Carl T Talmo's Online Review Report Card

I am a very analytical person and when it came time to pick an orthopedic surgeon to replace my right hip, I did months of extensive research and phone interviews with people that had the same type of surgery in Boston. At some point with encouragement from the people with whom I spoke, I decided to narrow my investigation to doctors at The New England Baptist because the hospital specializes in orthopedics and is well known for its excellent surgeons and care. I was on the hunt not only for a great surgeon but one that I felt was compassionate and a very good communicator. I interviewed more than one surgeon. From my first visit with Dr. Carl Talmo, I could tell he was a cut above as he was friendly and informative and explained everything thoroughly. I was able to have all my questions answered and my concerns addressed as well as getting all the information I needed to help me through the surgery. I was told by Dr. Talmo that the surgery went smoothly and very well and the care I got at The Baptist could not have been better as his entire surgical team was outstanding from the prep to the finish. His post operative team and their care was also fantastic. I felt all my homework paid off in spades and I highly recommend The Baptist and Dr. Carl Talmo in particular and without reservation. I was lucky to have the operation followed by superb rehab and when I got home, I was able to do everything by myself and I felt confident that I had the best possible care and outcome.

Dr Talmo replaced both my knees at age 53 and I couldn’t be happier. He was thorough with explaining the procedure, what to expect and what my limits would be after. 1 year later I am doing amazing I would highly recommend this surgeon.

I had a total knee replacement 8 weeks ago, getting stronger and sleeping better everyday. The night of my surgery Dr Talmo called and was so caring and let me know if I had any concerns to call him! The first few weeks I had several questions and found the team at Dr Talmo's to be very reassuring, answering all my questions. When I left a message someone called me back the same day! A friend referred me to Dr Talmo after his total knee replacement and I am so glad he did!!

Talmo ruined my life. He did a THR by putting in a cup that was too large so my psoas rubs on it. I called several times after surgery but he didn't return my calls. The only fix is a redo which is risky for infection and will have to deal with the PAIN of recovery. Besides finding another surgeon in Boston to do a revision is difficult to impossible so will have to live with chronic pain. This is a rooky mistake by someone who is burned out and really doesn't care. If you know what's good for yourself find someone else.

I had my right knee replaced with Dr. Talmo in July of 2018. There hasn't been a day that I haven't regretted chosing New England Baptist (NEB) and Dr. Talmo. Let's begin with the hospital. I've had several negative experiences with NEB. The first negative experience is when I had my hip Arthroscopy and they misplaced me. Yes, they put me in recovery and didn't assign anyone to me. My husband yelling "where is my wife" finally had them realize I'd been unintended to for a couple of hours. Second negative hospital experience was with the knee replacement. In post op, I was experiencing a lot of issues and the nurse literally told me she didn't know what to do. The Dr. on rotation clearly didn't know either. Luckily I have an ICU nurse daughter who recommended an option that did work. Second, let's talk about the Dr. office. Unresponsive. I had an issue after the surgery and they told me I can wait 4 weeks until I see Dr. Talmo. I finally got in touch with Dr. Talmo who did help me and gave me a nerve blocker. In regard to the knee replacement, it's always numb. It's like it doesn't belong to my body. But they still call that success. Yes, it is better than it was, but they must have done some damage to my nerves when they did the nerve block. Maybe it was the nurse anesthesiologist who said " she was going to mix me a great cocktail". I don't want a good cocktail. I wanted good care. I am getting my left knee replaced at Newton Wellesley Hospital next Tueday. They have been unbelieveable in their preop communicatation, care and responsiveness. I trust them even though I have Post Tramatic Surgery Syndrome (PTSS) from New England Baptist and Dr. Talmo's office.

I had a total knee replacement in April of 2022 by Dr Talmo. Absolute disaster from the moment of surgery. I woke of with total leg numbness which lasted 10 days, still have intermittent numbness which he has never addressed. Poor communication, does not listen well. Very arrogant… I have had 2 second opinions recently for poor range of motion and numbness, both feel Doctor is at fault. I did surgery for better quality of life and he ruined mine.

Worst experience ever! He placed the cup of the THA too high catching my iliopsoas. I can have this redone but there is a greater chance of infection, and the PAIN of a long recovery makes this decision difficult. Stay away!!!

(Originally posted this review in 2019. Still accurate in 2022, eight years after my first knee replacement.) Dr. Talmo totally replaced both my knees 4 years apart and I am delighted with the outcome of both. I just hit the one year anniversary of my second knee replacement and had a very positive check up visit with Dr. Talmo. I am playing competitive level recreational tennis 4-5 times per week and have recently taken mountain day hikes exceeding 5 miles and 1800 foot elevation change. The knee replacements have improved my life immeasurably. My experiences with Dr. Talmo, PA Kimberly Chin, the office staff, and the NE Baptist hospital with respect to appointments, responsiveness and follow-up have all been satisfactory over the years. When meeting with any busy surgeon I suggest that you make a list in advance of questions that you have and bring them with you to your appointment. Dr. Talmo was first recommended to me 5 years ago by a close friend. I in turn have recommended him to two relatives for whom he sucessfully replaced joints . I recommend Dr. Talmo without reservation. I also credit my good outcomes to the expert physical therapy provided by Dipti Shah of Carewell Physical Therapy in North Andover.

Wouldn’t go anywhere else and I’m located in Springfield MA
