List of Benjamin Huffard's Reviews
He basically sucks, except for wielding a scalpel and a drill, blah blah blah...
Dr. Huffard is hands down the most compassionate and professional doctor that I have seen right alongside my primary care physician, Robert Fraser. I have never seen a doctor who wanted to look out for my personal interests as much as he did. He thoroughly explained all of my options and my condition. He went above and beyond anything I have experienced. Thank you!
Dr. Huffard performed reattachment of my badly torn gluteus medius tendon four days ago. He is only one of two highly recommended surgeons in Maine that I could find. This is an uncommon surgery. Recovery is not easy and he told me to plan on a full year before returning to golf, bowling, hiking, etc. He fully and patiently explained the procedure and expected outcome. I am very pleased with his approach and skills. His entire team is top notch. I feel like he and I made a good decision.
Quite long but please read. About 3 years ago now I got knee surgery from an ortho in Ellsworth (not of which I am writing a review) as I was still experiencing significant pain and read positive reviews about OA in Portland I opted to travel the 4 hours for what seemingly was superior care. Long story short for about a year I received injections of Euflexxa and it was improved so every six months I continued with injections (although I surely will eventually require a knee replacement). This summer I went to get my next dose of injections assuming I’d be given the SAME injections however the PA administered cortisone....so after driving 4 hours I did not receive the treatment I desired and had NEVER been given previously. While frustrating I chalked it up to what could have been substandard communication. Waited the 8 weeks, paid for the injections I didn’t want, and drove ANOTHER 4 hours (which wouldn’t have been necessary had it been done the first time) seeking what I went for the
Had rotator cuff repair surgery in October. I've been very satisfied with my experience with Dr. Huffard. He clearly explained what was wrong and what he would try to do. He was also very candid regarding the factors that could impact a successful outcome. Surgery went well with no surprises. Rehab has been going smoothly.
Wish I'd read this page before consulting him, although I only had the one office visit. Agreed, extremely poor manner. Unconcerned to the point of being injurious. "Well, *this* can't be fixed," Something to the effect of "Well you're OLD" (not even normal retirement age, yet). Zero talk of pain remediation in torn bicep, the part of the injury that hurts the most, except that "biceps aren't much use anyway so if it really bothers me I could cut it in half." Hello? No suggestion of trying cortisone/lidocain injections first? The torn/attenuated bicep is only the most painful of a number of problems including broken clavicle that I agree is probably permanent. But I think I made it clear that regaining functionality is important to me (one MUST shovel snow), and he made it clear he didn't want to do anything at all. Not even string me along to bilk me of my money.
My 15 year old daughter needed arthroscopic hip surgery and we were referred to Dr. Huffard. I can't say enough great things about him. He was very informative and was wonderful with my daughter who was obviously very nervous about the procedure. She had the surgery about 10 months ago, healed excellently and has had no issues since! I would recommend Dr. Huffard to anyone!
"You'll feel a lot better once you have a new hip," says Dr. Huffard when greeting me on the morning of my surgery. "Uhhh, I thought you were operating on my shoulder . . . " says I, my confidence plummeting. "Oh, uh, yeah. Maybe I should read the chart." Yeah, maybe you should! I was his first patient of the day so it wasn't as though he confused me with someone else. I'm a forgiving person, though. Hey anyone can make a mistake, but when I returned for my post-op appointment 8 weeks later and asked about the surgery, he still didn't know what he had done. He told me he had operated on a different ligament than he did. Mind you, he wasn't going to tell me anything about the operation at all - merely asked me to move my arm one way, then the other, then goodbye; I wanted more information about what went on. He rushed through looking at the pictures, never really explaining what he did and half answered my questions. I felt I was clearly bothering him to ask about my surgery. He is a good surgeon, I think, which is why I didn't rate him a 1. He had operated on my other shoulder two years ago and I have had no problems. However, he was so abrupt when I went for my post-op on the first shoulder surgery that I canceled my follow up appointments, preferring to defer to my PT doc who did actually seem to care about my recovery. I will be doing the same this time around. I have no need to see Dr. Huffard ever again. I gave him a second chance, hoping I had caught him on a bad day. Clearly, this is his modus operandi, pushing patients through as quickly as possible without asking how they are or listening to them or giving information when asked. This shoulder had severe damage when compared with the first one and the recovery has been slow. I could have used some support. Don't expect it from Dr. Huffard. When a doc can't be bothered to even review your chart so he knows what he operated on, don't expect much else from him either.
He acted like I wasn’t in pain and didn’t have a problem. I have great insurance and after 2 appointments with him (and two $25 co-pays) my bill was $200! He was rude and dismissive! After the MRI he said nothing is wrong with my knee. Why does it still hurt after 1 1/2 years?! Go elsewhere!
HAD a terrible procedure that did not fix my hip. He was very dismissive about my pain and more concerned about my pain meds. I went to another hip specialist and had a total hip replacement and my pain is gone along with my pain meds. My friend had the same outcome stay away

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
