I was never able to actually see Dr. Chen. His office staff was unable to send me an invoice for my $15 copay. I’ve never encountered a medical practice unable to do this. Instead, they demanded the payment up-front, even after I explained that I have $22 total for food and gas for my family of three for the next six days. Now, I’ve wasted $4-5 in gas to get to and from an appointment I never actually had. Dr. Chen MAY be great… but you might not be able to see him if you have to live on a budget. It’s so demoralizing when the people that are supposed to be caring for you callously dismiss you over $15. I suppose, from the perspective of a healthcare provider, $15 is the value of the painful and infected cyst I’ve been dealing with for over three years. My family saved for an entire year so we could afford the insurance that I need to go to a doctor and have my cyst removed. Such a slap in the face.

This was my second hernia surgery. The first was for an inguinal hernia repair about 29 years ago when I was in the military. Yesterday’s repair was for an umbilical hernia. Dr Chen was great. He clearly explained the procedure, the potential issues, and asked me about my concerns. I raised a question about general anesthesia since I worried about that more than the surgical procedure. Dr Chen spent time explaining the risk and how it is mitigated. I felt much better after our dialogue. After my surgery I asked Doctor Chen if I could workout. He explained that running, weight lifting, biking, and other strenuous activities are not recommended. However, he did clear me to walk slowly as long as I didn’t feel any pain. I was able to do a 5.2 mile walk yesterday and a 5.1 mile walk today. I feel great and only have minor pain that is easily managed with ibuprofen. I strongly recommend him for any hernia repairs. Top notch.
