Dr Shimmyo was referred by my GP; I found relatively little in the way of reviews, so I am happy to provide this one. My condition is stye progressed into a really large chalazion. I phoned first to verify that my insurance is taken. Upon arriving and after filling out all the new patient paperwork and signing all those HIPPA forms, I asked the office staff more questions about what exactly is covered by my insurance. They answered my questions thoroughly and I felt comfortable knowing that I would not have any surprises at checkout. I was seen immediately and the technician was very nice and appeared to be competent at her job. After all the tests, I was seen by Dr Shimmyo who was charming, friendly and explained my condition thoroughly with a pictorial chart. I left with detailed instructions (and, because of his explanation, I understood the reasoning) and samples. I've left off one star here because I wished he'd asked me if I had any other questions, which I did. I got my questions answered because I'm proactive and prepared, but I do wish he'd asked me before he started to leave. I've made a follow up appointment.
I was told that I have Glaucoma, but got the secondo opinion at another hospital and there was no Glaucoma. My husband was told the same thing and he didnt have it either. He was very famous that he has been telling to his patients that they have Glaucoma. You should stay away from him.
Apptmt at 1030, arrived 1025. Still waiting 45 mins later. There has been no one in the waiting room but me this entire time. Recommend you go elsewhere. I will be sharing this feedback with the medical group that referred me.
My wife has been waiting one hour and 15 minutes and hasn't seen the doctor yet.
This is an extremely unprofessional office and I would give them zero stars if I could.
I will write more when I hear how the appointment goes but I am sure the doctor will see her for 2 minutes and try to sell her something expensive.
Had a good time at my appointment. All my problems were resolved.
Great doctor. Discover my glaucoma and Im treated there since then.
Attitudes are very cold and they were like machines. Doctor was super busy and tested me for 5min, and disappeared suddenly, and that was the end of examination. The stuff treated elderly people very badly and it was almost no hospitality. I wont go there again.
My visit to Shimmyo's office is the reason why I am so cynical and suspicious of doctors!

I don't have vision insurance and my copays always suck. I wear contacts and my eyes were irritated and red for most of the day and would hurt while looking at a computer screen for not very long. I was new to the city, so I called a few places to ask what a normal office visit would cost. I was told $125, which I could afford.

First, I wait for close to an hour, then I'm shuffled by a nurse from one test to the next, including a regular vision test, colorblind test, glaucoma (these I could understand) and about four more tests that I've never taken before in any other eye doctor's office and which consisted of me staring into various strange machines and doing some sort of task. All of this is without my contacts in, and I have such bad vision (8 contact lense) that it was uncomfortable for me to be led around the office not being able to see.

After all of these tests, which had nothing to do with my problem and took about 40 minutes, I'm finally ushered in to the see the doctor. He comes into the room, cuts me off when I'm trying to explain my problem then suggests that I should get throw away contact lenses because they only cost "80 cents per day. Who wouldn't be willing to pay that?" which A) isn't true, it's much more than that and B) how arrogant! That was the only explanation he gave me then he walked out after seeing me for a mere 5 minutes, while I waited for him and took tests for nearly two hours!

Even better: he writes me a prescription for "really good" eye drops that are just over $100 (WITH my crappy copay) for a teeny tiny 10 mL bottle!

THEN I get a bill for over $800!!! because each tests cost about $100. Luckily my insurance brought it down to just over $300, which is a ridiculous amount to pay for a long wait and crappy service. At least give me the time of day by pretending to listen to my medical problems, doc!
Strong doctor, especially for Japanese & Spanishspeaking patients
Very knowledgeable, pleasant doctor with helpful staff
I have been a patient of Dr. Shimmyo for 21 years now. And I am finding him the best eye doctor up to now.
