List of Douglas E. Carlan's Reviews
I recently moved to Gulfport and needed to get established with a hand surgeon. Dr. Carlan was recommended and I couldn’t be more pleased with office staff and Dr. Carlan extremely personable and up front
Dr. Carlan performed semiemergency surgery on my hand a few years ago and did an amazing job. Dr. Eaton treated my knee and is a gettoit doctor that makes you feel like he genuinely wants you to feel better. Both are possibly the nicest doctors I have ever met. Their staff is equally nice which is probably a reflection of working for the nicest doctors on the planet.
Dr. Carlan and his team were great.
Dr. Carlan came highly recommended by a Coworker and family member who have had successful surgeries by him. Dr. Carlan operated on preexisting joint contractures Ive had on my right hand since 2014. He did a great job and Im pain free post op. His staff in office and at the surgery center were friendly and accommodating.
I saw Dr. Carlan regarding pain I was having in my left shoulder. It was an hour and 15 minutes before the doctor saw me although it did not appear his office was very busy. He ordered an MRI and I made another appointment to discuss the results. When I returned to discuss the MRI results Dr. Carlan told me the disc with the images was not readable and the written report had contradictions and he could not tell me any details of my injury. He suggested that I schedule surgery at that time which could later be cancelled if the MRI results warranted. A couple of days later his office called and said yes the MRI showed I need the surgery. I was never told what tendons were damaged or to what extent and I called Robert and told him I would like to know the details. He scheduled an appointment for me to see Dr. Carlan to actually discuss the details. When I arrived at Dr. Carlans the receptionist asked me for my $40 copay. I told her I had paid my copay the last time I saw Dr. Carlan and was unable to ask any details about my injury and told her I didnt think I should have to pay my copay again just to discuss what I was unable to discuss during my previous visit. She seemed sympathetic and said okay. After waiting 20 minutes she came out and told me Dr. Carlan said he didnt need to discuss anything with me. I told her I had questions about the details of my injuries. She said okay once again. 15 minutes later Dr. Carlans PA Heather called me up to the window and told me if I wanted to discuss details with Dr. Carlan I would have to pay the $40 copay again. When I told her I was not able to discuss details of my injury on my previous visit she told me that was not true they have transcripts and that Dr. Carlan told me what the surgery would involve. Transcripts aside I was never shown images of my injuries the injuries where never discussed in any detail and a detailed explanation of the surgery was never discussed with me. I dont know which tendons full tears or partial tears or to what extent. I asked for my images and cancelled my surgery.
I came to Dr. Carlins office with numbness in my left thumb and pain in my left wrist. He told me I had Carpal Tunnel Wrist Syndrome. My MRI findings showed synovial cyst... spurring... and three loose bodies in the wrist and joint and I asked to have them removed. He would not remove the loose bodies but convinced me that I needed Carpal Tunnel Wrist Surgery his specialty. But he never performed a test to confirm that I had Carpal Tunnel Wrist Syndrome. The day of the surgery I again asked if he could remove the synovial cyst and three loose bodies in my wrist. He again said that Carpal Tunnel Wrist Surgery was what I needed. Now four months later there is no difference in the numbness in my left thumb. However the pain in my left wrist is significantly worse. Maybe Dr. Carlin is the best at Carpal Tunnel Wrist Surgery but that is obviously not what I needed.
Got no details
The way Dr. Carlan treated me today leads me to believe these reviews are fraudulent. 1st I sat in the waiting room for an hour after my scheduled appointment while watching the dr laughing and talking with his staff. Once called back I explained my injury he said “What do you want me to do?” He made me feel like he was not concerned could not wait to get me out of his office like I was a 2nd class patient wasting his time. As I was checking out he dismissed me like I was nobody.
Good care by all.
Dr Carlan repaired my severe rotator cuff tear in April 2016. Almost a year later now I am stronger and more painfree than before the injury. The recovery and physical therapy were sometimes quite painful and went on for nearly 6 months but it was 100% worth it. Dr Carlan his staff and the surgery center exceeded my expectations at every opportunity. Insurance and billing were hassle free too. No regrets

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
