List of Patrick S. Whelan's Reviews
He is a great Doctor and a very professional surgeon who contrary to some of the reviews cares about his patients.
This guy needs to retire and fast brutal surgeon...........
No follow up couldn't care less about his patients....
A very humiliating experience. I had surgery for an infected cyst. He asked if I owned a bath tub. He had me wait while he giggled on the phone. Apparently was going through a divorce... as if I needed to know this. I hear he is a good surgeon but his attitude is cringe-worthy.
I am writing this on behalf of my father who was operated on by dr.whelan not only was surgury unnecessary but has left my father completely disabled and in chronic pain for the duration of the rest of his life and his likely to have to more surgury to have any chance of a normal life he has tried so hard to fix himself but without success he put all his trust in this doctor which turned out to be a big mistake...my father has lost everything his ability to work his friends the things he loved to do are a now over
Dr. Whelan is one of the most professional members of the medical community that I have ever had as my surgeon. He is on time, courteous and totally down to earth. He warned me about the pain involved for my procedure and did a top notch operation. I would recommend him to anyone and hope he will be there to help others for a long time.
I, and my family, have been seeing Dr. Whelan for many many years through thyroid cancer, colonoscopies and gallbladder surgery. We have always found him knowledgeable, professional and personable. Every time I have been to his office I have always been seen on time which is great when you’re paying for parking. I would not hesitate to recommend him. Office staff great too.
Very bad experience with this surgeon do your self a favor dont let this guy operate on you if u need surgery u will be sorry
This review is from my own personal experience with this medical doctor. Potential patients can take this information and make their own informed decision based on their situation. I got referred to Dr. Whelan (DW) by my family doctor for a rectal issue requiring surgery. This was my first mistake, as I didn't do sufficient research, as I believed DW was a colon rectal specialist. He obviously is not and is a only a general surgeon. I am not trying to degrade a general surgeon as they do great work but whenever a person has a medical issue confined to an area, it is always more prudent/wise to see a doctor who specializes in that area. I ended up seeing DW a few times (it is not easy to switch doctors in Canada due to wait times etc) and each time I left his office feeling as if I left my GP's office instead of a surgeon's office. DW provided ZERO surgical knowledge, minimal examination, NEVER closes his office door (I had to close the door each time) and is quite frankly a bitter grumpy man. He is possibly nearing retirement but in all reality that is no excuse. In the interest of fairness, DW never misdiagnosed me but he certainly didn't do anything to try and correct the issue much. As with any rectal issue, it is routine for a doctor to conduct a digital rectal examination to check for additional symptoms. DW did not and never bothered with one during any of my visits. I still remember DW telling me to "google" my issue. While I understand we live in a media driven age where information is easily obtained, he is STILL a doctor and has a DUTY to provide relevant information when it comes to a patients upcoming care. I was not asking for anything beyond my own medical care. Looking back, asking me to google was definitely very unprofessional and many people even his colleagues would admit to that when pressed on it. I eventually got referred and saw a true colon rectal specialist in downtown Toronto and the difference was night and day. Up to this point I have no idea how DW surgical skills are, it must be decent for him to achieve to the level he is at, but he never instilled any trust in me to find out. Do your homework on this doctor or any doctor. The best advocate for your health is YOURSELF. Dr. Whelan is no longer the Chief of Surgery at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. He still was during my brief time with him and due to that title, I expected more from him which definitely was a disappointment. This review can also be an indictment on Markham's medical community as there really isn't a lot of true specialists in Markham and MSH itself isn't held in high regard and always had a bad reputation (though they are slowly trying to correct it now). Make use of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website when researching your doctor. It is there to help everyone make a smart decision. I truly hope someone from Dr. Whelan's office or even himself read this review because we know constructive criticism can be harsh but it does or should make us a better person (doctor in this case) in the long run.
I had appendicitis in October 2016, and was taken to MSH as an emergency, Dr Whelan performed my surgery, he was very honest and upfront from the beginning. It was found that i had a mass and ended up having a section of bowel removed because of this mass. He was very good with my husband post surgery and extremely good with follow-up. I recovered quickly without complications due to his level of care and ompetence. Thank you Dr Whelan for your professionalism, care and knowledge.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
