Hospice Savannah's Online Review Report Card

Hospice Savannah is a home away from home and a sacred place to come to just this side of heaven ~

My mother received Hospice care at home for about 10 months and she was a patient at Hospice House for almost 3 weeks. It is difficult to express how beneficial the services of Hospice were to my mother and my family. Professional care givers coming into the home, management of supplies and medication, support from the music and massage therapy program, visits from the pastor, etc. were extremely helpful services. The ability to contact Hospice Savannah 24/7 regarding any need we may have had was so beneficial. The entire staff was very friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and most importantly compassionate. When my mother required inpatient care, we became even more appreciative of all that Hospice Savannah provided. The facility is well designed with access to outdoor spaces for patients and family. Having skilled nurses and doctors available at all times to guide us through the end of life process provided much peace of mind. We will be eternally grateful to the entire staff of Hospice Savannah for treating my mother with dignity, respect and love.

Was great at 1st, about 2 months into it as my mother worsened, so did her hospice care.- moms leg swelled up 3 times it size, was told to just elevate it.- abscess on arm got worse on antibiotics, after 3 hours of waiting by phone was told to just take her to ER, was now almost 11pm.- asked nurse if she was going to change bandage on wound. Was told it was fine and didn't need to be changed. Had to point on to a "trained professional" that it was not even covering the wound!- had to basically figure out on my own how to try to manage her pain.- left equipment she could no longer use at my house for 3 weeks.- never got the bedside bathroom chair we asked for- basically begged for help over her last weekend home, no one came till Monday. Had to threaten to put mom in hospital or call the health department to get them to take her to Hospice House as she could no longer walk and was on the floor screaming in pain.- Called at 3pm the next day and was told they changed her status from agitated to resident and that it would now cost me $360 per day out of pocket, even though she could no longer walk. Agreed to pay the $360 that night as she couldn't be placed in Nursing Home until the next day.- Called at 10am the next morning and was told that I now owe $720!!- Had to argue with Hospice Social Worker about where mom was going to be placed. Was also told to not call the nursing home I wanted mom to go to and harass them. I called them "1" time that morning and had a very pleasant conversation.- When Hospice of Savannah sent over moms medical history to the new hospice, they blacked out her social security number. When I asked why, they said it was against "hipaa laws".Overall very bad experience. As professionals they should have saw that I was in way over my head. There were some very caring people that I dealt with, but, for the most part, felt like it was all about the money.****RESPONSE *******telephone is fine, you guys have me on file. My mother has passed now by the way, that is less then 2 weeks after you guys said her condition was under control.

If I could give them negative stars I would.To begin, they send different nurses to the house and not one has followed up with the other one or bothered to compare notes. You have to constantly give them medication updates and repeat any issues going on. When someone is dying, please don’t make them go over the medication list over 10 times to 10 different staff members and ask the same questions over and over because no one has taken the time to follow up with each other.We frequently ran out of medication, medication refills were late, we were told medication was called in and it wasn’t, medication was refilled at the wrong pharmacy etc.They did NOT take my family member’s pain seriously. They were too parsimonious with the pain medication. My family member suffered tremendously due to lack of adequate pain relief.Hospice didn’t fulfill any of the promises they made via the initial caseworker. I felt no one really cared. No one went out of their way to do anything above the minimum. In the end, she was just a number, another passing patient. I’m sure Hospice will write an overly earnest response to this review. DON’T. I have had enough of you. You are liars. You failed us.

The staff here took exceptional care of my Mother. The nurses and Doctors were thorough and helped to make my mom comfortable. Special thanks goes out to Nancy, CNA who’s infectious, positive energy made us smile in an otherwise difficult situation. The spa baths really were a special treat as well. Thank you so much to this wonderful, caring place.

They did everything for my Mom when she got sick to keep her in her home. The care they took was incredible. I have to give a very special thanks to nurse Gwen Robinson. She was incredible and answered all my questions and kept me up on all that was going on.

I love everything about this place BUT dorthy the staff nurse is flat out nasty and rude don't trust her

Hospice Savannah is the only not-for-profit hospice in Savannah. They not only care for your loved ones as they are dying but they provide a host of other programs and services not provided by other Hospices e.g., grief counseling, palliative care, music therapy, yoga, story telling and a number of others. As a volunteer and a board member, with every passing day I grow to admire them more and more. They are a priceless gift in this community.
