Banyan Treatment Centers - Chicago's Online Review Report Card

This is a privately owned center that maintains the lowest standard of care & housing for the sake of profit. Patients are a very distant second. Or third. Or forth. The techs in housing are lazy, racist and jaded. Not to mention more than a few of them are actively using. The housing is depressing. They cram 3-4 women in a tiny apartment while they are detoxing with minimal supervision and supply you with ZERO amenities. Unless you consider roach hotels an extravagance. The cheap singly towels small like cigarettes. A no-tell hotel would be classier. The kitchens are 50 years old. But not at all kitsch. Just ick. And the women cook and leave dishes and food everywhere. And the competing smells from other inmates culinary adventures permeate the entire complex with such pungent assaults on your senses you will wish you went to prison instead. Everything here is broken, grey, depressing and dishonest. Don't walk. Run.

I was always taught that if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all. However more recent social movements have proved to me that being silent is far worse. I'll start with Positives: Partnership  with a yoga center. They allow patients to go there for free classes 1x every other week. Kudos to the woman who owns the studio; giving away her time for free. They should do more of that (partnerships with relevant local businesses).  Partners with a health club. But logistics were a struggle; had to wait an hour on several occasions while the housing "techs" went out to buy cigarettes, painted their nails, etcThere are a FEW passionate employees with Banyan for whom I have the utmost respect. The location is premium - in the downtown area of Naperville. Banyan is a privately owned center and not a non-for profit which makes a big difference in their priorities. It's all about the external appearance that they create. Which I found to be very misleading. I do not feel this place helps patients heal. In fact I would say most of the people in my cohort left feeling more traumatized. That was also my personal experience. Here are a few of the experiences and impressions I left the center with. And I share this not with malicious intent but in hopes the center will take this to heart and make much needed changes. 1. Unhealthy housing situation. They assigned 3 to 4 women to very small apartments which creates an environment rifle for conflict. There are cigarette butts littered all over the property. The apartments smell like smoke & have roach traps in the kitchen. Apartments are depressing like a budget hotel- only less welcoming. Please brighten up the space with a coat of soothing blue or green paint comfortable mattresses and a few throw pillows. I gave the director countless ideas of how they can make the space feel more welcoming and more like a home. All very low cost suggestions were offered. They do not enforce the housing policies consistently. Some of the apartments that I walked into had food all over the kitchen dishes stacked in the sinks and created a very tumultuous environment also not good for recovery and healing. I could expand on this but I think you get the picture. 2. Problem With Unsupervised & Unqualified "Techs" in housingSeveral of the techs were clearly not lucid. I asked the Director if they do random drug testing on these employees- and I didn't get a clear answer. Some of them are in recover themselves (which I applaud) but some of them are going through relapses. I had one woman drive me to a narcotics anonymous meeting many miles away from the center late at night. A narcotics anonymous meeting is completely irrelevant to me. But it was where she wanted to be. She quickly accepted a three-year chip. But I know in fact that she's not clean. It was clear to me that there were drug deals going on in the parking lot. And one man who is in withdrawal in a very agitated state left the room and came back with what appeared to be a concealed weapon. The meeting was quickly adjourned. I'm grateful I got out of there unharmed. I relayed this incident to many people at the center and absolutely no corrective action was taken. It was clear to me that some of the patients had privileges based on their relationship with the housing techs. One woman was taken off site to go buy perfume. Why?3. Hostile Environment in Group TherapyIt's unrealistic to expect that you can put a large group  of recovering addicts together and expect everyone. That said group members would lash out at one another. There was hazing and bullying. Because I'm white and professional - that earned me the label: "BIG TIME"... I was accused of racism, planting drugs, stealing, using drugs. 4. Financial scamsOn day 5- was told that they were out of network & it would be 100% out of pocket. No one gave me a clear estimate; other patients told me I could expect $12-$35k. I just received a significant bill. My experience here was traumatizing. Avoid this place at all cost.  They are profiting off pain. For whom ever reads this I hope you take my advice and I wish you great strength on your road to recovery. I did one month impatient. Also I did one month out patient.. I honestly only did it to lessen criminal charges when i caught a case but.. I ended up making tons of friends and learning a ton about addiction.. Very well run place they are very strict and this is a business at the end of the day but the staff truly cares.

Banyan helped me in so many way's!!! Gave me my Life back!! And the tools to use in tough situations when they are needed. Everyone at Banyan, from Clinical, Nursing, to Housing were the most Wonderful and Professional people. I had a great experience at Banyan in Naperville the staff are awesome there and housing is good we can cook and eat whatever we want which is nice it helped me be accountable and clean up after myself they encourage us to go to meetings and provide a list of meetings and sponsors but don’t force anyone to go which is nice it’s a choice but if you want recovery you will get it no matter where you go you just have to be 100% done with the drugs or drinks

Can’t say enough about Banyan Heartland. From the therapists, medical, administrative staff to the techs. From top to bottom everyone seemed to sincerely care about my recovery. Have to give a huge shout out to Ms. Ortiz of the Alumni Association. Time and time again she has reached out to check on my recovery as well as the recovery of the many friends I’ve gained during my stay. Thank you Felicia!

I've been to Banyan Texas and Banyan in Cathedral City, CA. Those two places changed my life and gave me a support system as well as an understanding that I am not alone. If I could wish for anything, it would be to have never left. When I arrived in Naperville, I was back in my home state. I thought I'd get the support I needed here, I was sorely mistaken. I was recommended to step down earlier than expected by both Texas and Cali. This was because I was doing so well there. Mind you, these nurses/therapists/doctors and technicians monitored us basically non stop. However, not even two weeks of being In Naperville they suggested I go back to square one. Excuse me.. what??? I was not aware of the program going into it. I was completely in the dark with what IOP looked like there. I was under the impression that there were a few different "shift IOP" options. There was only one option and I was the only female in that program that also stayed at the housing unit. I did this by choice because I know myself. I know if I went home I wouldn't start my day till 3pm if I didn't have anything to get up for. With residential and PHP at the other locations, wake up time was at 7:00am and we had programming to give us a head start on the day. So when I didn't have anything to get up for, I slept in. I missed my medication because I struggle with Narcolepsy which they were well aware of. The techs did try at times, but it is difficult for them to help me if it's difficult for anyone to help me with that. I needed continual structure and this place will not provide you with that. The PHP girls were kept at separate quarters and had programming till 3:00pm and I would leave at 6:00. It wasn't until my last week I was there did I have that sense of community. I do not recommend going to this location. I love banyan. Illinois healthcare sucks point blank. I also want to note that there were specific individuals that really do care, and try the best that they can.
