MIchael Kalina's Online Review Report Card

Dr. Kalina performed my emergency appendectomy after my appendix ruptured. He did a great job and informed me of the severity of the situation. I was terrified and he didn't reassure me that everything would be ok, but considering how bad my infection was, everything went well. I was in competent hands and healed perfectly. So, if you're like me, and end up in the ER requiring emergency surgery and he's your surgeon, maybe this review will comfort you. He saved my life.

Dr. Kalina is extremely arrogant, unprofessional and is not suited for the profession.

Dr. Kalina has treated many patients on Staten Island and has left the patients and their families in dire need of further assistance. I see he is now practicing in New Jersey. Future patients please beware of his negligence and unprofessional behavior. Unfortunately, I speak from experience.

Im still uncomfortable/ pressure with pain. he was extremely forward and to the point. No compassion at all. I don’t recommend. I’m blessed to have my primary.

Unreliable! I scheduled an appt weeks ahead of time. I go to appt and he is in surgery. Receptionist apologizes and I said no call? She says he may be 20 min or hours. I'm sorry it's either you have appts or your doing surgery. Don't waste peoples valuable time.

If I could give zero stars I would, please check out his background before visiting. Dr. Kalina practiced at Staten Island University Hospital and then left. He was responsible for many mistakes which ultimately left families in dire need of further assistance and attention.

I am very disappointed with my interactions with Michael Kalina. I found him to be very egotistical and would not take the proper time to describe the surgery nor take the proper depth in answering questions I had. He has the attitude of "If it is something I think you should know, I will let you know. Else, no questions." Example: "What does the mesh look like for a hernia repair?" Response: "You can see on YouTube, type in plug and mesh." No other information, doesn't work to show an example nor has any type of pictures to walk through the procedure nor tries to describe anything about it. Basically, he is a black box and when you come out, if he does not deem anything out of the ordinary happened, it is not worthwhile to talk about. I would stay far away from him if you want to learn about what is happening to you.

Dr. Kalina is a great doctor. Handled two emergency surgeries expertly. However, follow up appointments are terrible. Appointments have been delayed an hour or more because Dr. Was doing rounds. Time is important to all.

My personal experience with Dr Kalina was established at the initial consultation. I had multiple issues that required surgery. I had my gallbladder removed first folliwed by 4 months later a ventral hernia repair. They were both successful. Dr. Kalina is very thorough and explains what the procedures involves and how he will approach them. He takes as much time as needed to ensure you as the patient you understand what was discussed and the next steps. Appointments are timely and you can obtain an appointment with out waiting too long. I found he has a great bedside and knowledgeable in his field. The office staff is professional and the nurses who work with him are also very good and patient focused. I highly recommend Dr. Kalina and his staff.
