John Stevenson's Online Review Report Card

Dr. Stephenson Performed a very successful cervical fusion on me and 02. In 2006, He was not on my insurance and I had a doctor closer to me perform a lumbar fusion. The lumbar surgery has not had the same results as the cervical. I have had horrible tail bone and right hip pain, as well as pain in the back of my legs and buttocks and weakness in my legs and a horrible nerve pain that I live with every day, in February 24th 2021 I had an in person visit with Dr. Stevenson. The relief I felt in finally getting to him, knowing that he had done such a good job on my neck was short-lived. He had his usual office rapport and gave me an opinion that he felt like he could find what others had not been able to. I don’t believe my problem is in the disc as much as it is the nerves or ligaments that surround it. He wanted to order MRIs and CAT scans on my lumbar area and then we would meet again. This was on February 24. I was waiting on a call from the doctors office when I received a insurance letter in the mail. They were informing me that my request for MRI and CAT scan for my NECK, had been denied. I called Dr. Stevenson‘s office and explained it wasn’t my neck that was supposed to have been ordered but my lumbar area. I have month by month documentation of the problems I have had with my lumbar area. I do not blame my insurance for denying test on the wrong part of my body. So that’s just par for the course. I figured once I called his office and told them that needed to be corrected, that it would be and I would get an approval and I could begin to find out what was wrong. I received that letter within weeks of my visit., I called Dr. Stevenson’s office immediately and explained the mistake. I was told she would talk to Dr. Stevenson and get back with me. Never happened. I waited for the change and expected to hear from my insurance, an imaging center., or even the Dr. That never happened. I called again, I asked if they had sent the new request to my imaging center, I was told they didn’t know. I guess I’m crazy for thinking she can pull my file and be able to see a copy of the fax sent over to the imaging center but I was told instead, I would have to call the imaging center to see if they received anything via fax, from their office. I told Dr. Stevenson’s staff that, that wasn’t my job, it was hers but I would make the call if it would help speed things up. The imaging center had never received anything from Dr. Stevenson‘s office, I called to let them know that. Attitude and rudeness again, I asked for the office manager. When I explain to her the problems I had had going back to February, she listened but did nothing to try to help solve the problem. She had such an attitude with me and she was the third person at his office I had spoke to. Her name by the way, was Taylor. I finally said enough is enough. I explained to Taylor on my last call May7, that it was a shame that a doctor as good as Dr. Stevenson was, was being represented by the type of staff that I was dealing with. I told them he had given me a life-saving surgery and I had hoped for a second but that I would not put myself through the disrespect of dealing with his office in order to see him. I have yet to go to a doctor. When you get treated like this whether it’s by the doctor or his staff after years and years of horrible chronic pain. I felt like I was more of a nuisance to his office because they made a mistake. I had driven from Jacksonville to Gainesville to see him specifically. I was willing to put me and my family through driving back-and-forth because I had that much faith in him. I can’t believe he is aware of the way his staff treats his patients. If he is and allows it, then his reputation deserves to suffer. I would say it was one bad office worker if I hadn’t spoken to three. Somewhere along the way his office has gotten the opinion that they can and do treat people however they want. He is an excellent doctor and I would recommend him but not his office. Unfortunately, you have to go through them to get to him. I would write him a five star in 2002. I don’t know what he’s like today. I would love to have found out.. I would write his staff 1 star...

Dr. Stevenson is a very good doctor, but is staff is totally unreliable. He preformed surgery on both of my SI Joints and I'm pleased with the results. He never gave up on trying to resolve my pain issue. But his staff is an entirely different story. They don't answer the phone, they don't return calls and they don't follow with insurance authorization requests. On three different occasions, I had to contact my own insurance to follow up on authorization requests. I had to do his staff member's job for them. On the third authorization request, they failed to provide the insurance company with the necessary documents to authorize a procedure and the request was denied. Because of the poor service from his staff, I decided to find another neurosurgeon. My decision wasn't made because of his skills, but the lack of his staff skills. If I could rate his staff with a zero plus I would.

Dr Stevenson performed his 3rd surgery on my this am. He is the greatest dr I’ve ever had. It’s a good feeling to go to surgery with a surgeon you have total trust and faith in . He has the greatest staff as well. I don’t think I’d go to any other surgeon. I highly recommend him to anyone for anything in his field. My daughter was there today and met him was highly impressed with his bedside manner and caring way. Thank you Dr Stevenson for being you! And Missy, Vance and all staff.

First I must share that as a relatively young man, I have an extensive medical history that has dominated the better part of my last 15 years. That history has placed me in the care of more medical professionals than I could ever remember. To say that I have seen and experienced it all might be an understatement. And, in all fairness to a profession that is one of two with a license to "Practice"; there is both good and bad (and everything in between) when it comes to ANY profession. Dr. Stevenson is genuine, sincere, considerate, caring, thorough, attentive, and very knowledgeable. He is not only very capable of dealing with acute medical issues, but he is also very focused on his patients' overall health and well-being. For myself, and presumably others, that is very important. That is unless your idea of a good time is hanging around in medical offices. But, the one most important characteristic of Dr. Stevenson that I have the utmost respect for is that he is always willing to defer to others with specialties or expertise beyond his skill set. Far too often I have found physicians that attempt to be the do all and end all for their patients' medical care (playing God). And those are the ones that invariably get in over their heads and begin making poor decisions, and lose the respect and trust of the people for which they took their Hippocratic Oath. If you're looking for a physician that will always be directed by your best interests and health, Dr. Stevenson may be the best physician for you. I am grateful that he is an essential part of my overall healthcare.

Could not have been friendlier. Chatted with me as opposed to shooting questions to diagnose something. I went for a physical that lasted about 45 minutes. Could not have been any easier....I HATE PHYSICALS, but the doctor made it a comfortable experience.

Dr Steven was quick to indentify the cause of my arm..did the ACDF to correct a previous workcomp injury and has given my back 100% Quality of Life..I had forgotten what is was like to live with pain..Upon waking in the recovery room the horrific pain in both my arms was gone....I have lived the past 30 months in darkness.....Thank You for bringing me back into the Light..I now park in the furthest space away because it is no longer a burden to walk...my operation was almost 8 weeks ago...i have to remember....not to overdo it.i get so excited to be at Zero pain level.

Wonderful doctor and staff. Great bedside manner. Excellent results from surgery.
