I never write reviews, ever. But my experience was so stressful and upsetting i really feel the need to. I have been going to the OBGYN clinic here for a few years, and everything was fine until the past month. I had nexplanon for 5 years and when it came time to switch it out I did it at this clinic. I started to have a pretty bad allergic reaction to it surprisingly enough (breaking out in hives, extremely uncomfortable in the downstairs region, etc.) Because I had hives on the site of the nexplanon and on the sides of my neck they told me to go to the ER. the staff at the ER were very helpful and made sure to give me medicine and told me I had to have the same dr that put it in take it out for me. So I was taking allergy medicine and a steroid to help with the hives/pain at the nexplanon site, and waited for my appointment date. I showed up and they said they could not take it out due to it being a post er visit instead of a procedure visit, makes sense although I thought that was the service I asked for. During this appointment they seemed very unconcerned that this was happening and said it was most likely something else. Nothing else had changed, not my diet, not a new soap or detergent, and the hives would be directly along the line of the nexplanon. I told them I just wanted it out, because it was so incredibly uncomfortable. Very much a burning and itching sensation all around the nexplanon. Just kept asking me about a shellfish allergy or if I switched my soap…. Nothing is different. I would have put two and two together if I had also happened to try lobster for the first time and broke out in hives. So, I made a new appointment to have it taken out and continued to take the allergy medicine and the steroid they gave me. Still having bumps on the site and I even had a bump that looked more like a blister than hives directly on the nexplanon. I waited the two weeks from the original ER visit to have it taken out. I showed up to the appointment and they asked me why i wanted it out, idk if the doctors just don’t communicate with one another or why there isn’t a record that I was in the ER and have been having this pretty severe reaction to it, but the dr I met with was unaware of the situation, so I explained again that I just want it out. They did not numb me enough at first and I felt the incision. They numbed me again to proceed. But that was an extremely frustrating process and the ER doctors seemed to care, but the OB’s I spoke to did not seem concerned. Even though I was explaining that I was so uncomfortable and itchy. I have never reacted to anything let alone a medicine like that. It was extremely frustrating that they just had me take allergy medicine to help with the hives for TWO weeks before being able to take it out. I’m not sure if they don’t communicate with one another or what but I had to reiterate the problem quite a few times, and felt as though I was being talked to like I didn’t know what I was saying. Thought I would share my experience, and I will be finding a new OBGYN clinic for the future.

A good friend recently went to this ER, & requested I leave a review on her behalf. Her main complaints were the excessively long wait time, & poor bedside manner of the nurse, & physician. She was ultimately able to be stitched up, & discharged. She commented that the quality of care has greatly deteriorated throughout the years. This used to be a really good hospital. I, like many others from Honolulu/Oahu, was born here. My mother worked at Kapiolani for over 10 years, & had to use the ER a few times. Once, for an Acute Appendicitis. Issue was caught in time, & she was fine after an emergency appendectomy. Maybe it was a bad day for the Emergency Department? However, my friend is adamant that she will seek care elsewhere, should the need arise in the future.

Watch out for the "Nurse Mafia" here. At all question what they are doing and they will threaten you with being removed from the building and not able to see your baby. The hospital uses babies as ATMs because they know we have no other options on the islands. I think if I were to have another baby I would plan the birth on the mainland somewhere to avoid this place.

My experience at Kapiolani Medical Center was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and events. While I wish I could give them a full 5-star rating, I believe a 4-star review is more appropriate. Upon arriving at the hospital with severe stomach pain, I was initially greeted with attentive care by the hospitalist staff. However, after their assessment concluded there was no need to offer me pain medication or admit me, one nurse with neon yellow pants rudely rushed me out and left me half-dressed with no shoes on a bench outside in the middle of the night while I waited for an Uber. A couple of days later, as my pain worsened, I received a missed phone call in the middle of the night informing me to return to the hospital immediately due to alarming blood test results. The next day, I discovered the voicemail and promptly returned their call, only to learn that I had a staph infection in my blood and needed to rush back to the ER. Upon my return, I was quickly admitted into the only available room—a spacious Covid isolation room—featuring a large screen TV and an excellent sound system. I was grateful for the comfortable accommodations and the swift attention. Dr. Nguyen, the physician assigned to me, was remarkable. She truly listened to my concerns and treated me with respect and compassion—a stark contrast to the few nurses who were less considerate and shall remain unnamed. I firmly believe that no patient should be judged or treated poorly based on what's written in their medical records, and Dr. Nguyen and the excellent nurses—Melissa, Ally, Amanda, Kimberly,, Rick and Emma—epitomized this belief by providing non-judgmental, compassionate care. In the end, my experience at Kapiolani Medical Center was defined by the incredible care and dedication of the majority of its staff, who worked tirelessly to ensure I was comfortable and well-informed throughout my stay. For that, I'm grateful and extend my warmest Mahalo.

I received excellent service from Kelly and the entire Physiatry Department team. They went above and beyond to make sure my special needs son got the medical care he needed. I really appreciate all of their hard work !

Why is Kapiolani Medical Center still requiring masks in certain departments like outpatient auxiliaries such as Imaging or Peds Ambulatory Unit? My kid's Dr only sent my kid here to get an Xray done..WTH? Fricking ILLEGAL!

I wish I didnt have to see these doctors for my high risk pregnancy but unfortunately had too. Worst birthing experience. Had to come in for an emergency c-section to deliever my son. On the 2nd day of being there (still loopy from being on magnesium) I felt forced into getting a implanon. I was by myself (no other family etc.) and felt extremely pressured as doctors/student doctor were present in my room discussing it. Being by myself and in a bad situation (personal life) i felt extremely taken advantage of. The doctors knew of personal issues i was going thru to at the time (death of parents, bad housing situation etc. Even briefly listed in medical record). Now the implanon is causing my already exsisting hypertension to rise due to the effects of hormonal birth control. (They did not mention that either when describing the birth control). Now i cant get any doctor or nurse practioner to remove the implanon because they are worried about my blood pressure which is being elevated by that implanon. Shame on you doctors for consistently pushing and pressuring me during one of the Hardest times of my life. Sending in a doctor consecutive days after a c-section, pain pills, and magnesium is HORRIBLE! The Doctors wven knew i was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety too! Also with all the pills they were prescribing me my PCP (6 monthd later) and Longs Pharmacist (during pregnancy)who also had to alert me the effects of the medication i was taking was COUNTERACTING eachoher. Horrible, horrible experience. The only plus side here was the NICU nurse I had.
