Wasn’t sure what to expect, since it was my first optometry visit. Tampa Eye Institute staff put me at ease, addressed my initial questions immediately. Dr Smurr was really exceptional. Asked questions first to understand my situation, then ran a few simple tests and continued to ask questions. Provided a recommendation that worked well for me, explained in both medical terminology as well as language that was easy for me to understand. I’d recommend Dr Smurr and his staff to my closest family and friends.

The eye exam was very rushed by a technician.I would expect the doctor to do the vision test. I did not need my eyes dilated, as it was done by my eye doctor. Then they proceeded then to take unnecessary photos of my retina. This was also unnecessary (my doctor recently did that also) and insurance did not cover it. They are there to make money regardless of what the patient says. Then I was handed the wrong Rx for contact lenses by the Doctor. His explanation was when you get older you don’t need as strong of a Rx. I will not return.

Due to the upcoming hurricane I was told I would need to reschedule. I immediately called. Interesting thing is I was going to get a later scheduled appointment than patients that were scheduled after me. Poor business practice.

So thorough-picked up my early macular degeneration sooner than anyone, according to the retina specialist. And very easy to talk to, friendly, and so tuned in to what your needs are. Does not hesitate to tell you if there is a problem that needs to be addressed, but does so in a gentle and reassuring way. Have gone to him for about 15 years, and would hate even the thought of going elsewhere.
