Rude, uncaring, unprofessional, and kind of scammy

Staff is great and friendly

Started seeing Dr. Gueron when my WakeMed team felt my surgical issues where to high level and needed Duke to help. Dr. Gueron was very cautious and conservative before jumping in and doing any furhter surgery as I had been through so many surgries after a leak when I had to be switched from the sleeve to a RNY after only two months in 2017. And then have had persisten nasuea ever since. I did have to end up with a feeding tube for most of 2021 but Dr. Gureon did excellent on that. He has left the practice and Dr. Sudan assumed my care. He had to do a hernia repair where the feeding tubes were. He did an amazing job and recovery has been great. They are a very conservative group and do not jump right away to preform surgery which is a good thing unless they feel it is an emergency.

The surgeons are very skilled and the PAs take wonderful care of you throughout your journey. They have excellent support groups and lifelong yearly touch points (more frequent if you need it). The dietitians and psychologists are also very helpful. I strongly recommend this program.

Dr. Sudan and his team did an amazing job. I am so happy that I chose this office for my weight loss surgery. All the staff is friendly and helpful. And Dr.Sudan answered all my questions and put me at ease for my surgery.

Wonderful staff that really care and help you go through the whole experience, from day one until you die. Yes, there will be set backs before (can take a while to get appointments needed to proceed) and after (lots of information about how to maintain and lose the weight) the surgery, but the end result is definitely worth the effort. The staff at the hospital (Duke Regional) are awesome as well. Best decision I've ever made !!!

I had DS surgery with Dr. Sudan May 2018. His whole team is incredible. They have helped me so much through this last years. His nurse,Vickie, is always available to answer questions or get my medical needs covered quickly. My experience with them leading up to and through surgery was that they are very supportive of your journey. Duke Regional, where the surgery is done, has a strong culture of compassionate patient care. I felt so cared for while in hospital. I reached goal weight right on schedule , in 18 months, and have maintained within a few pounds since. I truly believe Dr. Sudan and his team saved my life! If you’re contemplating bariatric surgery of any kind, Duke Center for Metabolic Weight Loss Surgery is the first place to check it out. All their doctors have lots of experience and have great outcomes. If I could give this center a 10, I would.

I had revision from sleeve to DS in October 2020 with Dr. Portenier and his amazing support staff known collectively as ‘the Duke Team.’ To put it bluntly, Dr. Portenier SAVED MY LIFE. I was 160 lbs heavier than now and close to death, and truth be told, almost welcoming it. I had given up. Dr. P provided hope and gave me a tool and a team to sustain me. I do also appreciate the monthly virtual support group meetings. I need that. More than that I appreciate the free portal access to the PAs, dietitians, nurses, etc. who are ALWAYS willing to answer questions and go above and beyond to help. Previous weight loss surgery practice stopped seeing you after a year. Duke follows you for LIFE. I need that accountability and appreciate Duke’s continued dedication to their patients . I’ve got a long way to go, but blessed beyond measure on this journey with Dr. P and his amazing team!!!

The Duke Center is by far the best. The staff of physicians, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, and others work well as a team to see if surgeon is for you and help you achieve your goals. They are kind and responsive and helpful at every turn. I have many friends who have gone through this process at other places who aren’t so informed about their meal plans and procedures. It is worth the effort to get to Duke from wherever you are. They go above and beyond.

Dr. Portenier is a fantastic provider and surgeon. He is very friendly and helpful. He always takes the time to answer all my questions and concerns. His team is amazing as well. His nurse, Melissa, always gets back to me in a timely manner with any questions. His PA, Blair, is very attentive at all post-op appointments. Maria and Julie, the nutritionists, give such helpful information during each visit and also help with providing samples or discounts that may be available for supplies needed. The monthly meetings are helpful for motivation and to stay on track. My experience with this team has far exceeded my previous experience with another surgeon. All of the follow-up from the team is super helpful in the recovery and post-op process.
