List of Jay M. Bernstein's Reviews
We have been coming here for almost 2 years. And I so happy that we have found Dr Bernstein. First: Doctor’s assistant is really friendly with my son who gets nervous all the time but she makes him feel much better. 2: Doctor is really good in terms of knowledge and giving the right diagnostic for small children. Other ophthalmologist only want to prescribe glasses to everyone but Dr Bernstein gives the right prescription and the best suggestion when it comes to little kids using glasses. His office needs a little update but I rather have a great ophthalmologist than a fancy place with a bad doctor.
Super fast, rushed visits. You can tell he says/does the same scripted routine with all his patients. With my nearly teenage daughter he was using stuffed animals, and saying the same quick things he probably says to much younger kids. We went for about 4-5 visits and all felt identical in what he said/did/and all were done in haste. We travel an hour for barely an “exam”. The last straw was during a visit during covid. They were trying to social distance, so we were placed in a supply closet to wait. BUT, worse than that - he REUSED a pair of gloves that he probably used on the patient before us. They were inside out. He awkwardly fumbled trying to turn them back to how they were meant to be and used them. I’m a nurse and wasn’t born yesterday. He reused gloves during a pandemic! Gross. Had this visit lasted longer than 5 minutes, I would have had time for the shock to wear off to say something. Needless to say, we have a new eye doctor appointment elsewhere.
My son had an appointment after getting hit in the eye the night before. Let me begin by saying that the Tech who did the vision test with my son and put in his dilating drops was very nice. However, Dr. Bernstein was abrupt and scolded my son because he flinched as Dr. Bernstein was trying to put a dye in his eye. Then when I received their bill they had billed me for a Level 4 New Pt Visit! According to the insurance company, in order to bill a Level 4 visit, the Doctor and/or Tech needed to spend 45 active minutes with my son. The tech took about 5 minutes to have my son read letters on the wall and then put drops in his eyes. Then we waited outside because Dr. Bernstein had not arrived at the office yet. Then Dr. Bernstein spent 5-7 minutes with my son and sent us on our way telling us his eye was fine, but that I should schedule a follow visit. A follow up visit???? They just needed another opportunity to over bill me again. Instead I followed up with my insurance company who is now in the process of disputing Dr. Bernstein's/Advocare's bill.
horrible experience
First - Dr. Bernstein gives excellent care and that is what is most important. Second - I really wish that the practice made some improvements to make life easier for us parents. For starters - there is no handicap access at this building, and there is no ramp. Don't bring your stroller. I asked about this and they said that they had an elevator but it was out of service that day. There is no diaper changing table, but in the bathroom there is a dirty old changing pad that they place on the floor underneath the sink. I had to change my baby on the floor, and good thing I had a portable pad with me. I'm tempted to buy them a new one. Lastly, there is no online patient portal or electronic method for receiving medical records - they can only fax or send via snail mail.
Dr. Bernstein is an excellent Doctor! The 1 Star does not reflect him at all. He has excellent bedside manner and is excellent in handling children! Cross reference what items he does in an exam and what your insurance covers. This is important! He may preform items your insurance does not pay for and you will be left with a bill. I know my kids eyes are important and if given a choice of corse I'd pay out of pocket for an exam if it's important. What I don't like is the surprise you have a 500 dollar bill that you had no idea was coming. I don't like these kind of surprises. And dealing with his office staff was nothing short of a nightmare. They were rude, nasty and not nice at all. So unfortunately we will take our business else where. Even though he is an excellent doctor! Dealing with not so nice office staff is a challenge.
I wish I saw these reviews before seeing Bernstein. His bedside manner is indeed incredibly rude. If you dare ask a clarifying question (and you will need to, because he is not very clear or coherent) he will become very angry at you for questioning him. He is dismissive and impatient. He really is not friendly to children. He saw my child for a few minutes and could not possibly have enough information for a diagnosis. A 2nd opinion to another doctor confirmed this. Do not see this guy.
I do not recommend Dr. Bernstein. He lacks the patience and understanding of how to work with a child who has special needs. Dr. Bernstein gave my child a very negative experience. We are not returning.
I have been bringing my son to Dr Jay Bernstein and Dr. Mayumi Mori now for the past 4 years and both doctors are extremely friendly and caring. They take their time with the patient and also they answer all questions that I had. The office staff is super friendly with the kids and super helpful on the phone when making appts and informing you in regards to any insurance questions you may have. I will continue with this practice and these doctors until my son ages out of their practice.

Selection Criteria
All the information you see here is based on our analysis of internet reviews across the seven major review platforms most used by consumers during their healthcare provider selection. The platforms we selected are Google, WebMD, Yelp, HealthGrades, Facebook, RateMDs, and Vitals. The analysis algorithm uses the compiled data of average score, recency of reviews, number of reviews, and the sentiment expressed in the written comments. It then assigns weight to each parameter based on the available research on how consumers use reviews in their doctor selection process. This report is designed to help identify the doctors with the best overall review score in an area and does not reflect the doctors' competence.
