if it were to heavy they should know common sense says to take less or none at all if your pain is not so severe.  Allot of harshness and blame and I do not buy it all as a two year med school studies student before transferring to business and now a pain and phsych (anxiety) patient myself.

Refused to treat me at all in the future after I was "too slow" to wean off a conflicting medication. Only saw me once, then relied on the biased reports of nurse practitioners to make inappropriate decisions about my treatment. Made no efforts to order tests or do anything to figure out why my pain isn't going away. Healthy alternatives to addictive meds were not offered.
