Samuel Szomstein's Online Review Report Card

Dr. Szomstein misdiagnosed my condition (stated I had no inguinal hernia) and prescribed me a medication that worsened my condition. I returned two weeks later and was misdiagnosed again by his resident (again no hernia). I requested ultrasound which confirmed what I was saying all along (I had not 1 but 2 inguinal hernias. Stay away from this doctor.

Dr. Szomstein assured me I had no inguinal hernia with nearly 100% confidence. He prescribed a medicine that was supposed to reduce inflammation and left my mouth with an infection. I saw his resident two weeks later after medicine failed to work and he again said I had no inguinal hernia (Dr. Bora Kahramangil). I requested ultrasound and it confirmed I had not 1 but 2 hernias. Stay away from this doctor.

a) I was told about 2 small incisions for 2 inguinal hernias. I was not told about the VERY PAINFUL entry port for the camera immediately next to the belly button, or that the SHARP PAIN caused by ANY movement/action involving the stomach muscles, including coughing, sneezing, deep breathing, throat clearing, climbing into bed, sitting up in bed, or rolling over in bed, standing for any period of time, or any other similar activity except for sitting still or lying flat on my back, would last for up to 3 weeks. b) Neither was I told that I would be catheterized and should expect some blood in my urine. c) In addition, I was not told that the IV fluids would cause a weight gain of 6.5 lbs and would take a week or more to dissipate. d) Finally, I was under the impression that the hernia "lumps" would disappear, since that is what happened when I had traditional hernia surgery at Columbia Presbyterian in NYC. Instead, they were not retracted, leaving me looking like a transgender person.

Dr Szomstein made me feel comfortable from the minute l met him. He has wonderful bedside manner and is very compassionate. I would definitely recommend anyone to him.

I had inguinal hernia repair surgery with Dr. Szomstein and couldn’t be more pleased with the care he showed, his attention, the professionalism and friendliness of the staff, and the general result of the procedure.

Long wait and little attention in office: I called the office a few days later with urgent, not emergency, matter but no call back. Tried 5 hours later and got voicemail. 7 hours later and in pain, I had to recall. Doc probably cares but too busy to properly attend to you.

Very abrupt attitude. Did not address my concerns. Less than a 3 minute exam. Medical residents saw me first and gave me their diagnosis which was totally contradicted by Dr Szomstein. If you like beautiful marble floors, then go to the Cleveland Clinic. If you want good medical care, go elsewhere.

excellent surgeon

I had a incisional hernia repair in June 2018 with this doctor. He advised that he was going to do a mesh implant prior to surgery. Three months later the hernia was back and I went back to him. He sent me for another CT scan (thousands of dollars) even though my hernia was visible. After the CT scan confirmed it was the same hernia, he admitted that he never put the mesh in the first time. Thanks to this doctor I am going for my second hernia repair and 9th abdominal surgery.
