My son was referred to Dr. Black by his pediatrician after an abnormal basic eye screening was conducted at his 1 year well check up. It was found he had different sized pupils and was sent for a full eye exam. Check-in went well despite his front desk being overwhelmed with how busy they were. My son and I were called back for a basic screening and to have his eyes dilated. The nurse that assisted us was absolute wonderful with him, and her overall demeaner was exactly what you'd expect and want someone to have who works with child. They let us know that it'd take about 30 minutes for his eyes to dilate which was no problem and expected. After spending an hour and a half waiting to be called back for his eye exam we then spent an additional amount of time waiting for Dr. Black in which I finally opened the exam door and stood in the doorway waiting as it seemed we were forgotten. Dr. Black spent a total of 3 minutes examining his eyes before telling me he would be referring us onto a pediatric oncologist for further testing as different sized pupils could indicate neuroblastoma. From there he was unable to provide any follow up information as to what that could mean, what type of testing an oncologist would be providing and what the process would look like from there. When asked if his office would be contacting children's hospital or if this would be sent to his pediatrician or if I needed to handle it, he had no idea and could provide no answer whatsoever. You can imagine my fear and frustration after being told my 1 year old was being referred to an oncologist and he could provide no insight or comfort to the matter at hand, I was simply told it could be nothing or it could be cancer in a very poor bed-side manner. After spending over 2 hours in his office, receiving horrifying news and no help, I called my son's pediatrician who immediately went to work and was able to get us in with an oncologist within 2 days. After meeting with the oncologist he was horrified to learn that Dr. Black would immediately rush to extreme testing such as a CT scan and MRI and exposing him to radiation from the machines without suggesting additional testing beforehand. The pediatric oncologist was extremely reassuring that such extreme measures shouldn't be taken in a very healthy presenting child and has sense recommended us to another pediatric ophthalmologist in New Orleans. Sadly it was learned Dr. Black is the only option for a pediatric ophthalmologist in Baton Rouge and the next closest is New Orleans, however a small commute for a second opinion is no issue at all when it comes to the proper care and evaluation of a child. Dr. Black in total spent less than 5 minutes with my child in the entirety of the 2+ hours we were there and somehow jumped to the immediate conclusion, my child needed to see a pediatric oncologist. Needless to say due to horrible bed side manner and overall traumatizing experience, we will never, ever return to his office after meeting with other medical professionals. I do want it to be known though, his nurse was truly spectacular and the only positive experience we had during our appointment.

We have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Black and his staff. He is extremely well trained, good with children and we've always had good service/communication from his staff. 5 Stars!
ZERO STARS! My 3 month old was diagnosed with cataracts, a surgery that is a fairly urgent matter in his situation. I was referred to Dr. Black from a few people, all based off of his uncle, Bradley Black MD. Dr. Bradley even handled surgeries for my family in the past as the cataracts are congenital and run in our family. When I called to get an appointment the staff was rude, unprofessional. They were not helpful whatsoever and refused to take my son as a patient because his diagnosis came from another Dr. that doesn't even specialize in pediatrics. I had taken him to my eye dr. because at first I was unsure of who to go to but I could see the cataracts. Ridiculous reasoning. Do not recommend and if you are referred based on other's experience with Dr. Bradley you will NOT get the same experience. Sad that he is one of few in the state practicing pediatrics.
Dr black and his staff are unprofessional. We were sent there when our autistic 5yrold son had something embedded in his eye. He expected us to hold him down while he SCRAPPED his eye. As an adult i would not allow that on myself!! Then said if we went to childrens, they would call him anyway and he would still refuse surgery. We went else where and had no problem getting the surgery he needed. Do not come here!!!
Dr Black is amazing . And so is his assistant Kelly.
Front desk staff is so rude, we missed an appointment and they called me 45 mins after missed appointment to see if I could bring my son right then and there and I told them I had my 3 year old and they said oh Nevermind we don’t allow other kids that aren’t patients! Then couldn’t reschedule us! We will never go back to them! I would 100% not recommend this place!
Rude and lack of respect for people. Missed one appointment due to my father being sick in the hospital now we can no longer go back! Would NEVER recommend this office!!!
Dr. Black and his officer personnel were so kind. His nurse especially gave that extra caring touch. He is thorough, patient, explains things, and takes his time with his patient. He performed surgery on my son to help correct his eyes crossing. He was amazing. I traveled from over an hour away just to see him and he did not disappoint. Highly recommended.
Truly the best...Period!

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
