List of Barnes-Jewish Extended Care's Reviews
Nurses were not responding to crying out patients who were in pain or in need. Inadequate staffing and services to include cold and late meals. My father only had 1 "partial sponge bath" in the 4 months he was in there for cancer treatment. There was 1 nurse that would always clean his genitals every time he urinated. I was in the medical field for 17 years and this entire situation is deplorable and disgusting. I'm glad I moved away from St Louis.
Do NOT bring your loved one here! I have never seen such a horrible rehab facility. My grandfather was here ONE day ad we brought him home. If I could give never star rating I absolutely would! My grandfather went here for only a few days after having 5 bypass surgery done. First when we walked in to let them know we were there the receptionist was extremely rude and ignorant until she got called out on it from me. The first nurse that took care of grandfather was truly amazing, his name was Dillon and I would recommend him but nobody else. The nurse overnight gave my grandfather cough medicine but then when he should have gotten it again at 2am and he was asked by her! She never returned. So at 5:30am he got up when he started to get heart palpitations to go find the nurse. On his walk down the hallway he heard TWO different people screaming for help and asking if someone heard them. When he got to the nurse she yelled at him for getting up and coming down the hallway and very sarcastically asked him if he wanted a pain pill also. She gave him his pain pill but no cough medicine. He called myself and my mom/his daughter begging us to get him out of there. I showed up at 2:30pm; to find out what was going on. I was there for about 2 1/2 hours and not once did anyone ever come in to check on him or see if he needs anything. They all were sitting down doing nothing! When I had walked into his room, he was laying on the bed very uncomfortably on top of everything because they didn’t help him. I had to help him sit up. I sat there and watched him suffer from coughing so bad. I couldn’t do it. So I got up to go find his nurse for something and if she wasn’t going to give it to him i was going to get him some and give it to him. When I found his nurse I asked her politely if she was the nurse caring for him and very rudely she looked me up and down and in a snobby voice replied that she was. So I asked her about the cough medicine and she told me he probably doesn’t have an order for it. But she never made the move to look so I told her I was not walking away until she does in fact look. She asked me who I was and I told her at least FIVE times I was his granddaughter. I told her I did NOT like her attitude and she was supposed to be the one caring fro my grandfather. Her response? “Oh well”. So I told her I was going to give him cough medicine because I was not sitting back and watching him suffer. I work in a retirement home so I know how everything works. Every bandage he had from the hospital was still on! With blood and everything. I had to take it off! My mom and I decided we would take him home to our house to be cared for better. I told the nurse I wanted his medication because he was coming home with me. So she told her “supervisor” who took an hour and a half to come to us! In that time I watched the nurse taking care of him continuously talking about us to all the other workers there. They all kept looking down the hall at us. When his dinner was brought to him I watched his nurse WATCH him struggle to sit up in the chair and not help him up. When the supervisor FINALLY came over and asked me what was going on I told her I wanted his medications because he was coming home with me. She said okay they can’t make him stay eve though they would like him to. With that care?! Over my dead body would I let my grandfather knowingly stay there with that treatment. Which I made it known. When I told her I do this for my job she was NOT happy because I was advocating for my grandfather and taking him out of that situation. When he had to sign the paperwork to leave BOTH nurses sat there AGAIN when he was struggling to sit up to sign it. I had to help him! As they turned around to get his medications and the paper for him to sign his nurse IN FRONT of me asked her “supervisor” where it was because she had no idea how to do it! No wander she couldn’t take care of my grandfather she doesn’t know how to do her job! There was no management there or anything this weekend! DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONES HERE!
I don't even know where to start with this place. I was brought here for rehab after a complex spinal surgery at Barnes Jewish hospital. I was transported and put in a room with 2 beds ( cots) and a tray with a hamburger and a square of cake. I waited and waited until finally someone wandered in. She looked surprised to see me but said I could have the hamburger. Uh no. This is NOT a rehab facility. It's a nursing home and I did not see another rehab patient the entire 5 days ( seemed like 5 weeks!) I saw an OT once and a PT once and that was the extent of my rehabilitation . It was ridiculous! They forgot my meals on several occasions. When I asked about it, I was told that the kitchen was closed but I could have a turkey sandwich. I was given a Saran wrapped thing that was wet and the meat was not a color you'd want to eat. I found a little box of Honey Nut Cheerios in the " dining room". I never say anyone in there but there was a really nice empty coffee maker. A couple of tables and a chair. Outside the window in my room was a pretty Japanese garden with benches and paths and a gazebo but never any people. I found one nice girl at the front desk who let me sneak out there to read. Otherwise I watched some squirrels playing in a tree most of the time. I saw a "doctor" twice for maybe 15 seconds... Long enough to listen to my back with his Fisher Price stethoscope. I'm not sure he spoke English. Between the hospital and this place, I was not given the opportunity to take a shower in 18 days! I asked, BEGGED everyone I could find and FINALLY a very kind lady told me she'd come and get me and let me shower and wash my hair. It was pure heaven even though there was very little privacy. I could go on about the noisy laughter at 3am by employees, the residents crying out endlessly for a nurse at all hours, the neglect, incompetence and outright rudeness of some employees but hopefully I've gotten my point across.
Edit: Was able to talk with staff finally and they were able to adjust his meds back. I truly appreciate it. The staff is taking care of him well. Original 1⭐: I've tried calling 5 times (currently out of state and cannot be an in person advocate for my husband) and the phones just ring. I'm trying to get a hold of staff who are administering medications my husband was taken off of days prior to admittance. Despite a family member showing the chart that he's not on the medications because they were affecting him negatively, they won't stop them. Now with a three day weekend, my husband will be falsely given 5 days worth of medications he's not supposed to take. Don't appreciate the lack of communication with other facilities, nor the lack of immediacy in remedying such a huge miscommunication.
Rude staff
My mother-in-law has been there for several weeks and I 100% DO NOT recommend this facility for you or your families needs. They are short-staffed almost daily to the point of having to get staff from outside agencies. Medication is often not given on time and residents have to ask for it. The call lights go unanswered for long periods of time. The physical therapists often go against Dr orders, having residents do things the shouldn't be. The social worker's main goal seems to be money rather than getting the resident home. Money over care is a disgusting way to run a rehab facility.
The receptionist is extremely rude and unprofessional.
I looked extensively and combed all the reviews of several places when we needed to place my mom for care. I was nervous because of some of the reviews I read. I felt stuck because we had no other accepting facility and mom had to be discharged from the hospital. So, my husband and I went on a tour and we were greeted warmly. While we were given a tour of the facility, we got to see the rehab center, patient care floors, patio, main gathering room, and a room setup. Mom was transferred in on a Friday evening. We were greeted by the receptionist, brief check in downstairs and then the EMT’s were sent to mom’s assigned room. My brother and I shortly followed. The EMT’s got mom settled into the bed and established oxygen support. We immediately had care team members coming in to introduce themselves, check mom over, take a personal inventory of what we had brought with her and they brought her a dinner plate! The Nurse Practitioner and Doctor were both on site and came in to do their intake, medical evaluation and began review of the hospital transfer papers. The CNA came in and introduced herself and went over basic routine things with us and helped us to get mom settled in. We were given guidance as to how the weekend routine would likely go. Every person I engaged with, either via eye contact or verbally, acknowledged us. Mom was in the facility from 10/14 until 11/2. It was overall a pleasant experience. Every team member who cared for mom, did just that. They TRULY CARED for her. Carl, Diane, LaTravina (forgive me if I spelled your name wrong), Mariah, Angela, Cindy, Laura, Phyllis, the receptionist, activities, kitchen and housekeeping teams and so many others whose names escape me at this time. Thank you, sincerely, thank you! While we didn’t get to bring mom home because she was taken by her illness, your care, compassion and empathy was felt by all of us who interacted with you and we appreciate your hard work and dedication. I truly wish you all the best and hope that other families share their positive experiences, their appreciation and kindness with you all. Love and Light, From Mrs Knibb’s family 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Rehab part was good, other than that the aids were awful they never changed my grandpa and they left him sitting in a wheelchair all night. His roommate told my parents to get him out of there ASAP because the aids don’t treat patients with dementia with any respect
