Steven Ofner's Online Review Report Card

This is an update to my earlier review. Today I saw an experienced ophthalmologist at another clinic. While he didn't disagree with Dr. Sabeh's findings, he disputed the seriousness and urgency of every description and recommendation she made. He was quite clear that I have very minimal cataracts and that the decision to have surgery will be many years off. He identified a problem I was aware of and that she didn't notice. He reassured me that in spite of her statement that I might have a stroke in my eye, this was rare for my condition, rarer still in females. Dr. Sabeh is lucky I didn't make a complaint with her licensing board. Her lack of bedside manner, extreme descriptions of minimal signs, and failure to provide the information needed to make decisions are all practice problems. That she recommended surgery when there is functionally no problem seems money-grubbing and is an inappropriate degree of intervention.

After reading the other reviews, my suspicion was confirmed. Over the past ten years of going to Dr. Ofner, I have noticed a decline in accessibility and general care. My daughter and I will be looking for care elsewhere. Her glasses all this sudden needed prisms and made her sick. Mine was not a good prescription and left words blurry.

Dr Ofner performed cataract surgery on my right eye. Went back two weeks later for my left eye, Dr Ofner was a no show. No call from office notifying me that Dr was no longer seeing patients. Dr Sabah performed my 2nd surgery two weeks later. Office manager lied to me about notification. After my cataracts were removed, my results and experience were completely different. Dr Ofner seemed rushed, threatened to stop surgery if I couldn’t control my breathing. When my right eye lens was placed, Ofner over stretched my iris when placing and it is now paralyzed. Dr Sabah was very patient during surgery on left eye, much better results and highly recommend her. Now I’m very sensitive to light in right eye and wish Dr Sabah had given continuity of my care

I hate to leave a bad review on Dr. Ofner's page, since my services from him have always seemed fine. However, he was not available and the office had me see Dr. Sabah instead. She stated that I had cataracts and was a candidate for surgery. Here's what this practice has previously posted on Yelp about cataracts: "I'm so sorry that you felt we were eager to do your surgery.  It sounds like we miscommunicated.  Typically, cataract surgery is done when:1. A visually significant cataract exists,AND2. The patient is reporting symptoms of glare, halos, blurred vision, difficult driving at night, difficulty, or frequent changes in glasses prescription.  Even when both these criteria exist, the good news is that surgery is never urgent.  Some folks are nervous about surgery, and others simply may not be bothered by any symptoms.  It doesn't even matter how long the patient waits--the cataract can be safely removed (and vision fully restored) at any point."Now, I made no complaints about cataract symptoms and I'm not experiencing any. So which is it--did Dr. Ofner fail to diagnose cataracts despite my regular exams, or did Dr. Sabah jump to the surgical option rather than follow standard of practice? For all of that, Dr. Sabah provided no verbal or written information or handouts about my cataracts in particular (if I have them), cataracts in general, or cataract surgery, leaving me alarmed, uninformed, and unwilling to return to this practice.

I would agree with the two earlier posts.  They do not seem overly patient oriented.  I made an appointment for an evaluation in anticipation of cataract surgery.  On the day before the appointment I received, not one but four phone calls, wanting to change my appointment time because they "had a gap in the schedule".  I had a morning meeting 80 miles away and I live 120 miles away and could not accommodate them.  The poor scheduler called two more times to see if there was anything I could do,  perhaps reschedule for another day.  I said the next morning might work since I had planned to spend the night in Eugene.  That wouldn't work either because the next day was a Friday and the doctor doesn't work on Fridays (common in the medical profession).  Frankly, I viewed the entire episode as arrogance on the part of the physician.  It appears he had a gap where he wasn't earning fees and wanted to fill it so he could go home early, presumably, since he wasn't coming in Friday.  All that may not be the case but it is certainly how it appeared to me. I finally agreed to see another doctor in the clinic at the original appointment hour, but just for the evaluation.  As for the surgery, the jury is out.  I'll make a decision on that after I see how the evaluation goes.  The reviews are not making me feel warm and fuzzy.

Every time I see Dr. Ofner he is very informative. He has a nice way of communicating and is very professional. He also wears beautiful neck-ties!

My mother in law had cataracts so bad that she fell a couple of times. She now has excellent vision thanks for Dr. Ofner's cataract surgery. His caring manner and decades of experience made me and my mother in law feel so comfortable through the whole process. She was very nervous before doing the first eye but then was smiling and laughing before the 2nd eye. Thanks Dr. Ofner and your great staff for making this a wonderful experience and helping her see so well.

I recommend Dr Ofner to children and adults alike and have seen him or a partner for years since relocating to Eugene! He is thourough, reliable and gives excellent medical advice. The staff are sweet and helpful too!

Kind, gentle, and very smart Doctor. Always makes you feel better when you leave. He did cataract surgery on my mother and she loves him. He seems so genuine and we love how each staff member is A+ professional.
