Only gets 1 star because I can't give zero..Dr. Alvarez is always late, refused to write refferal for Gastro, just said go to ER ( that would be a waste of tjme) changed doctors, Gastro found polyp on my vocal cord.... I would not let her touch me if I was dying...
Dr. Alvarez is very thorough, and kind. She takes her time with you. She is my new General Physician and I am very happy!
I went for what was my annual check up. I’ve been having trouble with chest discomfort and heart palpitation. I visited the ER at another facility a few months prior and was found to have frequent PVC. I was given instruction to help with the condition but it was getting worse. So I’m here for my check up with Dr. Alvarez, after waiting over an hour she enters the room aggitated, slamming things down. She says thanks for waiting in an unpleasant tone. I asked if I should reschedule and she starred at me in disgust. She proceeded to tell me the hold up by revealing personal information about the previous patient, so I stopped her by saying ok , I understand. She took my blood pressure while at this point she was abrupt and cold. She ask.. so what can I help you with? I explained to her about the previous ER visit for the chest discomfort etc. Her back was towards me.. so she turns around and yells. YOU PATIENTS COME WITH TOO MUCH!! I was taken back by that response. It was unprofessional and showed no compassion. She TOLD me to come set closer to finish telling her my concern. While I was doing so she kept cutting me off by putting her hand up. She was writing this down and blowing her breath. She then tell me she can’t set up an appointment with a cardiologist because it would take to long and that she doesn’t have a holter monitor and if I feel this again to go back to the ER. I was sacred that I was leaving another health care facility with no solution. I began to cry asking her what can you do. I explained to her I feel short of breath and that my sometimes I feel my heart might stop. She gets up and tell me to deal with it and that she has other patients to see. So I decided to get up and leave. She follows me and tell me THAN LEAVE YOU ARE TRASH ANYWAY! I said that I’m trash because I’m coming to you about a medical concern of mine. She said yes. I went into the patient area very upset. Other patient noticed the commotion but not the details, as I was explaining to them what she put me through she forcefully pushed me multiple times calling me trash. I finally left. No one understood the fear, neglect, humiliation and now abuse I had experienced. I went downstairs to cool off. I called East Jefferson hospital to file a complaint and was told the this facility doesn’t manage Sonia Alverez but I knew that she is affiliated with this facility. Meanwhile, I see two police vehicles arrive. Shortly after my husband came to pick me up, I filled him in on the encounter. We went back up to ask for a refund for my copay. I found that Alverez called the police on me!! When she was the one that verbally and physically assaulted me. I posed no threat to her. My back was to her while she was pushing me! We were refunded our money by the receptionist. We see Alverez and police officers come out of her office. They reassure her that they’ll tell me not to return. I tell them she pushed me out of the door and called me trash... it was ignored. She then yells, get them out of here you see they are trash!! AGAIN in front of the officers. We leave file a complaint with the officers. I’m here untreated, undiagnosed with no solution for what I depended on a medical professional for. Im not sure how far this will go but I hope that there isn’t any patient that will ever experience this from Sonia Alvarez!

Very Nice Lady, Straight forward
You may have to wait a while, but that is because she doesn't rush her patient's out. I don't mind the wait because I know she will give me the time I need.

Dr. Alvarez was very professional. Although she was pushy about getting into things that did not pertain to the reason I was there. She did all the talking and did not allow me to speak at all. Overall it was a giant waste of time as she used the entire visit to talk about herself and some psychology theories. The best is that on the report she billed me separately for this "advice" and my insurance said this was not covered. Overall, I felt scammed and a little taken advantage of.

I recently moved to Metairie and was looking for a primary physician who accepted UnitedHealthCare. I found Dr. Alvarez online and decided to leave a review for those who are doing the same. Dr. Alvarez does a great job with making her patients feel comfortable, diagnosing the problem and ruling out all possibilities. She even goes as far as using herself as an example. I appreciate her because she is funny, down to earth, and cares about her patients well-being. She will get to the root of the problem no matter what! Her receptionist and nurse are great as well. The two complaint I have is that her office hours are very limited so it is impossible to get an early morning appointment or an evening appointment. So you have to inturrupt your work day in order to see her. And they do not accept debit or credit cards. Only cash or money order. However, I would still recommend her to anyone!
