This man threatened me with CPS in order to get me to "consent" under duress to an entirely optional SCREENING test for my newborn just hours after she was born. I had already filled out a religious exemption form (that the state recognizes). He proceeded to tell me that religious exemptions do not exist, and then informed me that if I did not consent, he would report me to Social Services. This is such an appalling way to treat a newly postpartum mother. I developed severe postpartum insomnia for an entire week after the incident because I was terrified that my baby was going to be taken away from me. A nurse apologized to me afterward regarding his treatment of me and informed me that they had no reason to suspect that I was unfit to parent, so the CPS threat was entirely uncalled for. Know your legal rights before seeing this physician.
