I worked as Dr. Goldsmith’s scribe for just under a year before heading to Medical School, and this is my honest opinion of his work: Dr. Goldsmith is one of the most diagnostically accurate and surgically competent doctors I have met. He has a meticulous but standardized approach to both diagnosis and treatment, which really streamlines these processes and ensures high quality of care. He is also a strong proponent of conservative treatment and is quite selective about the patients he recommends surgery for, reserving invasive procedures only for those patients he feels really need it. To me, that has always spoken volumes – there is nothing more honorable than a surgeon telling their patient they do not need surgery. To add onto that, Dr. Goldsmith truly practices what he preaches. There is no health advice he gives to patients that he doesn’t follow himself, which makes him all the more credible as a physician. To put it simply – As a pre-medical student working in a variety of healthcare settings, you get to see lots of examples of things you shouldn’t do, habits you shouldn’t pick up on, and ways in which you’d like to be different as a doctor. But sometimes you get to be mentored by someone who inspires the way you do want to practice medicine. Dr. Goldsmith was that doctor for me. If nothing else, this is my nod to the excellence of his work and clinical outcomes.
