I was a patient of their practice, seeing Dr. Anna Bartow. She was very nice and a competent physician. However, their practice owner (who was not my physician), Dr. Carly Brown, sent out emails to patients that included both general office info, as well as her opinion about “the state of our country today” and a solicitation for patients to fund a pet project of hers to pay off other people’s medical debt. While this type of request may be considered innocuous, it is still a solicitation. Under the CAN-SPAM Act, businesses are required to offer customers the option to unsubscribe from their email lists. I requested to do so, as is my legal right. Their practice stated that their “system couldn’t do that”, which is a breach of federal law. While I acknowledge that they may have been unaware of this, they refused to remove me and advised that the only resolution they were willing to offer was for me to cease being a patient. This is unacceptable, so I have filed a complaint with the FTC, which governs the sending of marketing emails.
