I saw Dr. Berkman several times over the course of several months in 2020, complaining of severe left-sided pain. Dr. Berkman eventually scheduled me for an upper endoscopy (findings normal) and a colonoscopy (findings normal), and then suggested that my pain was "stress related" vs. that there was anything physically wrong with me. He dismissed my concerns that the pain was coming from my pancreas, even though neither the endoscopy nor the colonoscopy evaluated the pancreas, and pancreatic upset rarely shows up in bloodwork.Another doctor at another practice eventually diagnosed me with a large mass on my pancreas, after I nearly bled out due to pancreatic bleeding.AVOID DR. BERKMAN. I'd advise you to seek care in Boston. There is no "great" GI doctor that I know of in Western MA, not at CDH nor at Baystate.

He did my colonoscopy and without asking/telling me in advance that he would do so, did a biopsy of perfectly healthy tissue. Unacceptable.

Turns out I have some congenital abnormalities to my colon. Twisting and turning. Dr. Berkman's instrument made it all the way to the appendix, with some external pressing on my abdomen. Three cheers for a physician who doesn't know what he will encounter, confronts the difficulty, and overcomes it.

He has absolutely no bedside manner. He is an arrogant egotist.

By his own admittance, he didn't know what was wrong with me or how to help me. Nor did he even try. I had to order my own tests in order to finally get some answers. Furthermore, he didn't even remember what my symptoms were nor did he bother to write them all down. On the second and final visit with him, he asked me, "What are your symptoms again?" while searching the computer screen for some clue as to why I was there. Absolutely unacceptable.

My symptoms were dismissed after one look at me. Severe, acute symptoms got superficial explanation and patronizing guidance.

Dr. Berkman is a caring and conscientious doctor. I felt comfortable with him form the beginning and he always took the time to explain my diagnosis and treatment options. He got me through a very difficult illness.
