Patrick J. Casey's Online Review Report Card

Dr. Casey took one look at me.....female, old, fat, and don't play sports.....and decided I did not need treatment. He took a, "let's let it heal on it's own" approach because he wrongly assessed my activity level by what I look like on the outside. Shame on you, Dr. Casey!! My knee has been so unstable, I have reinjured it day after day after day. I even reinjured, rolling over in bed one night. Thank goodness, a call to my insurance company and they sent me to another doctor who is planning surgery...so I can get my life back. I may be female, old, and fat.....but I carry 114 pound tarps to the top of 13 foot high loads and I ride my bicycle over 100 miles in one day.....I wonder if Dr. Casey would need HIS knee to do that?? I've been trying to work and live my life with a TOTALLY unstable knee which Dr. Casey could have remedied....but couldn't be bothered with me because of his prejudicial view of my needs.

I can't say my experience was bad, but I can't say it was exceptional either. I left, knowing exactly what I already knew going in. Nothing was really done, besides a referral to physical therapy. But then, I went in with my MRI already completed. So, other than tell me what I already knew from the MRI, there really wasn't much to do or tell. I guess I might have benefited from knowing the degree or extent of damage to my ACL and Meniscus, but that was not shared. I see the doctor in a month. I can't really say, given my situation, that my first visit was anything more than average. Skip forward....I was sent to physical therapy, because the doctor wanted to take a, "let's see if it will just heal on its own" attitude. I do have to say that I and my husband felt like we were bothering the doctor, even being there. I am older, heavy, and don't play sports, so felt his assessment of my needs and the treatment plan were being based on those facts. I doubt that the same assessment and treatment plan would have been the same if I was 20, average weighted, and was a runner. But, I went to physical therapy, which was helpful week one and two. After week two, there wasn't much benefit and I did stop and go back to work. Let me explain. I may be old, female, and fat....but I can outwork alot of people half my age, half my weight, and in visibly better physical shape. I'm a truck driver. I move around 30 foot chains, binders, freight, and I can carry a 114 pound tarp up a ladder to the top of a 13 foot high load. I've ridden my bicycle on day trips that were over 100 miles in the same day. I rode my bicycle from Washington DC to Pittsburg, and back (total trip miles 907 miles). I'm old, fat, and look physically out of shape.....but I am ACTIVE. Based on my first visit with this doctor, and it being uneventful towards getting resolution to my injury, I called the nurse to see if the doctor planned to do ANYTHING in regards to my injury. She came back from talking with the doctor and told me he did not plan to do anything. So, I cancelled my second appointment. I then contacted my insurance company, who had my MRI and x-rays reviewed. You see, since my injury, I hurt my knee getting up/down from a chair. I injure my knee going to the toilet and showering. I even injure my knee while sleeping at night and turning over. I can't depend on my knee at work, getting in and out of the truck, or even walking on uneven surfaces. It is so unstable, I just can't depend on it. Every step begs the question if it will twist, dislocate, or completely give out.....but Dr. Casey did not plan to do anything. Thank goodness, the second doctor that reviewed my films, doing so without physically seeing me and making the same WRONG and prejudicial assumptions Dr. Casey made. The second doctor says my knee needs to be stabilized or I risk arthritis or even more severe injury. They plan to surgically stabilize my knee, so I can get back to my ACTIVE life.....even though I am old, fat, and don't play sports. So, I'll let you draw your own conclusions of whether Dr. Casey is the doctor for you......or not.

Dr Casey is concerned enough with my care that he wants me to see another Dr that has a more specialized understanding of my issue. That shows me his pride won’t get in the way of his care for his patients. I think Dr Casey is an all around good dude.

From David Whitenack Dr Casey's manner of interacting with patients could not be better. He took the time to explain the situation, including drawing a picture. He was also transparent and honest about my condition. I was very favorably impressed and strongly recommend him.

Dr Casey did an amazing job on my knee. I tore my ACL completely vertically and my inside meniscus had severe damage to it. 4 weeks after surgery and my bad knee is as flexible as the knee that didn’t have surgery. The after surgery pain lasted less than 36 hours. Great doctor, I would highly recommend him.

As far as the surgery I feel Dr. Casey and his team did as great a job as anyone could realistically hope for considering the damage that had been done. I'm certainly much better then prior to having the surgery although I've lost some strength and quite alot of movement i am grateful for his abilities. My reasons for a 3 star have to do with after the surgery was completed. Always remember no matter what doctor/surgeon etc you see they are paid by your insurance company or workers comp insurance in my case and unfortunately in our system of Healthcare that makes them employees of the insurance companies. My pre-planned long term therapy procedure was cut short just because insurance did not want to pay for it. My Therapists were just as upset as I was due to this and contacted my surgeon's office to fix this obvious mistake "Both my professional Therapist that my Dr recommended" were told to "stay out of it" and that the insurance company and the Dr make the decisions not them. As you can imagine my Therapist were shocked just as I was to hear this coming from the Dr's office "which were the ones who provided my therapist this particular P.T. program for my particular injury" that is supposed to put my health and wellness as there main priority "just as with all there patients". I was sent right back to full on work "manual labor job" without ever starting my strength training program which resulted in the bicep becoming inflamed and swelling up and me missing 4 days of work with no pay. After all was said and done I was deemed permanent impairment after a 60 second exam of my dominant arm to get my IR rating. For reference its supposed to take between 30-60 minutes for this IR exam. No longer am I able to use the larger heavy equipment at work to do part of my job or able to enjoy minor mountain climbing/no more being able to kayak for any long trip around a lake. It is what it is i guess! In conclusion I want to say Dr. Casey as a person and Dr is very likable and a great surgeon and I don't feel any other surgeon could have done a better job. Also the team they have at Concord Orthopedics seem to be great "aside from who my therapists spoke with" from the front desk to every employee who's a part of that team they all are very respectful. Just be prepared to fight harder for yourself after your surgery to get a proper examination to determine your over-all impairment and don't allow yourself to get bullied by the insurance company and miss out on much needed physical therapy. If you can afford a lawyer "which I could not" you may want to consider getting one if you feel things like this are happening to you.

A Great Dr. Would recommend, tells you like it is an is not going to operate if he doesn't have to.
