I went to get my routine eye exam to update my glasses Rx.Having recently moved from out of state I chose him based on location, he was in my insurance network and ability to get an appt. My appointment lasted less than 10 minutes. It was the oddest exam i have ever had and it appeared he was seeing several other patients simultaneously, as we all went to the same 3 rooms to sit at a machine for a few min. At the end the receptionist told me i had a copay and then charged my card. It was not a small amount. I then pulled up my insurance information that said the copay was waved for an eye exam every 24 months. She said there was nothing she could do. The dr was there and became annoyed and quite dismissive. My insurance then contacted them and left messages. Their office then submitted a claim to my insurance for additional $ and put in a code saying the exam was not routine. It was actually less thorough than any routine exam i had ever had. My insurance finally called the Dr. on the phone and i was also on the line. When he heard my name he became very annoyed, raised his voice and said "This was not a routine exam, she is 60 not 20 so how can that be routine, she could have glaucoma or cataracts" (which i do not) then demanded "why would you believe the patient over the dr." and hung up. Clearly this man has both anger issues as well as an over-blown sense of self and is narcissistic. The topper was when i went to have my glasses made the Rx was incorrect. I paid for an appointment that should have cost me nothing, he lied to insurance to get more money, was rude and verbally abusive and now i will have to go to another dr to get a correct exam that will cost me money. Stay far away from this man and his practice.

He didn't know what he was doing.

I really want to like Dr. Wong because he's available on Saturdays, and I adore his front desk staff, but he way overbooks, overpromises what he can do, and then gets mad when you ask him to follow through on those promises. His typical MO is to triple book and see the patients all at once, so you'll be in one room while he's talking about somebody's eye issue in another room (doors wide open, so forget about any privacy), then he leaves them to do something preliminary with you, then you move to another room while he goes and does something with a third person and you wait for the next test. The end result is being there for (at least) an hour moving from room to room with a grand total of ~10 minutes of actually being seen. He's happy to address any concerns you actually bring up, but he sometimes forgets what you're there for along the way of doing this. I've had to remind him of tests as he tried to escort me out. He also is a little weird when you ask questions, like you're questioning his expertise, and gets defensive like "you don't have to do it, plenty of people don't" when I'm just trying to learn what the consequences would be.I don't want to completely discourage you from seeing him because he does seem like he knows what he's doing and is available on Saturdays (only on Saturdays, FYI), but you have to be prepared to spend a lot more time and advocate for exactly what you want with a doctor who seems constantly cranky he's overbooked. My first visit he also lost his patience with a patient who was, admittedly, confusedly demanding the wrong thing, but instead of explaining to her why she was asking for the wrong thing, he said he was "done" and warned the front desk she might need to call the police. Anger issues, maybe?

So personable and knowledgeable. Everyone is kind, courteous, respectful, and caring.

Dr. Wong is a kind and caring human being. In addition, he is a first class ophthalmologist. He has been my ophthalmologist for quite some time. I have no complaints about his practice, whatsoever. The above statements are additional commentary on a review I submitted earlier today.

Dr. Wong has been my ophthalmologist in excess of a decade. He and his staff have, without exception, consistently treated me with courtesy. His staff is efficient and the office atmosphere is pleasant. If you want conveyor belt medical treatment then Samuel Wong, M.D. is the wrong clinician for you. If you want a clinician who listens and prescribes when necessary then he is the clinician you'll favor.

(Note: The office is currently listed as 46 W 86th St on Yelp but I saw him at his 125 W 79th St office.) Suffered a corneal abrasion a few months ago while cycling. During the height of COVID in NYC there were few medical options in the evening outside of ER. Samuel was the only doctor I called who went out of his way to see me after business hours that same day, traveling from home to reopen his office, to check it out (note we both lived relatively close to the office). Prescribed drops that I picked up that evening, and a follow-up appointment to make sure healing was going as planned. Knowledgable, personable and reassuring. P.S. Yes, he followed social distancing, sanitization and mask-wearing protocol to a tee.
