I’m in a weird situation at 22 with a catheter and he understands it’s difficult. He also understands that I want to be a normal 20-something year old and do normal things, and I actually owe my newly clean and properly furnished house to him. He helped manage my bladder pain so much that I was able to make contact with old friends, start to work on myself with a pain psychologist, start taking care of plants (hey, I’ve only killed two so far!), maintained being a full time student, joined an honors fraternity, and hopefully will soon be taking on a part time job. This might sound like a lot, but it’s kind of amazing considering a few months ago leaving my bed was hard. So… thank you, Dr. Leonardo for understanding my weird situation, having a great sense of humor, and handling my 22-year-old panic attacks over some things that are stupid, some not, with grace, lol. It’s hard navigating a catheter, feeding tube, and central line as a 22 year old, but thanks to Dr. Leonardo, with some help and modifications, I’m able to keep up with the cool kids, so to speak. I have a life now outside of online school!

When I was first referred to Dr. Leonardo in 2019, I didn’t know what to expect from the visit. For some reason, I thought palliative care addressed pain only. I was very wrong! I was completely impressed with Dr. Leonardo and his nurse from my very first appt. Every possible side effect related to my medical condition was either asked about and/or addressed. Everything from pain, sleep, appetite, fatigue, bowels, mental health, relationships, and more! When I had pain but didn’t want to use a controlled substance, Dr. Leonardo had several options to try. When I brought up gaining weight from my medicine, Dr. Leonardo showed me an app that I found very helpful! Dr. Leonardo is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to medications to treat side effects. He listens and answers questions with very thorough explanations. I volunteer for an organization as a mentor to other young people with my disease and because of how helpful Dr. Leonardo has been, I always discuss palliative care with those I mentor.

Dr. Leonardo is brilliant. On numerous occasions he has given me information about medications that other doctors have prescribed - important information I wish I had known earlier. He is incredibly personable and very professional. He truly cares about his patients, going the extra mile to follow up and make sure that they are okay and have what they need. Dr. Leo is extremely caring and understanding of serious illness and end of life care issues. I was his patient for 5 months and actually lived through hospice! ;) During that time, he controlled my pain (difficult to do), ensured my comfort, helped my family, and answered my questions about dying with kindness, honesty, and respect. I would recommend him to anyone in my own family. A+!
