I simply adore Dr. Shim! My primary care doctor had referred me to see another rheumatologist but I had to wait over 4 months to see her. I decided to see Dr. Shim instead on my own because I was very anxious about my symptoms and I didn't want to wait over 4 months to see a rheumatologist. I am so glad I followed my gut instinct.I developed severe headache recently and my internist was concerned that I may have an autoimmune condition called giant cell arteritis. I did Google search on my own and I couldn't sleep for days after finding out more about this horrible condition. I called his office and I was able to see him on the same day. First, his office staff was very efficient and friendly both over the phone and in person. Then, to my surprise Dr. Shim saw me right on time. At my age, I have seen hundreds of doctors. I honest cannot remember the last time I saw a physician on time without having to wait for at least half an hour.Dr. Shim knocked on the door and he walked in with a huge smile on his face. He greeted me with such warmth and empathy that I felt at ease right away. He has an excellent bedside manner and listened to all my symptoms and concerns attentively without any interruptions. He also asked many thoughtful questions of his own after I was done. Then, he proceeded to examining me after asking for my permission for at least 5 minutes. This was in stark contrast to my primary care doctor and endocrinologist, who finish the entire visit in less than 5 minutes and walk out of the room without even laying a single finger on my body. Dr. Shim looked inside my mouth, listened to my heart and lungs, examined all my joints and felt every pulse in the my body including over my temples. After he completed his examination, he informed me I likely do not have giant cell arteritis. However, to be certain, he ordered pertinent blood tests and even referred me to see an eye doctor urgently on the same day. He promptly called me back the next day with the results and reassured me that I do not have this scary autoimmune condition. I was so ecstatic that I cried out with joy upon hearing those words. He informed me my headache was likely due to my extremely high thyroid hormone level, which he had checked the day prior. Upon readjusting the dose of my thyroid hormone medication, viola, all my symptoms magically melted away in a couple of days. Now, I feel like myself and fantastic again! It is so refreshing to finally meet a doctor in this day and age who actually listens, examines, thinks and genuine cares for his patients. I will be forever indebted and grateful to Dr. Shim for his kindness, generosity, expertise and professionalism. I give Dr. Shim my highest recommendation without any reservation!
Quite condescending and rude. I do not recommend him, laughed at my pronunciation of my hypothyroid medication and really talked down to me.
I was told to see a rheumatologist due to chronic illness. I went to Dr. Shim and he was incredibly thorough. He spent a long time trying to get to the root of my problems and though it ended up not being a rheumatologist's area he gave me info that 10 other doctors couldn't figure out over the past few years about where my problems were likely coming from and he gave me doctors who could help with my problems. It is rare to get that much attention with a doctor and someone willing to think about a person as a whole. He pieced things together by all my symptoms, listening to me about my life and actually physically moving my body around which often doctors don't do anymore. This is an incredibly well educated and caring doctor and not just in his field. I am very grateful for his time.
I saw Dr. Man Shim two days ago and still am feeling like I was finally heard and listened to. He is a true doctor in the sense that he took his time, listened to me, asked me many questions, was very thorough, and explained things to me in layman's terms. He even told me never to trust any doctor because only I know my body better than anyone else. I wanted to cry, but held back my tears. It's hard when you're going through autoimmune issues and you're left feeling over and over again like it's all in your head. He didn't make me feel that way at all. My symptoms fall into the category of "not fully understood" but he didn't dismiss me and I left feeling like I know more about my issues and symptoms that I did going in. I hope to not have to see him again, but if I do I would welcome another visit.
I recently travelled from Las Vegas to Los Angeles for an appointment with Dr Shim and I am so glad we did. Dr Shim has a wonderful friendly and funny nature and his office is run exceptionally well - my appointment was bang on time and the office and medical assistants were welcoming and efficient. After having some health issues for a number of weeks, Dr Shim was the first doctor that actually seemed to care - he listened and answered questions without feeling like you were taking up too much of his time. He was also the first doctor in a long time to actually perform a thorough examination during a consultation! Dr Shim is an absolute asset to his profession and I just wish there were more like him, I won't hesitate to travel over 300 miles to see him as my rheumatologist!
I can sing Dr. Shim's praises all day. I have a chronic condition that required me to check in with him every 3 months. Each appt was as if I was chatting with a VERY VERY smart friend. He always took as much time as I needed to explain and answer questions. He is by far my most favorite doctor I have ever had!!!!
My boyfriend and I both saw Dr. Shim. He is by far the best doctor I have ever seen. He spent a lot of time examining and really listening to what my concerns were. He is friendly, kind, caring and very intelligent. When you see him, you dont just feel like a number. He looks at the whole of your health and will advise you on what other doctor you should see for other existing conditions. He is a great communicator and actually looks at you when he talks and not the computer. I highly recommend him.
Dr Shim is probably a good doctor but expect to be surprised by the bill after your visit!Being newly relocated in US, my wife obtained an appointment in urgency as she was very concerned by suspicious labs results. We went together and paid the cope when visitingSeveral weeks after, we were asked to pay an additional $660! Why? Just because we did not knew that our insurance will not covered it visit because visiting Dr Shim in his private office and not at his UCLA office! How could we know this as the UCLA office told us we were covered and no one warn us at Dr Shim's office??!??Be paranoiaic before dealing with UCLA healthcare and before visiting Dr Shim's office
Dr. Shim spent so much time with me. He tirelessly researched to try and find out what was mysteriously happening to me. I highly recommend him. He has a gentle send caring bedside manner and he will relentlessly advocate for you.
I LOVE Dr Shim, Blanca and all the staff with Dr Horizon. Aside from being a HOTTIE!!! They all have treated me way above and beyond. Been seeing them since Jan. of 2013 seems like I will be seeing them longer. Thank you Dr Shim, Blanca and ALL THE STAFF!!!

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
