Dr. Johnson is phenomenal
I walked out of the surgery with more pain then I went in with. The pain was so intense afterwards, so he gave me a steroid pack that worked for a day or so. He gave a second steroid pack with the same result. Then he gave me a full dosage for 2 weeks. I was not given any warning about the possible risk I was taking. As a result of the steroids he gave me, I got a condition called Avascular Necrosis which causes the blood to stop flowing to the hip bone and the bone to die. My hips were crumbling and I had to have both completely replaced. I have yet to have another surgeon understand why I was given oral steroids rather than a localized shot. The Primary Care Dr that referred me to him said she would never refer him another patient. I am completely disabled as a result of my treatment by Dr Johnson and can barely walk anymore. I used to be a very busy and active person and now I spend most of my life in bed because the pain is so intense. I have found another surgeon who has had great success with my condition and he believes he can get rid of 85-90% of the pain. Another Dr told me Dr Johnson didn't even operate on the right spot.
I feel so fortunate that I found Dr. Johnson. I had a serious surgery to save me from ending up in a wheelchair basically I am so grateful for this doctor. He did the surgery and was there every step of the way. He visited me in the hospital every day and explained everything to my daughter because she was there with me. He was very patient knowledgeable and professional. His staff was patient and helpful and made me feel like they were there to help me. He took the time to explain everything to me and talk to my daughter on a conference call because they were both from out of state and worried. I was referred to him by my neurologist who doesn’t do surgery and recommended him very highly. If I ever need any kind of surgery neurologically he is my go to guy. I completely trust him. it was scary thinking that I was giving my spinal cord over to somebody that I didn’t know that just one mistake could really messed me up. I’m so thankful for him and if you are looking at any kind of surgery on your spine I highly recommend him.
I was diagnosed with herniated disks in my neck at the C5-6 C6-7 levels by my local clinic and referred to Dr. Johnson at Providence St. Vincent. My first visit Dr. Johnson reviewed my MRI and was immediate with his diagnosis. He told me that I needed surgery, anterior cervical discectomy fusion double level. I was kind of taken back by the doctor’s confidence and arrogance during my consult. He seems very up on himself and you can see that in his personality. He told me in a very confident way that he could fix my problem and pain. I chose instead to try PT but after 6 weeks the pain was unbearable. Surgery scheduled January 2017 was my surgery. Although he took away some of the excruciating pain away, I have never been pain free since the surgery. I had problems from day 1. Every time you call the office you rarely get to talk with the doctor or his asst. you usually have to leave a message. Call backs were the same every time, there reactions were that what I was experiencing is normal and part of the healing process. After months of suffering and my first post op. Dr. Johnson finally ordered x-rays and a MRI. My second post op. with Dr. Johnson was a disappointing experience. So he proceeded to show me before and after MRI images pointing out how much restriction in my neck he had relieved. I get that and there’s no denial there but, explain to me why I’m still in so much pain and getting worse. He looked me and said “ I thought I could help you but don’t think there is anything more he could do for me and literally told me to file for disability and that would be the closest thing to a paycheck that I will ever get again”. Then he politely kicked me to the curb. After suffering for another three months I decided to reach out to a very prestige spine center in the Portland area. The diagnosis to me was that my problems are not because of what Dr. Johnson did do but rather what he didn’t do. Yes, Dr. Johnson was able to relieve some of the nerve pain but hardly all of it or at least enough that a person could live with it. Bottom line is that I require an additional surgery that is quite a bit more extensive and will require a 4 day hospital stay. I’m finally getting the right surgery for my condition. The surgery Dr. Johnson should have preformed. In addition my best Friend had the same surgery with Dr. Johnson only on a single level. I warned him and told him to seek a second opinion only to deaf ears. He is now 8 months post Op. not able to work and is experiencing the same pain as I have. Also while talking with another Friend of mine who I knew has had past back surgeries about my experience he coincidentally has also had surgery with Dr. Johnson only on his lower back. His opinion of Dr. Johnson was much the same as mine and his surgery was also meet with mixed results. I fully understand that in spine care nothing is guaranteed but, Dr. Johnson’s attitude, arrogance, confidence and his ability to perform are sub-par and in my opinion I would not recommend this surgeon to my worst enemy. I’m sure he helps a majority of his patients but in my case a complete failure.
I suffered from leg pain in legs that was so severe I could hardly walk. I was in pain all day, every day. Dr Johnson operated on me on December 5, 2016. From that day forward my leg and back pain were gone. It was like her performed a miracle! I feel like a new man thanks to Dr Johnson. Overall I found the office completely professional in every way. The Front desk staff were very helpful in assisting me through the process. They helped me schedule at the surgery center that accepted my insurance and assisted me in moving up my surgery almost a full month as the pain was becoming unbearable. Nurse Practitioner Carmel very pleasant and totally professional in helping me with necessary medications. Dr Johnson Did a fantastic job of operating on my back while being kind, understanding, and skilled. In short, I highly recommend this office to anyone requiring spine surgery.
Dr. Johnson is very aloof in his behavior and strange when he is in a room with you. He has a very large exam room with his stool in one corner and the patients chair in the opposite. He has had his staff flag patients that he wants to avoid on the computer. While I was waiting for an appointment I could overhear the front desk staff talking about the lady that just checked in and what the flag meant. I could hear them clearly stating the doctor doesn't want to see that patient and they were suppose to discourage her from making appointments. I felt that talking so loudly about another patient when others could hear ( and maybe even the lady ) was very unprofessional. The Doctors behavior sets the tone for the office.
Dr. Johnson and his staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Dr. Johnson is extremely knowledgeable and I would highly recommend him to anyone who needed to see a neurosurgeon. I would rate him one of the best. He assisted me in making a decision about surgery. I appreciated the fact that he admitted it might not help me at this time and to wait until I really needed it due to the recovery rates for improved health. I respect surgeons who are there to work with the patient and not out to make extra money!
Dr. Johnson performed a micro discectomy (at least I think that's what the procedure was called) on me last year. He and his staff were outstanding. I was out of the hospital in two days. I went from incredible pain to feeling pretty darn good in three weeks. He has my highest recommendation.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
