Unfortunately, we had a very bad experience with Dr Mathai. She was condescending and dismissive of our questions and concerns. In addition, when she checked the port, she clamped the one located under the dressing which we were told not to touch, causing a problem infusing the IV antibiotics that evening. Both the visiting nurse and the Care Centrix coordinator said this one should never be clamped. This incident would have resulted in an urgent care visit if we hadn't decided to unwrap the dressing. She should have known better or to at least let us know she did this. Unacceptable. The worst part is that after his six weeks of IV therapy, she discharged our son saying his infection had cleared up. We had a consultation the day before at the University of Penn. The infection was NOT cleared up and surgery was required, fortunately requiring minimal removal of toe, saving the foot. We recommend a second opinion if this physician is assigned to you, as it was in our case through a RWJ University Hospitalization.

Dr. Mathai went ABOVE AND BEYOND the call of duty in taking care of my mother who was in hospital. She called me on her personally to ask if I had been contacted by the hospital and made sure she was okay by GOING DOWN TO THR EMERGENCY ROOM and looking in on her. She looked in on her and ordered all necessary medicines for her treatment. She is an EXCELLENT physician who cares for her patients in an expert and efficient manner. Moreover, she LISTENS to her patients’ concerns and explains in a clear, relatable manner. I would surely recommend her to any needing the best in infectious disease treatment. But this was not my first experience with Dr. Mathai. She was MY OWN doctor who supervised my Lyme disease testing and treatment. She did not disappoint.
