Non-caring demeanor. Didn’t seem to see me as a person. Would not trust him to do any type of surgery on me.
After a mountain biking accident I ended up having broken ribs with a punctured lung and broken collarbone bone which almost came out of the skin. While I was at the hospital for 4 days he didn’t even come to see the injury, just phone conversations with the trauma doctor. Once I was out of the hospital I went to see him in his practice. He told me the bone might heal on its own and wait for 6 weeks and sent me back home. I think he had no idea how to operate on a such a badly broken collarbone. I went to see a another doctor in Honolulu and got the surgery done as fast as possible. The surgeon in Honolulu almost laughed at the thought of this collarbone properly healing on its own. Don’t waste your time, go and see someone with competence.
I understand the shortage of physicians on Maui. We are grateful to have who we have - but- My surgery was canceled due to a lack of research on the doctors part on where I was to have my surgery. Was booked at Kahului surgical center- they don’t do knee replacement the day the doctors office booked. I was told “ things happen”. Meanwhile I can’t walk without pain and need to wait 6 more weeks. Boo hoo Details are important- especially when performing surgery. Go somewhere else!
He was great! Had a compound fractured of my wrist, he explained possible outcomes. Felt confident with his track record and skills. Living proof of excellent experience and healing. Dr. Berney is the best!
went to ER for comminuted fracture of my wrist. Berney viewed my X-rays remotely, told ER doctor to splint it, and come see him in two weeks. Day before my appointment his office staff called to cancel (said he was on vacation)and refused to give a referral even though I asked for one. I was in exquisite pain and was distressed. My pcp finally got me an appointment on Oahu(it was Christmas holiday and couldn't find anyone on Maui to see me)with a wrist and hand orthopedist but wasn't until 3 1/2 weeks after break. Dr. on Oahu did X-ray and break was 30 degrees off alignment. came back to Oahu two days later for surgery. After 6 months of physical therapy I still have limited range of motion due to not getting proper treatment to begin with and having to be immobilized for so long. I have contractures in my fingers and can not bend my hand back very far. I have heard of other people who have had bad experience with Berney. I do not recommend him for anything.
My older mother (76) had her hip replaced early this week. It wasn't an easy decision as with the Covid protocols, she was taken by an ambulance, and we couldn't see her or never got to meet the doctors or discuss our options, and we couldn't find much online either. Before the operation began, the doctor and anesthesiologist called us to explaind the procedure and brought peace to the family. You could hear the voice of experienced professionals and with much care. About 1 hour later, we received Dr. Berney's and Dr. Hagebak's call, they send us a picture of my mom with the biggest smile, and 3 days later, she was already taking her first steps. Thank you!!!
Dr. Berney took absolutely no time with me when discussing possible carpal tunnel surgery or other options like injections. I asked him about possible exercises I could do to continue strength training with carpal tunnel, I asked about stretches that might be helpful and got nothing both times. I asked about my current wrist brace and inquired about other options and was met with silence. After speaking with better practitioners, it turns out that I will indeed need surgery. However, there is no way I’d let this disinterested doctor operate on me. I’m more disappointed than anything.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
