Dr. Dettwiler and staff did a good job for my procedure. I would go to Dr. Dettwiler for the procedure again. It is scary to be put to sleep during a procedure and they did a good job of explaining the positives and negatives of the procedure.

The experience at Dr. Dettwiler's office was very good. I would go there again when it is time for another procedure.

The nurses on staff were mostly lovely, friendly, and gentle, but Dr. Dettwiler was impatient, pompous, and unwilling to listen to my concerns. One of the nurses in the operating room had her mask below her nose and wasn't paying attention, so when the anesthesiologist told me to "bite down on the mouthpiece" as I was going under, I didn't have anything to bite. I had to repeat myself twice, groggy with anesthesia, before the nurse snapped out of it and inserted the mouthpiece into my mouth. I also developed a bacterial infection in my throat a few days after the procedure. Again, most of the staff was so sweet and kind, but that was nowhere near enough to make up for how awful the experience was.

What can you say about having a colonoscopy? That it was great? Over rated,but if you've the need that's where they send you.

My medical issues were not resolved by this clinic. At the time of my appointment, I was suffering from extreme anxiety due to a medication working improperly. I was scheduled to do a scope. This in itself is not a bad thing at all - a scope, though expensive, is a precautionary diagnostic tool. Due to my anxiety issues at that time, I was told that, in my case, I would be given a sedative right away, after paperwork, to go along with my prescribed medication. No extreme anxiety, no problem. This would make my going through with the procedure an easy deal. Instead, when I arrived on time, and when I asked about the sedative, I was told that they don't give sedatives out before a procedure. I asked if I could see a nurse and ask one of them about it, but I was told the nurses were all busy at the moment (and when I asked about Dr. Dettwiler himself, I was informed that I wouldn't meet him at all that day unless they found something bad; I didn't figure I'd get to ask him about the sedative, but it doesn't hurt to try). To be honest, this information seemed wrong - I've never heard of a surgeon who doesn't meet with a patient before a procedure unless its an emergency case. However, I decided to give the clinic the benefit of the doubt, because an M.D.'s surgical/procedure schedule is one of the most important aspects of a practice, financially and otherwise. Maybe I, the patient, misunderstood. A great nurse led me back to prep - she was a credit to the clinic. However, by that time, my anxiety had built to the point of having a panic attack. It is an unfortunate side effect of extreme anxiety, but one I can't help. When the nurse figured out what was going on (and that I was supposed to have been sedated a half an hour earlier - which she said is something that the clinic does indeed do for patients such as myself), she offered to have sedatives administered intravenously, but by then, I was in panic mode and could not go through with the procedure. After a few hours had passed at home, I calmed down, and was able to call the clinic to cancel my follow-up and schedule another appointment with the nurse to see if there were other options (like a barium swallow) or to see if the error in communication could be addressed. When I gave my identifying information over the phone and asked to cancel, the administrative assistant I was talking to said, "Fine, cancelled." and then hung up on me. I didn't even get a chance to ask to reschedule! I sat in my chair, looking at my phone in disbelief. I've worked in the medical field while in the military and as a civilian; I'm a ophthalmic surgical assistant, but I worked my way up to that position. I've worked in admitting, scheduling, billing - I have never, in over ten years of working in a specialty clinic, felt the need to hang up on a patient. I have had patients treat me poorly over the phone, so I know better than to abuse clinical staff verbally - I did nothing to warrant that treatment. I couldn't believe that it happened; I still can't believe it now. But it is as my grandfather, who was a surgeon at the mayo clinic, used to say: It isn't what you do to a patient that matters so much as the way you make a patient feel - if you make them feel as though they are being looked after, they will remember that and wish to return to your practice. So, poor communication coupled with being hung up on (by a private practice, no less), decided it: I looked elsewhere for care.
