Sean C. Dowdy's Online Review Report Card

I came to Dr Dowdy after a very large polyp was removed and proved to be a kind that can't be confirmed to be cancer or not. I found his manner and tone to be soothing and comforting. I felt that he truly cared about me as an individual not just a diagnosis. He listened to what I said and referred me to a colleague to be able to perform 2 surgeries at the same time. Dr Dowdy performed the hysterectomy then his colleague performed surgery to install a pelvic sling. The hysterectomy proved to be challenging due to my cervix and uterus being extremely muscular. His explanation to my family was straightforward and at the same time reassuring. My husband was very impressed with the time and care Dr Dowdy took in explaining why the surgery took longer than predicted. Every person I encountered was helpful and friendly. I am so happy I saw Dr Dowdy. He made this scary time bearable.

I cannot say enough about this fine doctor! In Jan 2013 I flew from Anchorage, Alaska to Mayo for an ovarian cancer (stage 3C) surgery. Dr. Dowdy was the head surgeon , along with an incredible team. When I woke up from surgery, he told me that it was one of the biggest tumor loads he had seen in his career. They had opened me up and determined going forward with that much cancer was too dangerous. I was sent home to Alaska to begin chemotherapy. 5 years later, I have a great quality of life....very little cancer left and am only taking one little Letrozole pill a day. I never have had the debulking surgery. He and his team made the very best decision NOT to cut that day. I so appreciate his "restraint" on that snowy day! Thank you, Dr. Dowdy! Mary VanTreeck

Brilliant man!

I disagree with an earlier post about bedside manner. Just because Dr. Dowdy does not behave like a circus clown/politician/used-car salesman does not mean that he has no bedside manner. When my life was rocked by a devastating diagnosis, I appreciated Dr. Dowdy's composure and concern. He also has a cool wife, a nice family, and a cerebral interest in literature. He's a well-rounded individual who is more than capable of saving lives.

Dr. Dowdy has NO bedside manner and doesn't know how to talk with his patients. He has no compassion. Our daughter was diagnosed with a rare cancer and he performed the surgery as we were told he was the expert. He is excellent with a knife but from there forward, he's worthless. Most of the battle is recovery and he basically indicated to her that she has one foot in the grave. She's 24 years old and has life ahead of her. After he talked with her, that is when he actually graced us with his presence, she didn't want to live. He had nothing positive to say about what her future held. I confronted him about his bedside manner later via a phone call and he indicated that "I won't lie to my patients". I stated, you don't need to lie, you need to utilize a different selection of words that don't leave your patients wanting to give up and die. I wouldn't recommend Dr. Sean Dowdy. There are other doctors that are better, less egotistical and definitely more compassionate. We've since found that doctor and our daughter is living life again with positive strides.

Phenomenal care provided by Dr Dowdy and office staff... thorough, attentive, and included my husband and family in conversations and decisions, as appropriate; very concerned about the "whole" patient, wonderful bedside manner. I am 4+ years cancer-free! Thank you to all!!!

Dr. Dowdy and his staff disputed my GYN diagnosis that I came to Mayo with. He indicated that I had another serious medical issue that needed immediate attention and that was more consistent with the data. Thank you Dr. Dowdy
