Sugiki Portis Eye Center's Online Review Report Card

My eye doctor of many years retired. I went searching for a new eye doctor and discovered Sugiki Portis Yim Eye specialists. Specifically Dr Yim. His background and training said a lot about his ability and talent. But going to see him was a great validation that my eye care was in his very capable hands. I am very happy to have found him! I highly recommend Dr Yim. But having gone there, all the doctors have very loyal customers. The satisfied comments I hear from those I've talked to are really great. I'm happy I found this group!

My wife and I have been seeing Dr. Portis for over 20 years and have always been impressed and very happy with our care. He performed my wife's LASIK with great results, and he just replaced my cataracts with Toric lenses and the Femtosecond laser, with fantastic results. I was more terrified than the average person I suppose and ready to travel ANYWHERE to have cataract surgery if it meant lessening the risk of complications, though some of the people around him (and other MD's) convinced me he'd be a great choice. But mostly it was my appraisal of him: cautious, ethical, conscientious, and very smart--which won me over. He was also willing to take a lot of time to explain the different options and the procedure, as well as fully appraising my eyes. I wanted to go to someone with experience and who does a fair number of cataract surgeries too--not a factory, but enough to be really good at it, which is what I felt most comfortable with. But still, even though it's a low-risk proposition, it's still scary! Highly recommend. (His assistants are all great as well.)

Horrible staff. They double bill for services/goods and have the worst attitude. Instead of helping people, this woman sat and bad mouthed customers while chatting to her friend about her daughter in law's visit and a trip to New York. She said all kinds of nasty things how she hates the customers.

Excellent service and very efficient! Even during a pandemic they seem to have a great process down for serving a number of patients efficiently so that the waiting room doesn’t get backed up or crowded.

I went and saw Dr. Portis recently for LASIK. I had terrible vision. My left was -10 and my right was -9.50. I had both Myopia and Astigmatism in both eyes. Basically, I couldn’t function at all without glasses or contacts because my prescription was so high. I had gone to other doctors who saw my prescription and automatically disqualified me but I was told that Dr. Portis likes a challenge and would still do a full exam to see if there was any opportunity to help me. He did just that. He did a very detailed exam and I was a candidate for LASIK. From beginning to end, Dr. Portis and his staff were wonderful and eased my anxieties. I’ve waited what seems my entire life to be able to get this surgery and I finally was able to. Dr. Portis explained the surgery and what to expect from start to finish. The surgery was painless and surprisingly fast. I was scared, with reason since it’s my eye but everyone reassured me the entire time. Recovery was easy. I went right back to my normal life in a day. It’s been a week since my surgery and I’m seeing 20/20 on my left and 20/25 on my right. There are no words that can adequately express my appreciation. My life has forever changed for the better.

I had Lasik surgery twenty years ago, but my vision in recent years had become increasingly farsighted with early stage cataracts, not eligible for insurance reembursement for cataract surgery and additional Lasik surgery being problematic. In consultation with Dr. Portis, we decided to undergo refractive surgery, essentially similar to cataract surgery with lens replacement. My vision is now completely restored, and I am very happy with all aspects of my medical treatment from Dr. Portis and his medical support staff. Dr. Portis talked clearly and openly about all aspects of my surgery, answering all questions and describing his thinking process behind his recommendations. I felt no pressure to do the surgery or follow any other recommendation, but I was provided all necessary information to make an informed decision. Surgery and followup were all carried out professionally and competently, and the results are perfect, in my happy opinion. I could not be more satisfied with my experience with Dr. Portis and the results of my surgery.

I had been wearing glasses since I was in Kindergarten and I really wanted to get Lasik eye surgery. I was very hesitant because of the fear of what could go wrong. Many friends and colleagues kept encouraging me to do it. It took my boss, who is a surgeon, to finally convince me that it was safe and worth at least a consultation. He recommended Dr. Portis because he is very meticulous and will check your eyes to make sure you are a candidate for the surgery. I am 4 months post-surgery and have 20/20 vision in both eyes. I can wake up, open my eyes and see clearly. I am so glad I was able to muster up the courage to go through with the surgery. Best decision ever!

Came here in search of an eye exam that was a decade over due. I decided on Sugiki Portis based on the location of my home and being able to be seen within 2 weeks before an excursion. Made a morning appointment and got mixed up with the location. Went to POB 2 instead of POB 1, so don't make the same mistake I did. Luckily, I was on foot and just had to walk over. Located in Queens POB 1, on the 7th floor, at first glance when you walk into the office you'll notice all these lively photos on the walls, all throughout the office. Ahead is the receptionist counter on the right and where you sign in. The office has 2 waiting rooms, 1 right behind the reception and another down the hall left from reception. Make sure to know which waiting room they want you to wait in. Also, straight ahead from the reception is an optician office, where you can conveniently fill your prescription. After checking in, filing out forms, and waiting about less than 5 mins, I was taken in to do a pre-exam. Staff member was very friendly and made me feel very comfortable, even though I was very worried from the start. Next, was lead to the second waiting room and waited less than 5 mins here. Was brought into Dr. Kuba's room and she started my eye exam. She's a very good listener, and made me feel at ease right away. As I thought, I was getting older, and having her confirm that was actually a relief. She told me that I was getting me eyes dilated that day and would take up to 30 mins to take effect. In the meantime, I looked around the optician office and made an order. Then, made my way to the 2nd waiting room, where I was called upon by Dr. Portis. He is actually the photographer of all the neat photos all over the office, and they are very impressive. Chatted with the Dr.Portis about his adventures and all his photos, and learned he is a well traveled person. We then started the conclusion of my eye exam, and Dr. Portis deemed me okay till the next visit. Feeling quite relieved I came out with no major problems, and thanked everyone on my way out. Alas, I have already scheduled my next year's appointment, and hope things will stay status quo! Till next year, Mahalo to the crew at Sugiki Portis, Grind On! Pau!

On 02-19-2019 I went to Sugiki - Portis Eye Center to select new eyeglass lenses. The front desk personnel were very helpful and courteous. I only waited 5 minutes to see Optician Debby Souza. Debby explained the type of lenses and frames. She was so helpful and the lenses I selected were perfect. She made it seem easy. These are the best lenses I ever purchased at Sugiki-Portis Eye Center. This was the best experience I've had selecting and purchasing prescription eyeglasses! Thank You Optician Debby Souza!

Almost 2 weeks post Lasik with Dr. Portis and I could not be happier! So grateful for the referral and that I fought past my fear to get it done. Everyone was right...it really is life changing. The blues are blue-er and the greens are greener! No more glasses, no more contacts thanks to Dr. Portis and his precision in getting my vision just right!
